Humber’s quarterly research and innovation magazine SPARK Issue #6 is here!

SPARK Issue #6 shines the spotlight on three research and innovation projects from Humber faculty members, researchers, and students. From horticulture professor Lynn Short's research on controlling invasive species to nurse bot developed by Humber FAST students at an international hackathon to FMCA’s first Augmented Reality experience featuring Howie the Hawk, Humber’s research and innovation community is continuously pushing boundaries through creativity and collaboration.

The new SPARK issue invites you to learn about the experiences of Humber Press team members who attended ESOMAR Congress 2022, a leading international conference for market research, and Global Conference on Sustainability in Higher Education (GCSHE). The issue includes Q&A with authors of two research studies published in the 2022 special issue of the Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Education (JIPE).

SPARK Issue #6 features a foreword from Ginger Grant, PhD., dean of Research and Innovation, and New Year’s greetings from Dianna Dinevski, PhD. (abd), associate dean of Research and Development. If you’re interested in making a New Year’s resolution that sticks, look no further than the welcoming editor’s note from Anju Kakkar, managing editor, Humber Press, ORI, who shares valuable insights on making effective New Year’s resolutions.

No matter where your curiosity lies, SPARK is here to inspire you in your research and innovation journey.

The following four (4) micro-credentials have been developed specifically for Humber faculty by the Innovative Learning team. All micro-credentials are delivered in an asynchronous online format. Each micro-credential consists of four modules, or 12 hours of curriculum delivery. Micro-credential participants who achieve 50% or more in all assessments will receive a badge.

There is no fee or cost associated to register for the micro-credential. Please note that space is limited. Offered internally to active Humber employees only.

Assessments for Learning
Focuses on assessments and evaluations in the teaching and learning cycle. Faculty will consider ways to design and deliver assessments so that they are part of the learning process instead of a product of learning.

Curriculum Design & Development
Familiarizes faculty with the curriculum development process. Faculty will review ways to plan and create a well-designed and thoughtfully sequenced curriculum for a course or program.

Facilitating Learning
Engages faculty to think about the strategies to create impactful and intentional learning experiences. Throughout the MC, faculty will consider how the facilitation of content – whether in a classroom or other setting – can support learning and professional development.

Teaching and Learning in HyFlex Environments
Introduces faculty to the methods, practices, and tools for adapting an existing in-person lesson plan for HyFlex teaching. Faculty will review strategies and methods to create a learning experience that engages learners in all three modalities and ensures an equivalent experience for all students.

To enroll for the Winter 2023 semester, complete the registration form.

Participants will receive a confirmation email from the IL team once registration has been processed.

Self-service password reset (SSPR) is a tool that will significantly improve your experience when it comes time to reset or recover your Microsoft Outlook password.

SSPR enables you to safely manage your own password reset without the need of logging a ticket with the Tech Zone or the IT Support Centre — giving you more control to easily and quickly reset your password anywhere and anytime.

How to use SSPR

Reminder: You have to register for SSPR before you can use the reset tool. After you have completed registration, each time you want to reset your password, you will be asked to confirm your identity by providing your authentication information.

You can confirm your identity by providing proof you are who through a second authentication factor after you have input your password, such as a separate email, text message, phone call or a push notification from the Microsoft Authenticator App. You can change your recovery information at any time.

How to recover your password:

  1. On the Microsoft Outlook login page click ‘forgot password’
  2. Provide your email and complete the CAPTCHA
  3. Provide two alternative methods of verification (phone, email, Authenticator App)
  4. Enter and confirm your new password

Dear faculty and admin staff,

The Healthy Breaks@Humber offered through the Centre for Innovation in Health and Wellness (CIHW) is another exciting initiative towards supporting a healthy campus culture. We are offering either a short ‘mindfulness’ or ‘movement’ in one – or more - of your upcoming faculty/leadership meetings or classes.

Taking a healthy break for a few minutes can increase productivity, lessen body aches and pains, improve creativity, and increase engagement. Healthy breaks can help improve mental health, lower anxiety, and help refocus the mind.

If you have a meeting or a class that is 1.5 hours or more during the winter semester, we encourage you to schedule a healthy break to energize the body and the mind for your students or colleagues.

If you have any questions or need more information, please feel free to email us at cihw@humber.ca.

With sincere thanks,

Dr. Vanita Varma
Director CIHW

To all faculty and academic partners,

Please note that if learners are coming to the Test Centre to complete an exam that they missed in Fall 2022, they will no longer have access to their Fall courses in Blackboard, since all learners lose this access once the semester ends.

For the Test Centre this means that:

  1. Learners will not be able to book an appointment via Blackboard since this course is no longer available; they must instead email, call, or visit the Test Centre to make an appointment;
  2. If the test was supposed to be administered on Blackboard, learners will no longer be able to access this test; we advise faculty to upload a Word or PDF version of the Blackboard exam with their test submission, so that we can administer the exam in the Test Centre.

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email us at testingservices@humber.ca.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of all learners.
