PLEASE NOTE: To be eligible for this award, you must meet 2 requirements:

  1. PI must hold a SSHRC disciplined credential
  2. Project must be aligned under the SSHRC discipline.

SSHRC provides annual block grants that help eligible Canadian postsecondary institutions fund small-scale research activities by their faculty in the social sciences and humanities.  Humber Research uses these SIG funds to award, through a competitive process, individual grants in the amount of $5,000 per annum (number of projects awarded depends on amount of money received from SSHRC) to support research activities.

Have you split your class into groups but are not sure how or even when the groups will collaborate on their research? Are you having trouble monitoring how group members contribute to larger projects? Do you have subject matter that you want students to discuss outside of the classroom? Do your students need a space online to brainstorm together? Wikis can help! Wikis within Blackboard provides students a space for creating and editing interlinked documents. Using the built-in wiki tool in Blackboard, wikis can liven up any course site by encouraging students to be more engaged with course content in an online setting. This tool is ideal for brainstorming, creating outlines, building “living” documents and even event planning.

Ever wonder if the lecture you diligently worked on is being digested by your students? Are you curious to know about your students’ opinions when it comes to a certain topic but attempts at open classroom discussions don’t always reveal such insight? With Clickers, faculty can instantly poll their students and display the results to the class in a matter of seconds. Want to know how many students agree or disagree with a specific controversial issue? Poll your students with Clickers and then discuss the results. Clickers allow faculty to design specific polling questions before hand and integrate these questions into any PowerPoint presentation. Student clicker submissions are anonymous and the results provide faculty with great talking points. Check out this workshop and find out how Clickers can be integrated into your classrooms.

Academic services presents Winter 2012 Lecture Series

New media, such as Facebook, has changed communication in relationships, definitions of friendship, and access to information
about other people (and their access to information about us).
In this lecture, social psychologist and University of Guelph-Humber professor, Amy Muise, PhD, will discuss her research on the social and
relational effects of new media. Specifically, this lecture will address the experience of jealousy in the context of Facebook, and the consequences of information sharing and information seeking (“creeping”) online.

Tweaking and updating one’s Blackboard site occasionally requires faculty to “go behind-the-scenes” and build new content using an HTML editor. However, using the HTML editor does not always produce the desired results.

This workshop is meant for those faculty members who want to learn some of the basics of HTML coding. This introductory workshop will examine how HTML coding can help you organize your course structure and participants will learn about writing reusable and easy to customize content as well as useful tools that can enhance your
Blackboard course site. A gentle introduction to HTML 5 will also be presented.
