Dear Humber faculty and staff 

This is a friendly reminder to transfer your H-Drive personal files and data to OneDrive before June 29, 2022.  

All H-Drive files will be permanently deleted after this date. Some may have already transferred their files from the H-Drive. If so, please ensure all existing files and folders that remain in your H-Drive storage have been deleted. If files have not been transferred out of H-Drive storage, departmental training is available to assist with the transition.

Greetings all,

I am pleased to announce that Sacha Ally has been promoted to advisor, Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion and Patricia Suleiman, has been promoted to manager, Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion.

In Sacha’s role, he will conduct human rights investigations and will assume the lead for Early Interventions. Sacha will remain the chair of the College-Wide Communication and Engagement Working Group in the EDI Taskforce.

In Patricia’s role, she will manage legislative compliance – including the Ontario Human Rights Code and Workplace Harassment as defined by the Occupational Health & Safety Act. She will assume the role of Co-Chair Access & Equity: Employees Working Group. Sacha Ally and Kathryn Edgett report to Patricia Suleiman, manager, Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion.

Patricia reports to the director, Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion. Do join me in congratulating Sacha and Patricia.

The Humber College research team led by Professor Timothy Wong in the Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology has worked on a project that addresses an issue worsened by the pandemic: crowded washrooms. The research team sought to explore the question: How can users find out which washrooms have lower occupancy rates at a given time?

The project resulted in a design for a microcontroller-based counter that uses ultrasonic sensors to track washroom traffic. The project's objective is not to provide an absolute correct count but to reflect the current occupancy of all washrooms at Humber College and provide a means to direct washroom traffic across the many locations.  

“Smart washrooms” is an up-and-coming trend in custodial operations, and Humber research teams are continuing to work on developing appropriate solutions.

Humber strives to create an inclusive, supportive environment for all people. It is our responsibility to extend this commitment to inclusion into every text and publication. To meet this commitment, the college developed an Inclusive Language Guide.

The guide is meant to provide a high-level overview of inclusive language and highlight terminology not to be used.

Readers are encouraged to do their own research as part of reconciliation and ongoing equity, diversity and inclusion education and resources have been included to help with this. The guide will be updated annually to reflect the latest information as language continues to evolve.

The Inclusive Language Guide can be found on Humber’s Brand Resources Page under the Communications and Media Relations drop-down menu.

On March 10, 2022, project partners from Canada and Kenya came together online to celebrate the close of the Kenya Education for Employment Program (KEFEP-02), a five-year, $1.7 million-dollar initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada, through Colleges and Institutes Canada. The partnership consisted of three National Kenyan Polytechnics and three Canadian institutions led by Humber College.

Since 2017, the project has developed new and innovative competency-based education and training (CBET) programs in key sectors of the Kenyan economy to increase employment and economic opportunities for youth. The Closing Forum reunited Humber's project participants, including Farzad Rayegani, Senior Dean of Humber's Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology, and Kerry Johnson, Program Coordinator of Sustainable Energy and Building Technology Program. Their team supported the curriculum development process by providing technical training and advice on modern equipment that aligns with industry needs.

Keynote speaker Gina Antonacci, Senior Vice President, Academic, shared her experience providing training on institutionalizing a gender perspective in the structures and practices of the institutions, working alongside Nancy Simms, Director of Humber's Centre for Human Rights, Equity and Diversity.

Other significant contributors to the KEFEP-02 project include The Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences, The Faculty of Business, The Faculty of Media and Creative Arts and the Office and Research and Innovation. The past five years have been a transformative experience, empowering teachers, and students, connecting industry partners and collaborating for the future of TVET education.

COSSID: New Address and Resources

This update is to inform you that there have been updates to COSSID for this upcoming year. COSSID will no longer be accessible via Humber HQ; instead, it will be at its own URL at humber.ca/cossid.

New resources and videos are available to support this year’s COSSID process. These resources are also available off the main COSSID page:

I am pleased to introduce Tessa Soltendieck (she/her) to Humber as the new manager, Sustainability. 

Tessa has worked in sustainability for more than seven years, specializing in environmental education, communication, and engagement. Most recently, Tessa worked as the Community Engagement Manager for the Federal Climate Change Program at Environmental Defence Canada. Her work focused on empowering everyday Canadians to act on climate change through political advocacy.

Tessa received a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from McGill University, with a double-minor in Environment and Field Studies from the McGill School of Environment. She also holds a Master of Development Practice from the School of Environment, Enterprise & Development at the University of Waterloo.

As an experienced sustainability practitioner, Tessa will play a key role in developing the vision, framework and strategies that support our progressing understanding of environmental stewardship and continue our leadership in campus sustainability.

Tessa started the role on March 28. Whether in person or online, please join me in welcoming Tessa!

About the project

This Winter 2022 project is a collaboration between two programs/courses at the Faculty of Business:

  • BUS 2504 Web Development course, taught by Hanadi Alnawab and Marg Reffell, Digital Business Management & Fashion Management BComm programs
  • BAKE 253 Bakery Management and Entrepreneurship, taught by Chef Alastair Gray, Baking and Pastry Arts Management program

The Web Development students worked on developing information websites for their colleagues in the Bakery Management and Entrepreneurship course during the semester.

Humber College has a Professional Development Policy provision that awards scholarships to employees seeking to advance their education through discipline-specific post-secondary degrees, Master or Doctoral degrees at an accredited post-secondary institution. 

All full-time academic, support, and admin employees who have completed their probationary period are eligible to apply. Funding under this program is for tuition fees, for a maximum of four (4) years for each individual program up to a maximum of five thousand dollars ($5,000) per fiscal year.

In collaboration with Program Planning, Development and Renewal, the Office of the Registrar, and the Recognition of Prior Learning - Strategic Enrolment Management committee, we are pleased to present a series of resources to Humber faculty and staff that support student mobility. Recognizing prior learning that is undertaken formally and informally increases student access to higher education by facilitating mobility between Humber’s various credential levels, as well as with other postsecondary institutions. When possible, Humber will maximize a student’s ability to satisfy program requirements through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), which includes the following three components:  

  • Transfer Credit - the granting of credit for coursework undertaken within another program or recognized institution  
  • Pathways - established academic routes in which students move from one program to another in a seamless fashion. Graduates may have their previous program learning recognized for block transfer into advanced semesters of the receiving program.  
  • Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) - a process that allows individuals to identify, document, have assessed and gain recognition for prior learning. The learning may be formal, informal, or experiential.

  1. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Guide - an essential resource that provides detailed information on RPL including resources and step-by-step guides. 
  2. Academic Pathway Proposal Form - assists in tracking the development of the pathway and encourages greater planning during the development process. 
  3. Block Transfer Schedule of Study - used to create or revise a block transfer schedule of study into diplomas or degrees. 
  4. Assessing Courses for Transfer Credit Guide - a short guide for faculty and staff when assessing transfer credits. 
  5. Gap Analysis Tool – a resource to assess programs and create new block transfers.
