Among Humber’s newer programs is the Hearing Instrument Specialist Diploma program within the Faculty of Health Science & Wellness, which provides superior learning experiences in cutting-edge lab facilities and in community-focused work such as a free on-campus hearing clinic.

The program opened in fall 2022 and will be celebrating its first graduating class in spring 2024. To add to the excitement, HearCANADA has donated their inaugural gift in support of the program.

HearCANADA strives to unlock human potential by providing premier hearing healthcare at over 80 locations across the country. Their multi-year gift includes a donation to the Annual Hearing Instrument Specialist Fund for Excellence, along with the HearCANADA Bright Futures Scholarship.

“Through the Humber College Hearing Instrument Specialist program, we aim to give students the support they need to excel in their studies and hone their skills,” says Raksha Kholia, Audiology and Training, HearCANADA. “It’s truly an honour for us to play a part in shaping the future of our industry by investing in these talented individuals.”

Rachel Riaboy, Professor and Program Coordinator, Hearing Instrument Specialist Integrative and Allied Health, notes how challenging it can be for students to juggle jobs, studies, and community involvement.

“The scholarship provides motivation for students who are balancing everything and still able to excel academically,” she says. “Having their efforts recognized provides empowerment to keep moving forward. It can also allow them the capacity to work less hours and have more open lab practice—a key component of the two-year program that prepares students to improve quality of life for those living with hearing loss.

The scholarship will be presented to a second-year student who excels academically in their first year of the Hearing Instrument Specialist Diploma program. The application includes an essay question on how the student has demonstrated leadership qualities through participation in the classroom, extra-curricular activities, volunteer work, or community involvement.

“Receiving a bit more financial security often translates into paying it forward,” says Riaboy. “For example, the student may give back within Humber’s institution by doing peer tutoring. It’s a win-win for everyone.”
