Humber’s Office of Sustainability is proud to announce the addition of nine new designated Low-Waste Event Spaces, in addition to the four already in place at the North and Lakeshore campuses.

Low-Waste Event Spaces are a partnership between the Office of Sustainability, Campus Services, and Chartwells. They aim to reduce waste output across campus and align with the federal government’s Single-Use Plastics Prohibition Regulation, and keeping unnecessary plastics from going to landfill.

A recent waste audit of the North and Lakeshore campuses found that Humber disposed of over 1,118.08 metric tons of waste between 2022 and 2023 – that’s close to 75 pounds per campus user!

Currently, only events catered through Chartwells are subject to the conditions of the Low Waste Event Spaces. When ordering, china service will be the default at no additional cost. All event attendees are highly encouraged to bring reusable containers to take away leftover food.

Student events are not yet part of this initiative, though eventually all spaces and categories of events will be transitioned to low waste as we work with the Humber community to find solutions that meet needs while decreasing our impact on the environment.

The following is a list of low-waste event spaces:

North Campus

  • Doris Tallon Community Room NX
  • E-Concourse
  • B101 Boardroom
  • T-Residence Conference Room
  • Residence Dining Hall
  • Barrett CTI
  • LRC Concourse

Lakeshore Campus

  • A Blue Room
  • L Community Room
  • AB Café Dining Hall
  • L Building Café 2nd Floor

What is Friendlier?

Friendlier is a reusable food container program introduced to reduce the single-use packing Humber sends to landfill and align with the federal government’s ban on several types of single-use plastic. Friendlier containers are BPA-free and can be re-circulated up to 100 times.

How it works:

  1. Receive your meal in a friendlier container and pay a $0.50 refundable deposit
  2. Download the Friendlier app (Android)
  3. Scan the container using the Friendlier app, after enjoying your meal
  4. Return your container to one of the many blue Friendlier collection bins on campus
  5. Receive your deposit back within 1-2 weeks on the Friendlier app

Over 200,000 plastic food containers have avoided landfill since the launch of #ReuseHumber, the initiative supporting reusable container programs on campus.

Humber Libraries has developed a self-paced Academic Integrity and Citation Awareness Module. The accessible and multimodal module takes an educative approach to academic integrity. It engages learners with scenarios, activities, and videos that introduce the values and practices of academic integrity. Faculty are welcome to link to or embed this module in Blackboard course sites using the Instructor's Guide, which details two options: one with, and one without, a certificate of completion. The module takes 20 to 60 minutes to complete.

After completing this tutorial, students will be able to:

  • Recognize the importance of academic integrity when engaging in scholarly work
  • Recall the fundamental values of academic integrity
  • Identify and describe different forms of academic misconduct
  • Recall expectations related to citation and practical strategies for avoiding academic misconduct
  • Identify additional citation resources and research support available through Humber Libraries

We welcome your questions and feedback at library@humber.ca.

Medical Response Plans (MRP) exist to ensure faculty receive the information they need in the event that a learner experiences a medical incident during class such as a seizure or a life-threatening allergic reaction. MRPs are developed by Accessibility Consultants in Accessible Learning Services (ALS) if a student discloses medical information that necessitates a plan.

  • A MRP is developed and will outline steps to be taken by faculty and Public Safety when appropriate if a medical incident occurs.

  • Faculty are never required to perform any medical intervention. There is an expectation that they will alert the proper resources (e.g., emergency services, Humber Public Safety) to attend to the learner as appropriate.

  • MRPs are sent directly to faculty, Public Safety and the appropriate Associate Dean via email by ALS staff. In most cases, the MRP will be issued at the start of the semester but depending on when a learner connects with ALS, it may be issued during the semester.

  • Should you receive an MRP, be sure to review it carefully and note the contact information for Public Safety.

Visit our ALS Information for Faculty website to learn more about accommodating students with disabilities.

Please email us at accessible-learning@humber.ca with suggestions for key accessibility-related topics that you would like us to address through the Communiqué.

At Humber, we value the health and well-being of our staff and students and want to support YOU every step of the way.

To support this commitment, Humber has launched humber.ca/healthyYOU, an online healthy community hub that is a central site for well-being resources for students and employees.

The Hub also includes Humber’s Well-being Strategy, which focuses on four pillars: mental, physical, financial, and social health and well-being. We provide support to the overall health and well-being of our employees through a variety of resources and initiatives.

Humber's Social Health and Well-being Commitment

To support our employees’ social health and well-being, the following resources are available:

  • Career Milestones Recognition
The Career Milestone program recognizes faculty and staff on completing full-time years of service. We celebrate their achievements throughout their employee journey from their first year, and in five year increments up to forty years of service.

  • Employee Resource Groups
Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are voluntary, employee-led groups that foster a diverse and inclusive workplace aligned with organizational mission, values, goals, business practices, and objectives. Humber’s Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) include an 2SLGBTQ+ ERG and a Black/African ERG.

  • President’s Awards and Breakfast
The President's Awards have been a proud tradition of recognizing excellence among Humber faculty and staff. Each year, the President's Awards are bestowed on employees who achieve excellence in various fields and criteria, at the Annual President's Breakfast and Recognition Ceremony.

  • Professional Learning Resources
Humber is committed to investing in professional learning for all employees, to build their capability and enable them to contribute to achieving the College’s strategic goals. Employees have access to learning opportunities in a variety of forms and styles to suit each learner.

  • Remote Working Resources
Humber’s Remote Working Policy is grounded in the philosophy that employees will work productively to achieve institutional goals and objectives when supported by a culture of performance and care.

  • Retiree Recognition
At Humber, we recognize and value the dedication, hard work and contribution of our employees. Each year, a Retirees’ Dinner is held to celebrate the employees who have retired at Humber in the past year.

  • The Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion
The Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion (the Centre) provides human rights and equity programs and services to the Humber Community. The Centre ensures that equity, diversity and inclusion are instilled throughout Humber.

  • The Unlearning Circle
This group’s mission is to foster the development of knowledge and skills among white Humber employees to continually identify, disrupt and address systemic racism and colonized ways of being, knowing, and doing.

The Ontario Human Rights Commission requires that all employers provide ongoing education and training on the organization’s human rights policy. All Humber employees (full-time, non-full-time, work-study) are required to update their knowledge of Humber’s Human Rights Policy and Complaint Resolution Procedures every two years.

This online, asynchronous workshop on Blackboard will provide an introduction to Ontario Human Rights Code, discrimination, harassment, and Humber’s Human Rights and Harassment Policy. Learners will gain an understanding of their rights and responsibilities and how all these concepts intersect and interact in the learning and working environment.

If you require access to this training, please contact humanrights@humber.ca.
