Accidents happen, it is part of the learning process. However, prevention is the key to avoiding many accidents. Part of prevention is reporting and learning from events that could have led to an accident. This is known as the Near Miss Incident Reporting process.

Humber defines a near miss as an occurrence that does not result in injury/illness or property damage, but which, under slightly different circumstances, could have resulted in harm to people, damage to property, or loss to process.

At Humber, all near miss incidents must be reported promptly, and should always be about collaboration to learn and prevent injury/property damage.

If you have a near miss,

  1. you should discuss it with your supervisor, and
  2. submit the Health & Safety Incident Report, identifying the incident as a near miss, to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS).

This way the college is made aware of potential hazards and OHS can work with employees and managers to strategize how to mitigate these risks. Reporting near misses is an important part of supporting a culture of safety.

The national Moose Hide Campaign Day takes place on Thursday, May 12. This day is dedicated to the grassroots movement of Indigenous and non-Indigenous men and boys standing up against violence toward women and children. Over the years, it has grown into a national campaign to engage all Canadians, with more than 2,000 participating communities and organizations across the country.

This year, Humber has become an Ambassador Campus to further spread the word about this critical initiative across our community. To commemorate the day, IE&E is providing official moose hide pins for Humber community members to pin on their clothing to show their support.

You can pick up pins on-campus on the following days:

  • Tuesday, May 10 at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. – Lakeshore Campus, Welcome Centre 301   
  • Wednesday, May 11 at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. – North Campus, LRC 2136  

On Thursday, May 12, we encourage you to post an image of yourself wearing the pin on social media and include a pledge of how you will take a stand against gender-based violence. If you made a campaign pledge last year, please include what you did over the past year to fulfill your pledge. Ensure to include the #MooseHideCampaignDay, @humberindigenous, and @humbercollege in your post/message.

I am pleased to announce that Brad Herd has accepted the role of Associate Dean, FB, Graduate Certificates, Human Resources, Sport Management and the International Graduate School, effective May 2.

Brad has worked as a faculty member, program coordinator, and international educator for the FB since 2003. In addition to fifteen years of post-secondary experience, Brad has over 15 years of business experience as a vice-president as well as a chief operating officer. Highlights of Brad’s career includes building Canada’s largest funding database and proprietary search tool, launching North America’s largest ethnic radio network and provides consulting services to various corporations.

At Humber, Brad has worked as a small business mentor through the Centre for Entrepreneurship, was a member of the IGS visioning team as well as a member of College Council and the strategic planning committee. As a program coordinator, Brad has been the first point of contact for students, industry and the college to promote, grow and manage programs.

I look forward to working with Brad and his team to ensure that we continue to create opportunities for teaching and learning in this cluster.

Humber’s Elections Guidelines and Materials from Elections Canada

The Ontario election has officially begun. Please familiarize yourself with Humber’s Elections Guidelines and let us know if you would like to access Elections Canada’s voting awareness assets.  

Ontario is now in an election period. Please familiarize yourself with Humber’s Elections Guidelines which outline the terms of political engagement between now and June 2nd (Election Day). These guidelines also detail the actions the college takes to ensure our faculty and staff have the resources and support they need during this period, including situations where candidates are looking to recruit volunteers or distribute literature to students, faculty and/or staff.  

As a reminder, any requests for an on-campus or virtual engagement with a candidate during the election period should be brought to the attention of Kelly Jackson, the Vice-President of External Affairs and Professional Learning (Kelly.jackson@humber.ca) prior to organizing any event or engagement with students, staff or faculty.   

Also, GRMC has obtained digital assets from Elections Canada designed to promote voting awareness among young people during the election period. These assets have specifically been designed with post-secondary institutions in mind. In addition to the digital assets, we received a limited amount of postcards and posters which are currently at North Campus. If you’re interesting in accessing Elections Canada digital assets and/or postcards and posters, please reach out to Bethany Sharpe (Bethany.sharpe@humber.ca).

