Announcements

I’m pleased to announce departmental changes within Humber International as we conclude our work on the current internationalization strategy and look ahead to the creation of Humber’s third internationalization strategy in 2023. We have re-organized the department around three key operational areas: international enrollment, global education and international development.

International enrollment will continue to play a role in Humber’s ongoing success. To focus our efforts, align our resources and secure maximum return for our outreach while maintaining a globally diverse international enrollment base, I will be hiring a Director of International Enrollment in the next month. Both the international recruitment and admissions functions will report into this position and will provide opportunities to better align all enrollment functions under one lead position. The Director position will work closely to support overall college enrollment goals, and with the enrollment team in the Registrar’s Office.

The current Associate Director, Admissions and Student Services, position will be repurposed into the International Enrollment Director position. The International Student Advisor team will now report into the second key operational area, Global Education and Partnerships. This area will be led by Rebecca Fitzgerald, in her new role as Associate Dean, Global Education and Partnerships. Rebecca’s portfolio will combine comprehensive international student services with global education initiatives such as collaborative online international learning, student and faculty exchange, global academic partnerships and other projects such as the Global Summer School and Global Systems Gap Challenge.

Our international development portfolio has expanded significantly under the direction of Nalini Andrade. We are currently overseeing $12 million in development projects in Africa, Asia, South America and the Caribbean. Nalini has been named the Director of the International Development Institute. She will continue to develop and secure capacity development projects around the world, growing both the project portfolio and Humber’s ability to affect meaningful, lasting global change.

There are three other changes in the department that will support our realignment. Joshua Favaro is now the Associate Director, International Operations, and oversees all finance, agent relations, human resources, technology and customer service functions. Mathusa Maheson is now the Manager responsible for the Customer Service team within the department.

Vedika Taunk, who was the Manager of International Marketing, is now the Associate Director, Digital Analytics and Strategy. For part of her new role, she will continue to report through Humber International and oversee the department’s marketing and communications. The other part of her position is to lead college-wide digital analytics development, co-reporting to Andrew Leopold in Government Relations, Marketing and Communications.

In this role, Vedika will lead digital analytics measurement and how data and analytics are assessed and deployed to maximize the ROI of all marketing and communications efforts across the college. Some of her primary responsibilities include developing a digital analytics framework, designing a system to collect and integrate data and analytics, and providing counsel to assess and identify opportunities to deploy digital analytics to initiatives and decision making.

Please join me in congratulating our colleagues as they advance Humber’s internationalization commitments around the world.

Humber has identified as its Strategic Priority #7 under Pillar #3, Healthy and Inclusive Community, to continue to build a diverse and inclusive community of exceptional students, faculty, and staff. The specific supporting action is to establish and implement an institutional framework and strategy for equity, diversity and inclusion that addresses the needs of both students and employees.

Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) bring together employees who share a common identity, characteristic and set of interests. They create a culture of inclusion that enhances employee engagement and further supports organizations’ vision and values.

The Black/African ERG was launched in September 2020 and is one of two ERGs that Humber College currently offers for all eligible staff and faculty. (Source: Catalyst)

Humber employees who identify as Black/African and are interested in joining the ERG are invited to send an email to the Co-Leads, Shernett Bennett at shernett.bennett@humber.ca or Lola Nelson lola.nelson@humber.ca.

The Humber Learning Outcomes (HLOs) were officially launched in March 2020, just days before the College closed most of its campus activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, we have been busy navigating the impacts of the pandemic and working with departments across the College to implement the HLOs in ways that will ensure our learners are able to articulate and demonstrate their HLO achievements.

Why is this important? The HLOs are part of Humber’s 2018-23 Strategic Plan under the Career-Ready Citizens strategic pillar. They support Strategic Priority #1: Integrate core, 21st century global citizenship and employability skills into all program curricula. The HLOs represent institutional learning outcomes - fundamental skills and mindsets that transcend individual programs and disciplines and are globally recognized as essential to graduates’ success in work and life, enabling them to contribute to their communities locally and globally, as professionals and citizens. The HLOs were identified through extensive research and in collaboration with Humber students, faculty, staff, and industry and community partners.

