Medical Response Plans (MRP) exist to ensure faculty receive the information they need in the event that a learner experiences a medical incident during class such as a seizure or a life-threatening allergic reaction. MRPs are developed by Accessibility Consultants in Accessible Learning Services (ALS) if a student discloses medical information that necessitates a plan.

  • A MRP is developed and will outline steps to be taken by faculty and Public Safety when appropriate if a medical incident occurs.

  • Faculty are never required to perform any medical intervention. There is an expectation that they will alert the proper resources (e.g., emergency services, Humber Public Safety) to attend to the learner as appropriate.

  • MRPs are sent directly to faculty, Public Safety and the appropriate Associate Dean via email by ALS staff. In most cases, the MRP will be issued at the start of the semester but depending on when a learner connects with ALS, it may be issued during the semester.

  • Should you receive an MRP, be sure to review it carefully and note the contact information for Public Safety.

Visit our ALS Information for Faculty website to learn more about accommodating students with disabilities.

Please email us at accessible-learning@humber.ca with suggestions for key accessibility-related topics that you would like us to address through the Communiqué.

At Humber, we value the health and well-being of our staff and students and want to support YOU every step of the way.

To support this commitment, Humber has launched humber.ca/healthyYOU, an online healthy community hub that is a central site for well-being resources for students and employees.

The Hub also includes Humber’s Well-being Strategy, which focuses on four pillars: mental, physical, financial, and social health and well-being. We provide support to the overall health and well-being of our employees through a variety of resources and initiatives.

Humber's Social Health and Well-being Commitment

To support our employees’ social health and well-being, the following resources are available:

  • Career Milestones Recognition
The Career Milestone program recognizes faculty and staff on completing full-time years of service. We celebrate their achievements throughout their employee journey from their first year, and in five year increments up to forty years of service.

  • Employee Resource Groups
Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are voluntary, employee-led groups that foster a diverse and inclusive workplace aligned with organizational mission, values, goals, business practices, and objectives. Humber’s Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) include an 2SLGBTQ+ ERG and a Black/African ERG.

  • President’s Awards and Breakfast
The President's Awards have been a proud tradition of recognizing excellence among Humber faculty and staff. Each year, the President's Awards are bestowed on employees who achieve excellence in various fields and criteria, at the Annual President's Breakfast and Recognition Ceremony.

  • Professional Learning Resources
Humber is committed to investing in professional learning for all employees, to build their capability and enable them to contribute to achieving the College’s strategic goals. Employees have access to learning opportunities in a variety of forms and styles to suit each learner.

  • Remote Working Resources
Humber’s Remote Working Policy is grounded in the philosophy that employees will work productively to achieve institutional goals and objectives when supported by a culture of performance and care.

  • Retiree Recognition
At Humber, we recognize and value the dedication, hard work and contribution of our employees. Each year, a Retirees’ Dinner is held to celebrate the employees who have retired at Humber in the past year.

  • The Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion
The Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion (the Centre) provides human rights and equity programs and services to the Humber Community. The Centre ensures that equity, diversity and inclusion are instilled throughout Humber.

  • The Unlearning Circle
This group’s mission is to foster the development of knowledge and skills among white Humber employees to continually identify, disrupt and address systemic racism and colonized ways of being, knowing, and doing.

The Ontario Human Rights Commission requires that all employers provide ongoing education and training on the organization’s human rights policy. All Humber employees (full-time, non-full-time, work-study) are required to update their knowledge of Humber’s Human Rights Policy and Complaint Resolution Procedures every two years.

This online, asynchronous workshop on Blackboard will provide an introduction to Ontario Human Rights Code, discrimination, harassment, and Humber’s Human Rights and Harassment Policy. Learners will gain an understanding of their rights and responsibilities and how all these concepts intersect and interact in the learning and working environment.

If you require access to this training, please contact humanrights@humber.ca.

The beginning of September is always an exciting time at Humber. Many of us look forward to the return of campus life and the energy that our new and returning staff and students bring with them. While this makes Humber a great place to work and learn, the increased pedestrian and vehicular traffic around campus cannot be ignored. Whether you drive, bike, walk, or take transit to campus, you will be impacted by this increased activity, and it is important to stay safe and vigilant when moving around campus grounds.

If you drive on campus, keep these safety tips in mind:

  • Follow all posted traffic signs. This includes speed limit signs and stop signs.
  • Watch for pedestrians: consistently scan across the road for pedestrians, cyclists, other motorists, and other hazards.
  • Give pedestrians adequate time to cross the road.
  • Look in all directions before making a turn and signal your turn.
  • Avoid distractions: do not use your cell phone while driving.
  • Pay extra attention when reversing your vehicle.

As a pedestrian walking along roads and in parking lots, always practice the following:

  • Walk on sidewalks and designated walking paths.
  • Use designated crosswalks and look both ways before crossing. Make eye contact with any drivers in the area before stepping onto the road.
  • Be mindful of curbs and other tripping hazards.
  • Minimize distractions: avoid using your cell phone when walking.

Resources to Support Student Well-being

Post-secondary studies and various environmental, systemic and structural factors can have adverse effects on learner's mental health and well-being. Generally, there are signs that a learner is struggling long before a situation escalates into a crisis.

Faculty and staff are well-positioned to recognize behaviour that may indicate that a learner is in distress and may require support. Being able to recognize the signs of distress and make appropriate referrals are critical first steps in supporting learner well-being.

The Responding to Students in Distress website and the Student Wellness and Equitable Learning Handout have resources for faculty and staff to learn more about steps they can take to support learners, as well as information about the “Recognize, Respond and Support a Learner in Distress” Workshop that is available to the Humber Community. Faculty and staff who interact with students are encouraged to take this workshop.

For more information about employee learning resources, please visit the Professional Learning section of the HROE website. If you have any questions, please contact the HR Support Centre