The need to take time for ourselves and our family is an important part of a healthy work-life balance. We encourage all staff to schedule and plan their yearly vacation entitlement in consultation with their manager. 

In order to ensure vacation requests are considered fairly and effectively, please refer to the ‘Vacation Accrual Summary Document’ in HRMS as listed below for your employee group. It will provide information on how vacation accruals work within the HRMS and how you can use the accrued vacation days to request and plan for vacation. Key points to consider:

SUMMER HOURS, EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION DAY AND STATUTORY HOLIDAYS 

Summer Hours 

During the period from May to August, where operationally feasible, management has the authority and discretion to establish summer working hours for their employees. These hours may vary from regular operating hours. 

Summer hours usually mean that employees continue to work their full number of hours each week but may start and finish earlier or later in the day. When considering requests for summer hours, managers are encouraged to engage in conversation with their employees to discuss feasible options while ensuring regular customer service is maintained. 

Should there be any questions regarding the scheduling and/or taking of vacation, or the observance of holidays, please contact your HR Business Partner. 

Summer Early Closings 

Early closing days is a perk that allows staff to get away a bit early on the Friday of long weekends during the summer period. Although we encourage this to continue for 2022 wherever operationally feasible, we recognize with most employees working remotely and the range of public health measures that may limit travel, this benefit may not have the same value as it has in the past. 

Managers are encouraged to support early Friday closing for statutory holidays that fall on a Monday, as listed below. Staff who are scheduled to work on the Friday before the holiday Monday, should be encouraged to finish work one and a half hours (1.5) early the Friday before the long weekend, from the end of their regular workday. 

Subject to the operational requirements of the division/department, early closures for 2022 apply to the following: 

  • Friday, May 20 (prior to Victoria Day) 
  • Thursday, June 30 (prior to Canada Day) 
  • Friday, July 29 (prior to the Civic Holiday) 

Staff who are required to work full hours on any of the early closing days shall be given one and a half hours (1.5) off on another day during the summer, to be scheduled by their manager.

Statutory Holiday Pay 

Staff required to work on a statutory holiday shall be entitled to paid time and one-half for each hour worked, plus holiday pay or equivalent time off in lieu. Refer to the applicable collective agreement or admin staff policy for further details on eligibility and qualifying rules for statutory holiday pay. 

Part-time staff may be eligible for holiday pay, plus time and one half pay, for hours worked on any statutory holiday. To qualify for statutory holiday pay, part-time employees must have worked on their scheduled day of work preceding and following the recognized holiday. 

Payments made to all part-time staff shall be equal to the total amount of regular wages and vacation pay payable to the employee in the pay prior to the statutory holiday, divided by the number of days worked in the prior pay period.

A technical issue occurred with the Partial-Load Registry e-form on the final day to register (April 30, 2022). To enable those who attempted to register their interest on April 30, 2022 and were unable to do so, we will be reopening the registry all day Thursday, May 5 and all day Friday, May 6 (Thursday, May 5, 2022 at 12 a.m. until Friday May 6, 2022 at 11:59 p.m.).

In order to register for the Partial Load Registry, please visit hrs.humber.ca/partialloadregistry. To register, you will require your Humber employee number as well as your N number. Your Humber employee number can be found on your pay stub, or you can ask your manager for it. Your N number is used to log into the system. Once you register, you will receive an email confirmation at the email address provided, please retain the confirmation for your records.

As a reminder, this registry period will cover the winter term of 2023, spring term of 2023 and summer term of 2023.

Please note: prior registration does not carry over from one registry period to another. It is required that you register again prior to the April 30, 2022 deadline or during this new time from Thursday, May 05, 2022 at 12:00am until Friday May 06, 2022 at 11:59pm for the winter term of 2023, spring term of 2023 and summer term of 2023. The College and Union highly encourage all Partial Load Faculty to tender a submission for the Partial Load Registry.