Since the HLO launch, we have continued to evolve our team and would like to share some announcements and updates with the Humber community.

HLO Team:

Vera Beletzan, Associate Vice-President, Teaching and Learning - continues to serve as the HLO strategic initiative lead, while Lisa Salem-Wiseman and Sarah Nieman are leading the implementation of the HLOs across the Humber community.

Lisa Salem-Wiseman, Associate Dean and Special Advisor, Humber Learning Outcomes - Joining the HLO project in January 2022, Lisa has been meeting with Academic Division leaders to pilot an updated HLO implementation process with programs across all six Faculties. She will be actively involved in the ongoing strategic leadership of the HLOs.

Sarah Nieman, Project Manager, Humber Learning Outcomes - For more than four years, Sarah has been instrumental in all components of the research, development and launch of the HLO framework. She is currently focused on finalizing faculty toolkit resources and planning the next implementation phase for the HLOs. Along with Lisa, she also works closely with other strategic plan leads to maximize the impact of the HLOs with areas such as Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, Internationalization, Sustainability, and more.

Here are some key achievements and upcoming plans from the HLO team:

  • Faculty from more than 30 programs across all academic Faculties have engaged with the HLOs, supporting the development of an intuitive implementation process that will be piloted in upcoming semesters.

  • The HLOs are an essential part of the International Graduate School’s Community and Industry Engagement course; more than 600 students have drawn connections and reflected on their skill and mindset development through this programming.

  • The six courses in the 2022 Global Summer School piloted the HLOs in their curriculum; more than 200 Humber and non-Humber students from around the world were encouraged to think differently about the skills that they learned.

  • The HLO team is developing faculty toolkits for the HLO mindsets that will support faculty teaching practices. These toolkits will be available on the Innovative Learning website in Fall 2022 and will provide all faculty members with an opportunity to learn more about the HLOs as well as contribute to and improve these essential resources.

  • Starting in Fall 2022 and continuing through the academic year, the HLO team will communicate with all faculty members regarding the next implementation phase of the HLOs. By 2024, it is anticipated that all courses across Humber’s programs will incorporate the HLOs into their curriculum.

  • The HLOs website will provide information on the project’s upcoming plans and achievements.

Faculty members who are interested in deeper work with the HLOs are encouraged to speak with their Associate Dean.

Lisa and Sarah continue to provide presentations and workshops to showcase the importance of the HLOs for Humber, and for Humber students and alumni as they enter the workforce. We will also be offering sessions for individuals to learn more about the HLOs through the CIL. For more information, please contact Sarah Nieman at sarah.nieman@humber.ca

To all Humber faculty, staff, and students who have participated in HLO development to date, thank you! This is truly a collaborative project, and the work is shaped by us all.

Sincerely,

Vera Beletzan

Social Escape via Humber Guardian App

The Department of Public Safety is pleased to share that we have launched a new feature, known as the "Social Escape" on the Humber Guardian App. The Social Escape feature allows users to get out of a difficult/potentially dangerous social situation by calling them and giving them an excuse to leave. Here's how it works:

  • Users will open the Humber Guardian app and choose the Social Escape button.
  • Users will enter their information (phone number) and indicate when they want the system to call them (e.g. 30 seconds).
  • The app will then call them from 888-519-4933 within the specified amount of time. Users can save this number in the phone as their desired name to be shown on the screen, when called.
  • Users will then tell the people in their social situation that they need to answer the call and exit the social situation. Users should continue walking until they are safe. The system will play the audio message multiple times to give users enough time to leave.

View a quick video on the feature

If you would like more information please reach out to Public Safety at publicsafety@humber.ca.
