Laila Biali Trio, The Humber 50th Anniversary Band, and the Carandang Pincente Jazz Orchestra

Multi award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter/pianist, CBC National Radio Host, and Humber Music alumna, Laila Biali will be returning to Humber for a star-studded evening of some of Canada’s top jazz musicians.

The celebrated Biali plays the world’s top concert halls, from New York City's Carnegie Hall to Beijing's National Centre for the Performing Arts and has performed with such international icons as Sting. For this performance, Laila’s trio of Larnell Lewis on drums and George Koller on bass, will be joined by some special guests that include Pat LaBarbera, saxophone, Kevin Turcotte, trumpet, Kelsley Grant, trombone, and Andrew Scott, guitar.

The Humber 50th Anniversary Band takes the second half. This stellar ensemble is comprised of Humber Alumni, now some of Canada’s hottest players: Pat LaBarbera, Colleen Allen & Jesse Ryan (saxophone), Kevin Turcotte (trumpet), William Carn (trombone), Thomas Francis (piano), Trevor Giancola (guitar), and Lauren Falls (bass) joined by current student Jackson Haynes (drums). The program takes the listener on a journey through each decade of Humber Music, culminating in a large ensemble for a newly commissioned arrangement for the occasion, bringing back to the stage Laila Biali, Kelsley Grant and Andy Scott.

The Carandang Pincente Jazz Orchestra will kick off the evening. Formed by current Humber students, Dain Carandang and Angela Pincente, in alliance with music colleagues from other schools in Toronto, this electrifying big band is an inspiring demonstration of the spirit of inclusion and collaboration that are core values of Humber.

This exciting event will be hosted by the Bachelor of Music program coordinator, Dr. Andrew Scott, as he weaves the history of the Humber Music through a sensational concert program.

Session overview:

This session will focus on the politically endorsed aggression, demonization, suspicion and oppression of Muslims in a contemporary central-Canadian context.

Join us for a critical conversation that magnifies only a few mechanisms that socialize and normalize the generally accepted perception that Muslim lives, values, and presence are antithetical to Canadian “values.” Most importantly, we will collectively analyze and hypothesize how these values seep into educational contexts among students, instructors, and post-secondary curricula.

Learn more about the session:

Tools that enable cognitive offloading (think, the calculator) have been shaping teaching, learning, and assessment for some time now, but the reality of the power of artificial intelligence tools finally entered the consciousness of educators when ChatGPT became publicly available in late 2022. This reality caused widespread panic at first, but this panic was quickly countered with calls for a systematic and intelligent exploration of how artificial intelligence can be ethically used to enhance education. Join our next Community of Practice with Dr. Bertram Gallant to discuss how we might leverage artificial intelligence to teach ethical decision-making, leveraging the teachable moment to instill academic integrity and a love of learning within our community.

  • When:
    March 30, 2023 10:00am to 11:30am

All are welcome to join us on March 30 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. for an interactive session with members of the Academic Integrity Community of Practice.
