Humber ORI announces the 2022 College and Community Innovation program award recipients

Humber continues its journey to be a leading light in Polytechnic Research and Innovation.

Humber’s Office of Research and Innovation is delighted to announce the 2022 College and Community Innovation program award recipients. Please join us in congratulating our rock star researchers who received the highly competitive College and Community Social Innovation Fund (CCSIF) grants.

Heidi Siu and Francisca Burg-Feret, professors in the Faculty of Health Sciences & Wellness, received a CCSIF grant for their project “Partnering for health access: Developing an innovative health clinic” in collaboration with the Canadian Mental Health Association, Mennonite New Life Centre of Toronto, and St. Francis Table. This project is also supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

Maria Jacome, professor in the Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology, received a CCSIF grant for the project “Caring for the Thunderbird’s Nest: Geophysical and machine learning solutions to characterize and monitor inequitable exposures to ground and air pollution with Fort William First Nation” in collaboration with Fort William First Nation and the University of Toronto.

We are equally delighted to announce the success of our application for Humber’s new NSERC Mobilize Grant. This grant will replace the previous NSERC Engage grants and will be administered by Humber’s Office of Research & Innovation. Information workshops will be held shortly regarding applications for funding.

Humber continues its journey to be a leading light in Polytechnic Research and Innovation.

Phishing poses a serious threat to the Humber community and can impact both the institution as well as our community members personally. It is because of this risk that we are reaching out to our student community to ensure that they remain aware of emails which may appear suspicious.

What is Phishing?

Phishing is a form of social engineering, whereby cybercriminals send emails purporting to be from reputable companies or individuals and is the most common form of social engineering used today.

For more information check out this article on the forms of phishing

What is Social Engineering?

Social engineering is the art of manipulating people to gain access to private information, access to systems, or valuables. When reviewing emails in your Humber student mailbox, please be vigilant as it may be a phishing attempt. To help assist you in identifying suspicious emails, here are some additional resources to educate you about phishing.

Visit Get Cyber Safe to learn more about phishing, cyber-attacks and staying safe online.

In our efforts to further protect our community from this type of fraudulent and harmful activity, Humber ITS is providing optional Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to all Humber students when accessing Microsoft 365 products. We are encouraging students to be early adopters and enroll for MFA throughout #CyberMonth2022. Cybersecurity threats are becoming increasingly complex, and MFA will help protect your student account by adding an extra verification step that ensures they are who they say they are when they log in. This helps prevent hackers from gaining unauthorized access to our student accounts even if they are able to compromise a student’s password.

If you have any questions, contact the I.T. Support Centre at 416.675.6622 x8888 or humber.ca/techtalk.

Humber’s quarterly research and innovation magazine SPARK Issue #5 is here!

Humber’s quarterly research and innovation magazine SPARK Issue #5 is here!

SPARK Issue #5 shines the spotlight on creativity and applied research projects. At Humber, expressions of creativity often extend far beyond the individual—its effect rippling across various channels to find its way to classrooms, workshops, research projects and the broader community. The new issue invites you to explore five inspiring expressions of creativity from the Humber community.

In SPARK Issue #5, you will also learn about applied research projects conducted by Humber faculty members, researchers and industry partners, who are continually solving new challenges and making a difference in the community. From creating robotic painting arms to improving the digital transformation of Ontario’s alternative dispute resolution sector, Humber’s researchers and scholars demonstrate that the sky is the limit when it comes to innovative applied research projects.

With a welcoming editor’s note from Anju Kakkar, managing editor, Humber Press, ORI, the new issue also includes contributions from ORI’s associate deans and a short Q&A with the authors of three research studies published in the 2022 special issue of the Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Education (JIPE). The research studies address the timely subject of responding to challenges in innovative and sustainable ways.

No matter where your curiosity lies, SPARK is here to inspire you in your research and innovation journey.

Humber College has released a pair of transformative plans that will help shape and guide the future of the college for the next several years.

The Digital Campus Plan and the Academic Plan are forward-looking, three-year documents that identify future-focused priorities and strategic opportunities to support ongoing teaching and learning innovation at Humber. The two plans, which are for the years 2023 to 2026, were developed simultaneously and with close integration.

The plans were developed to align and integrate with Humber’s EDI Framework and are guided by the college’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion and Indigenous ways of being, knowing and doing to ensure that equity-deserving groups are supported.

Academic Plan priorities

The Academic Plan has identified three priorities:

  • Expanding Humber’s range of credentials, pathways, and recognition of prior learning processes to support transitions between high school, post-secondary education, and employment;
  • Creating flexible program and course delivery options that enable students to personalize their learning experience while meeting their long- and short-term educational goals;
  • Supporting faculty and staff to initiate projects that enable innovation and create new ways of teaching and learning at Humber.

Digital Campus plan priorities

The Digital Campus Plan has also identified three priorities:

  • Developing the digital fluency of Humber’s students, faculty and staff so they can be engaged global citizens;
  • Simplifying and personalizing the experience for prospects, applicants, students, learners and alumni as they explore what Humber has to offer and access services;
  • Supporting Humber employees in the transformation and the future of work so they can collaborate, be effective and stay connected with campus culture.
