April 17, 2023 to June 16, 2023

As part of the Finch West Light Rail Transit (LRT) Project, crews will be doing road widening works along Finch Avenue West between Hwy 27 and Humber College Boulevard.

The work is scheduled for April 17, 2023, and will last for six (6) weeks, approximately. To safely perform the work, the temporary traffic staging as shown above will remain in place.

Work may be rescheduled due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.

Please take extra care when navigating near work sites, and always make eye contact with the driver before crossing in front of any equipment or vehicle.

Minor field modifications may occur when needed to complete work safely and minimize impact on the public.

We will continue to monitor noise and vibration levels during these activities to identify the need for mitigative actions.

Image of flags flown at half-mast in front of the LRC at Humber College's North Campus

Dear Community,

It is with heavy hearts that we inform you of the passing of Zion Allison, a first-year student in the 3D Animation Program. As a community, we are deeply saddened by this loss and our thoughts and condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.

To honor Zion and their memory, we will be lowering the flags at the college to half-mast on April 11, 2023. This gesture serves as a symbol of our respect and admiration for Zion and the impact he had on our community during his time with us.

We recognize that grief is a difficult and personal experience, if you need support or are supporting someone and want to talk, please reach out to someone close to you, your Program Coordinator or Associate Dean, or EAP directly (1.844.880.9142).

If students are looking for support, please reach out to Student Wellness and Counselling (swac@humber.ca). Alternatively, if at any time they need immediate personal support or counselling, they can access the Good2Talk Helpline at 1-866-925-5454, or use Therapy Assist Online (https://ca.taoconnect.org/login), which provides online and mobile tools.

Once again, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Zion.

Sincerely,

Ian Crookshank

Please note this month’s new and improved features in Blackboard Ultra. For more details, please follow the links below:

Multiple Grading Schemas: Add, Edit, Copy

Instructors can now add, copy, and edit up to 100 grading schemas per course and choose the best grading schema for each assessment in a course. Items copied from other courses will keep their grading schemas.

Submissions Page – Sorting Controls

For a more efficient grade review experience, instructors can now sort students by grade in the Submissions page to identify student submissions at a grade boundary. This option is available in case any necessary changes need to be made before posting grades.

Gradable Items View Improvements

  • Instructors can now sort the records of any column (e.g. by grading status) to find information more easily.
  • Clicking on the assessment name now takes instructors to the selected assessment.
  • Selecting '# to grade’ navigates to a Needs Grading filtered Submissions page for quicker entry into the grading process.
  • The Post column provides status information for an assessment and simplifies the action to post all grades for the assessment.

Discussion Navigation Improvements

The Discussions menu now includes three tabs: Discussion, Student Activity, and Grading & Participation (appears only when the discussion is marked for grading).

Deactivated Students Excluded in Student Progress Reports

The Student Progress Report now excludes students who have been deactivated (i.e. students who are no longer in the course). The number of students in this report should match the number of students actively taking the course.

Student Overview – New Access Points

Instructors can now access the Student Overview page from 3 locations: Roster, Messages, and Discussions. Instructors can still access this page by selecting a student in the Gradebook.

To the Humber Community,

I am pleased to report that the Humber Board of Governors recently approved the proposed 2023-2024 budget and business plan.

This past fiscal year, the college’s budget and business plan were focused on post-pandemic recovery and supporting evolution of a more flexible and hybrid working and learning environment at Humber. Now, with the completed return to in-person activities, we are able to focus on creating the best possible experiences for our students online and on campus.

Planning for 2023-2024

Many of the initiatives in the 2023-2024 Business Plan stem from the Academic and Digital Campus Plans and reflect our promise to create an exceptional student experience.

The Business Plan goals focus on two major areas:

  • Teaching and Learning Excellence
    • Providing students with cutting-edge knowledge through innovation teaching and learning techniques
    • Offering expanded program offerings and services
    • Providing flexible learning through a wide array of credentials and pathways as well as work-integrated learning experience to succeed in an evolving workplace.
  • Exceptional Student Experience
    • Building the organizational culture and infrastructure that nourishes student success and learners’ ability to thrive, through the offering of accessible, inclusive, heathy, sustainable and technologically advanced campuses and online learning environments
    • Embedding equity, diversity, inclusion as well as Indigenous ways of being and doing into all approaches.

Planning Context for the 2023-2024 Budget

Since 2020, Humber has continued to experience impacts on operations and academic delivery due to changing learner preferences, economic and labour market conditions and the effects of COVID-19. For fiscal year 2023-24, the College anticipates that overall enrolment will increase and surpass pre-pandemic levels. This is largely due to growth in international students, while continued pressure is felt system-wide in the domestic market as a result of a strong labour market and demographic trends.

The new budget supports the College’s goals and objectives and clearly demonstrates that Humber remains financially sound and committed to the principles of fiscal management and sustainability. We continue to invest in major capital projects including the construction of the Humber Cultural Hub and the expansion of the Centre for Skilled Trades and Technology.

The full Business Plan for 2023-2024 is now posted and I encourage everyone in the Humber community to read and discuss them with their teams.

This is the first Business Plan and Budget of my tenure at Humber, and I believe they lay out exciting and ambitious initiatives that will continue to strengthen our global, polytechnic leadership.

Envisioning our Future

This year marks the end of the 2018-2023 Strategic Plan and the start of a new chapter at Humber. In the coming year, we will be engaging the Humber community and our partners to create our 2030 vision for transformative and socially engaged post-secondary education. We will have more to share about the Humber Inspired process in the coming weeks, including how you can contribute to the discussion.

I know whether we’re talking about today or ten years from now, we will continue to be focused on providing learners with high-quality programs and work-integrated learning that sets them up for success today and tomorrow. We will offer outstanding and innovative programs and services and foster an equitable, inclusive, healthy and sustainable college.

Every day, I am impressed by the commitment and dedication that each of you demonstrates in your work, in supporting our learners and each other. With a new roadmap in hand for the coming fiscal year and a focus on co-creating the vision for the future of polytechnic education at Humber and in Canada, I know that we will continue to achieve great things together.

Thank you for all that you do.
