Nahannee Schuitemaker

I am pleased to announce Nahannee Schuitemaker as Humber’s first, Indigenous Curriculum & Pedagogy Specialist, Indigenous Education & Engagement.

Reporting to the Associate Dean, Indigenous Education and Engagement, the Indigenous Curriculum Specialist (ICS) works collaboratively with the IE&E, PPDR, RI, and T&L teams to provide professional-level consultation and collaborative support for the development of innovative and engaging Indigenous curriculum content, practicum experiences and work-integrated learning, and quality review. Applying knowledge of, and experience with, Indigenous pedagogies and decolonizing methodologies.

Nahannee Schuitemaker is of Kanien’keha:ka, French Canadian and Dutch descent. She has lived from coast to coast on Turtle Island and returned to Ontario in 2017 to begin her Ph.D. in Indigenous Studies at Trent University. Nahannee completed her Master of Arts in Curriculum Studies at the University of British Columbia in which she focused on the stories of mixed Indigenous women and their connection to land away from their own ancestral territories. She holds a double major BA in Psychology and Spanish with a focus on human rights and genocide studies, also completed at UBC. An artist and advocate at heart, her work and life journey has allowed her to work, build relationships with, and learn from fellow Indigenous peoples and communities.

Relocating from Vancouver to Ontario was propelled by her desire to be closer to Haudenosaunee communities in an effort to learn more about her Kanien’keha:ka roots and to embody her identity in a good way. Nahannee joined the Indigenous Education and Engagement team in the fall of 2020 as a part-time doctoral fellow and her enthusiasm for the work she was involved with led her to apply for her current position as Indigenous Curriculum and Pedagogy Specialist. While in this position, her work will include international collaborations delivering unique curricula, college-wide initiatives to build faculty and staff capacity, contributing to the establishment of Indigenous Research Protocols, and other Indigenous-centered initiatives to foster inclusivity and awareness at Humber College.

Please join me in welcoming Nahannee to this new exciting role.

The Guardian app is available for free in Apple or Google Play stores. The self-assessment must be completed prior to each day you come to campus. For example, if you are planning to be on campus on Monday and Tuesday in the same week, you must complete the assessment on both days.

You can access the self-assessment by clicking on COVID-19 Updates and then COVID-19 Self-Assessment.

In order to prevent a slow down at entry ways, you are asked to complete the app prior to attending campus and have your approval screen ready to show to designated staff who will be reviewing the approvals to attend campus at campus entrances.

Humber and the Department of Public Safety reserve the right to ask any student, staff and faculty for proof of daily completion of the COVID-19 Self-Assessment.

If you do not have a smart phone or are unable to download or update the Humber Guardian app, view an alternate format of the questions. Contact the Department of Public Safety at 416.675.8500 or publicsafety@humber.ca if you have any questions.

Please visit our Return to Campus website and www.humber.ca/updates for more information.

Note: Those who already have the app will need to update the app to have the most up-to-date information. From the Guardian’s home screen, users can click on About/Preferences > Data Update > Check for Updates.

Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber are committed to the elimination of sexual violence for all members of our community, and as such, we are thrilled to be launching a new sexual violence prevention and education module for all students! It Takes All of Us is an asynchronous learning module that takes approximately one hour to complete; through a series of videos and learning checks, participants will learn about sexual violence, consent, bystander intervention, and supporting survivors of sexual violence. To incentivize participation, students who complete the It Takes All of Us module and exit survey by October 3, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. will be entered into a draw to win a gift card prize!

Humber College students can access the module in Blackboard through the Sexual Violence Prevention & Education Training course; similarly, Guelph-Humber students can access the module in CourseLink through the Sexual Violence Support Module course. For any questions regarding It Takes All of Us, to learn more about how to incorporate it into your courses or student staff training, or for staff and faculty who may be interested in participating in the module themselves, please email bystanderprogram@humber.ca.

As part of Humber’s Integrated Energy Master Plan (IEMP), Facilities Management is constantly looking for opportunities to save energy and costs. With this in mind, we have reviewed our existing practice to condition spaces as normal on public holidays. Given the significantly reduced occupancy, going forward, we are implementing a change to limit conditioning (heating, cooling and ventilation) on public holidays in most areas of the College.

By limiting conditioning, we are keeping sustainability at the forefront of our campus buildings and operations and significantly reducing energy used by the facilities.

The following areas are excluded and will be conditioned as normal:

  • North Campus
    • LRC 3rd & 4th floors
    • Nx building first floor public safety offices
    • Residence buildings R, S & T
    • Gymnasium
  • Lakeshore Campus
    • L building first floor learning commons
    • Gymnasium
    • Residence building R

Please note that the reduced conditioning will only apply to the specific date that the public holiday falls on. The College will continue to be conditioned as normal over the rest of the weekend.

For any special requests or events that require conditioning (outside the areas listed above), please submit a service request through the Facilities Management Archibus Work Order Request system (Go to http:www.humber.ca/facilities and click on “Place Service Request” to complete and submit a work order) or by calling Facilities Management at 416.675.6622 x4444. We ask that service requests be submitted a minimum of two business days in advance of the holiday.

If you would like to learn more about how we are implementing best practice in sustainable design, construction and the operation of new and renovated buildings, you can find information in our Sustainability Plan 2019-2024 and our Integrated Energy Master Plan.

Humber College is seeking students, staff, and faculty to join the Committee on Preventing & Responding to Sexual Violence. The Committee is comprised of students, staff, and faculty volunteers from Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber and will work to grow existing policy, support, and awareness initiatives, and ensure compliance with legislative requirements.

The deadline to indicate your interest is Monday, September 20, 2021 at 9 a.m. via the online application form.

Committee mandate:

The Committee is responsible for providing thoughtful, objective, and strategic leadership to the implementation of sexual violence prevention, awareness and education initiatives, including policy development and supports. A successful Committee will see increased awareness and engagement, a culture of courage as evidenced by increased disclosures and reporting, and a culture of consent that is broadly understood and embraced by the campus community.

The main objectives include:

  • To provide a forum to discuss local, national, and global trends, issues, and initiatives as they relate to sexual violence prevention and response on post-secondary campuses;
  • To ensure that the College is in compliance with the legislative requirements outlined by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities, the Ontario Human Rights Code, and the Occupational Health & Safety Act;
  • To work collaboratively to guide and increase campus awareness efforts, initiatives, and interventions that address and prevent sexual violence;

Time commitment: Committee members are asked to commit to the following:

  • Attending 1.5-hour Full Committee membership meetings in October, November, January, and March
  • Attending one-hour monthly Working Group meetings October through April
  • Completing one to two hours of Working Group projects or tasks per month October through April

Students: the work you do as a member of the Committee on Preventing & Responding to Sexual Violence can be added to your Co-Curricular Record (CCR).

What is a CCR? A CCR is a formal document that showcases skill development that has taken place outside of the classroom. It’s a great way to highlight your on-campus involvement and the skills you have acquired along the way.

How to apply: Please complete the online application form.

Please note: The first meeting of the Committee on Preventing & Responding to Sexual Violence has been scheduled for October 6, 2021, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. via Microsoft Teams. An email will be sent mid-September confirming membership on the Committee.

Subsequent meetings are scheduled for November 24, 2021, January 26, 2022, and March 30, 2022 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
