Description:
In the delicate strokes of charcoal and pencil, "Mother Fortune" unfolds a narrative of boundless love, tender care, and profound emotion. At the heart of the artwork stands Mother, a figure of strength and warmth, cradling her precious toddler in her arms. Each line etched on the paper speaks volumes of the unbreakable bond between parent and child, resonating with the universal language of maternal affection.

As you gaze upon the scene, you're drawn into a world where time stands still, and only the purity of love reigns supreme. Mother's gentle embrace encapsulates a universe of protection and reassurance, while the child nestles close, finding solace and security in her nurturing arms. Every detail, meticulously crafted, portrays the essence of tenderness and devotion.

The interplay of light and shadow adds depth to the emotional narrative, casting a soft glow upon Mother's serene countenance as she gazes adoringly at her child. The innocence of youth is captured in the toddler's cherubic features, their eyes alight with wonder and trust. It's a moment frozen in time, where every stroke of the artist's hand whispers a tale of maternal love's infinite power.

"Mother Fortune" transcends mere artistry; it's a poignant reflection of the universal bond that unites mothers and children across cultures and generations. It speaks to the profound truth that amidst life's uncertainties, the love between a mother and her child remains an unwavering beacon of hope, guiding us through the darkest of nights and celebrating the brightest of days.

Through my photography I've gotten in the habit of spending more time outdoors, which has been incredibly beneficial to my mental health. Spending so much time around nature keeps me grounded and allows me to relax. I love photographing wildlife because it gives me the opportunity to get up close and really immerse myself in the environment. I haven’t found it easy to form relationships or communicate with the people who know me. Photography has helped me to do that. Making art is a very personal experience for me and I aim to represent that in my work. I like to think that when I take a photograph, the resulting photo is just as much a representation of myself as it is of the subject. Specifically in this image I wanted to portray how much of ourselves we put into our art. Every single person is unique, and every single piece of art was created because the artist cared about something. That means that every piece of art ever created is equally as unique. I don’t think it’s just the work that makes something meaningful, I think it’s the artist as well. 2023 Katelyn Vanderwal N01614101 Photography North Faculty/Staff 21-02-2024

The choice of a scarf as a focal point symbolizes not only warmth and comfort but also a sense of protection and security that surrounds the innocence of youth.

In depicting this young subject, I aimed to capture the essence of serenity and simplicity that often characterizes childhood. The innocence and purity of the child's expression convey a sense of untainted wonder and curiosity about the world around her.

Through this portrait, I sought to evoke a feeling of nostalgia and appreciation for the fleeting moments of innocence that define childhood. In a world often fraught with complexities and challenges, I wanted to create a visual reminder of the beauty and serenity found in the unassuming nature of youth.

Ultimately, "Scarf of Serenity: Portrait of Innocence" serves as a celebration of the purity and tranquility that can be found in the simple joys of childhood, inviting viewers to reconnect with their own sense of wonder and innocence.

Through the image of an old man lying in a drunken slumber, dreaming of his departed wife, I aimed to evoke a sense of profound longing and nostalgia.

I wanted to capture the raw vulnerability of the human experience, highlighting how grief and the ache of loss can linger long after the physical presence of a loved one has faded away. By portraying the man's vulnerability and emotional depth, I hoped to create a piece of art that resonates with viewers on a deeply personal level, inviting them to reflect on their own experiences of love, loss, and the enduring power of memory.

Through this painting, I sought to explore the ways in which we navigate the pain of loss, finding solace in the memories and dreams that keep the spirit of our loved ones alive within us. Ultimately, my intention was to create a work of art that speaks to the universal aspects of the human condition, reminding us of the profound connections that bind us together in our shared journey through life.

Every two years we
would do a big trip abroad and explore the culture and nature. But for about
7 years we were never able to travel all together. That's until last year,
when we were all available at the same time and we traveled to Madeira.

As a filmmaker, I love capturing my travels (with my Canon 90D). Hence, when
we arrived to the landscapes of Madeira I was amazed by the beauty of nature
and had to capture it for safekeeping.

I named this photo Alone because you can't look at it and not think of the isolation in the frame. The one house and one car surrounded by a wall of water. Yet, you don't know if the photo is sad or happy. The isolation looks so peacful in the beautiful nature around the house but isolation can also be lonely. The photo is up for interpretation.

If you connect between the two photos I submitted, I see a connection between the two. The drive and the destination. Or the red car that is searching for its matching red house.

Hope you like it!
