With the increasing independence of both men and women, the economic gains to marriage have diminished dramatically. But if the purpose of love is no longer to ensure our economic well-being, is modern love all consumption? The nature of love might seem like an unlikely topic for an economist, but it is useful to understand how treating love as a commodity is affecting our relationships. In this lecture, Dr. Adshade will argue that this change in perspective is good for relationships because it encourages us to love consciously and to treat love as an informed decision rather than a flight of fancy.

If you have ever wondered about embedding meaningful authentic assessment into your courses, this workshop is for you. Signature assignments are complex student projects used in multiple courses and across time, with instructors partnering together to plan the project description and criteria for success. They allow students to delve deeply into one large assignment that integrates their learning from two or more courses in the same semester, rather than spreading their efforts thinly across numerous disparate assignments.  Bring your course outline and program learning outcomes to explore how you can incorporate signature assignments into your courses.

Academic Services

Academic Services invites you to attend the first of two Winter 2017 Lecture Series events, featuring Dr. Chris Lo from the Psychology program at the University of Guelph-Humber.

Cancer is more than an individual disease. It affects everyone—from families and loved ones to coworkers and institutional supports.  An advanced disease is a special circumstance in which one’s life is threatened, producing a confrontation with mortality that raises many questions about the meaning and value of one’s life.

Please join us on Wednesday, February 15th, 2017 from 11:10am – 1:10pm for Dr. Lo’s lecture: “The Meaning of Life and the Confrontation with Death.” In his presentation, he will also highlight suggestions of how to support individuals and their friends and families who may be dealing with a diagnosis of advanced disease.

Note: This lecture will contain content around the subject of death and dying, which may be disturbing to some audiences.

A light lunch will be served.

Registration is very limited! Please RSVP to academicservices@guelphhumber.ca, and state any dietary restrictions.
