Jacqueline Morgan conceived and led the Humber Student Food Security Fund, utilizing the Friendlier app to provide a $5 daily food subsidy to students in need. Her initiative addresses food insecurity and fosters community support, aligning with Humber's sustainability goals and significantly impacting students' well-being.
Food insecurity is a significant issue at Humber Polytechnic, with 36.8% of students reporting they struggle with food access according to the 2019 NCHA data (American College Health Association, 2019). This issue is linked to poorer academic performance, as inadequate nutrition can severely impact students' ability to focus and succeed in their studies (American College Health Association, 2019). Additionally, 84.4% of students expressed a need for more affordable food options, highlighting the financial barriers many face (IGNITE, 2018).
Jacqueline Morgan recognized these pressing challenges and took decisive action by creating the Humber Student Food Security Fund. She conceived the idea and led the initiative from ideation through stakeholder consultation, planning, and implementation. This innovative initiative utulizes the Friendlier app, already used for the reusable container program, to allow users to donate their container deposits to the Fund. This provides a sustainable and convenient way to support students experiencing food insecurity.
Her approach of integrating social welfare with environmental initiatives is both innovative and impactful. The fund leverages existing infrastructure for a new purpose, enhancing community support mechanisms while promoting sustainability. Her initiative stands out as a model of creative problem-solving and commitment to Humber's sustainability goals.
Jacqueline Morgan's leadership and dedication to enhancing sustainability through the Humber Student Food Security Fund not only addresses immediate student needs but also fosters a culture of sustainability and community support at Humber.
