Mihai Albu, BSc, PhD., Computer Science

Mihai is a professor in Humber Polytechnic's Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology....
Mihai has 22 years of research experience in academic and industrial settings. Since joining Humber in 2019, he has led research projects with three partners including Bombardier. His past research was focused on large-scale biological data analysis. As a principal investigator on projects at Centennial and Mohawk Colleges, his areas of expertise included computer science algorithms, machine learning and artificial intelligence, virtual reality and automatic pattern recognition.

M. Tanvir Alam, PhD. (IT), MSc. (CS), M.Eng. (EE), DS, ELITE, ToA, member (IEEE)

M. Tanvir Alam is a professor in Humber Polytechnic's Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology. Tanvir received several awards during his academic tenure including IPRS and ATSE....
He worked as an R&D scientist at Boeing and held several positions in the IT industry in the past 20 years. He served as a sessional lecturer for McMaster University, Bond University, Central Queensland University and several career colleges. His research interests include cloud computing, software-defined networks, biometric security, blockchain technologies, combinatorial optimization, predictive analytics, web and distributed systems. He supervised many applied research projects funded by NSERC ARD, Engage, and OCE CVTA grants. He was the technical lead and industry relations coordinator of the successful 900K NSERC IE grant application for WIMTACH, Centennial. Tanvir authored a book on 3GPP IP Multimedia Subsystem and published his work in several peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings.

Akram Afifi, PhD., P.Eng., PMP, Geomatics/Civil Engineering

Akram is a professor in Humber Polytechnic's Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology. Akram initiated the Humber unmanned and autonomous systems lab to support applied research and innovation initiatives in collaboration with industry and academic alliances....
As a result, a few projects and relationships have been established with worldwide industry partners to develop aerial and ground autonomous systems. Dr. Afifi obtained his PhD. degree in Geomatics Engineering from the department of Civil Engineering, Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). He also holds an adjunct professor position in the department of Civil Engineering at the same institution. Akram received numerous awards in recognition of his academic and leadership achievements, including a Dennis Mock award from Toronto Metropolitan University, as well as "Best Paper" and "Best Poster" awards at various conferences and professional events. He was also honoured by several academic and professional institutions worldwide.

Maryam Davoudpour, PhD., M.Sc., B.Sc

Maryam, a professor in Humber Polytechnic's Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology, received her M.Sc. and PhD. degrees from the Bauman Moscow State Technical University in Information Technology and Control Complex Systems....
Davoudpour has extensive industrial and academic experience and has been involved in various successful R&D projects in the areas of nonlinear modelling, knowledge-based expert systems, Petri nets, modelling context-aware systems and Internet of Things. She is the chair of the IEEE Instrumentation, Measurement, Robotics and Automation chapter in Toronto and the chair of Women in Engineering (WIE) at IEEE Toronto, as well as the vice-chair of WIE IEEE Canada and also a WIE representative for Central Canada. Maryam was selected as an Honorable Mention of the 2018 WIE Inspiring Member of the Year Award by the IEEE Women in Engineering Committee (WIEC) for her inspirational leadership and outstanding contributions to the IEEE WIE and IEEE communities.

Georges Livanos, B.Eng., M.E.Sc., Electrical and Computer Engineering

Georges is a professor in Humber Polytechnic's Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology. Prior to studying engineering, Georges was a technologist with a diploma in Electronics Engineering Technology from Humber Polytechnic....
Georges accumulated a total of 15 years of industry experience mainly in the health-care sector, first as a technologist and later as a biomedical engineer, before going into teaching in 2001. Georges typically teaches courses in two streams, including digital signal processing, image processing, video, and Fourier analysis, as well as physics-based courses, such as fibre optics, electromagnetics and microwaves. In 2014 he received an NSERC grant for research in HVAC controls. In September 2015 Georges received the Humber Research Excellence Award. He is co-inventor, with two others, of one US and Canadian patent.

Orren Johnson, B.Sc. (Hons)

Orren is a graduate of the University of East London, UK. He has over 30 years of experience in the software industry as a developer and entrepreneur and is currently a partial-load professor in Humber Polytechnic's Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology....
Orren ran two successful software practice organizations, the first of which started in 1999 and was one of the first to achieve a gold partnership status with Microsoft Canada. The second organization, which started in 2008, achieved the Microsoft Canada Partner of the Year award in 2010 for virtualization. Orren’s expertise ranges from data analytics to software engineering and all aspects of the software development life cycle. Orren is currently involved in a research project using machine learning and analytics to provide improved aircraft maintenance scheduling.

Daryoush Mortazavi, P.Eng., M.Sc., PhD., Electrical Engineering

Daryoush is a professor in Humber Polytechnic's Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology. He has focused his research on the areas of biomedical image processing in MS diagnosis and LSPR biosensors....
Additional interest in research includes Industry 4.0, IoT, IIoT and AI. He is a licensed professional engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario. Daryoush’s industry experience includes automation and control systems. He has taught numerous practical courses in several institutions, including Humber Polytechnic. Daryoush has been awarded several NSERC Engage grants to design and implement IoT systems in various applications of smart homes, smart buildings, smart cities, indoor navigation and related areas. He has worked on a range of different technologies in Industry 4.0 projects, including Wi-Fi, BLE, LoRa, Zigbee, ZWave, and serial protocols of UART, SPI, and I2C. Also, he has worked on various AI and ML algorithms like GAN, RNN, SVM, KNN, and so on.

Adam Thomas, MA, Teaching and Technology

Adam is a professor in Humber Polytechnic's Faculty of Media & Creative Arts. Adam has been teaching code at Humber Polytechnic for almost 20 years. His teaching topics include HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Node.js, React, Firebase, PHP, Laravel, Python, cloud computing, and application development....
Adam has completed applied research in the area of teaching code in post-secondary institutions, including research collaboration with Otago Polytechnic and Otago University in New Zealand, Juno College in Toronto, VIA University in Denmark, and Fontys University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. Adam has developed classroom innovation to assist in the teaching of code in post-secondary institutions, including learning code using robotics and a Visual Studio Code plugin to live stream code in a plain text format. He has authored several coding textbooks with Friends of Ed Publishing and published several peer-reviewed journal articles. Adam also consults for a Biopharma software start-up developing software to improve the RFP procurement procedure and get medicines to market faster.

Mike Wise, BA, MA

Mike is the program coordinator of Humber's graduate certificate in Journalism, part of the Faculty of Media and Creative Arts. He comes to Humber Polytechnic after a 32-year career with CBC Toronto as an award-winning reporter and TV anchor....
While at Canada's public broadcaster, he covered everything from provincial politics to technology to local arts for TV, radio and online platforms. Most recently, he hosted CBC's 11:00 local newscast for almost a decade. Mike started working at CBC when he was just 17 and still in high school. One of his first responsibilities was to work on the 1988 federal election broadcast, even though he wasn't legally old enough to vote. Mike holds an honours degree in Political Studies from Queen’s University and a master’s degree in Communication and Technology from the University of Alberta.
