As we reflect on the achievements and milestones of the past academic year, we are excited to share some remarkable success stories from Humber's Advising & Career Services. We want to shine a spotlight on the incredible contributions of our Career Support Peers, who have played a pivotal role in making this year a resounding success.

What is a Career Support Peer (CSP)?

  • Student leaders who offer one-on-one appointments and engaging workshops, sharing their insights and expertise to help their peers with resume and cover letter building, interview preparation, and optimizing their LinkedIn profile.

Over the 2022/2023 Academic Year the Career Support Peers:

  • Provided in-person and virtual 1-1 appointments to over 1,100 current students
  • Hosted 50 Career Step Workshops to over 400 current students

To further enhance our community's understanding of our services, we have attached an essential resource.

Career Support Guide for Students: Faculty can share this guide with their students, allowing them to access our wide range of services and resources.

We invite you to explore this guide and discover the various ways Advising & Career Services can benefit both students and faculty. Over the next few weeks, we will be highlighting our key services and resources with the Humber Community, so stay tuned for more updates!

We look forward to continuing this journey of empowerment, education, and success in the semesters to come.

I am pleased to announce that Azieb Musa-Habtu, currently Site Supervisor at our North Etobicoke Community Employment Services site will be stepping into the role of Interim Manager for Humber’s Community Employment Services (HCCES) starting Tuesday, October 10, 2023. That role was recently vacated following the retirement of Elana Lewis.

Azieb first joined Humber in 2007 as the Coordinator of the Employment Counselling Centre in Brampton. In 2010, she transitioned to the role of Site Supervisor to support one of five community-based employment services sites delivering a new employment support model rolled out by Government in that year and she has been at the helm of one of our sites since. During her tenure, the North Etobicoke site has consistently outperformed targets and built critical partnerships with other community services in that catchment area. Azieb has also acted as our lead and liaison on both the Better Jobs Ontario file and the TRIEC newcomer mentorship program. Alongside her colleagues, she has participated in the Casino Woodbine Employment Labour Market Plan Committee since 2018. More recently, Azieb took on additional responsibilities to support the Brampton site which was a pilot site for the Ministry’s current service model transformation and, with the team, outperformed key targets.

Humber’s Community Employment Services (HCCES) is a partnership between Humber and the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development to deliver employment supports to high needs communities in the GTA. This unit is highly regarded and trusted by the communities they serve. They have a long track record of delivering measurable outcomes and gains to those they serve and supported countless marginalized community members in achieving long-term sustainable employment.

Azieb has a Master’s degree in Management and Organizational Development from United States International University. Her education, together with her many years of experience in the employment services sector, her direct experience with the new Employment Ontario service delivery model, and her business acumen, positions Azieb well to lead this unit into this next phase of their journey. Please join me in congratulating Azieb on this appointment.

Warm regards,

Chantal Joy

Centre for Innovation in Health & Wellness

As one of the newer Centres of Innovation, the Centre for Innovation in Health & Wellness (CIHW) started its journey last year in February 2022, around the same time when the world was opening up post-pandemic. Emerging out of the engagement process with Humber campus partners and external community partners, was a road map for CIHW aligned with Humber's strategic priorities on an inclusive healthy campus and Humber's commitment for stronger and innovative community partnerships.

In less than 18 months since it started, CIHW has experienced significant success, largely because of the incredible support from everyone at Humber which made this possible. I am excited about the different opportunities coming our way at CIHW and look forward to engaging, connecting and collaborating with many more students, staff, and faculty. Should you have an innovative idea in health and wellness and want to collaborate with us, please feel free to connect with us at cihw@humber.ca
