Enhancing Institutional EDI Knowledge of Disability and Academic Accessibility:

  • Students requesting extensions as a disability-related accommodation are provided extension guidelines from Accessible Learning Services.

  • There may, on occasion, be exceptions to these guidelines for specific disability-related reasons (for example, when a disability-related reason prevented the student from engaging in the accommodation process).

  • With increased efforts to embed accessibility in curriculum, applying the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) can reduce the need for extension requests. These include: breaking down large assignments into smaller components with respective due dates or implementing a “voucher” system allowing all students an opportunity or two to submit assignments late without penalty or rationale.

  • It is understood that there is value in structure, timelines and building responsibility in our students, but peer review supports pedagogical value in compassion and suggests rethinking deadline and late penalty policies.

Visit our ALS Information for Faculty website to learn more about extension accommodations.

Please email us at accessible-learning@humber.ca with suggestions for key accessibility-related topics that you would like us to address through the Communiqué.

After 30 years of outstanding service and dedication to the Humber community and its students, Cindy Panteleit, Admissions Advisor, has decided to enjoy retirement as of June 30, 2021.

Cindy’s first role at Humber was in the mailroom and she eventually moved on to hold positions such as the Switchboard Operator and Secretary in Liberal Arts and Sciences. Cindy then joined the Office of the Registrar where she worked as a Customer Service Advisor, Call Centre Advisor, and an Admissions Advisor.

In her most recent role as an Admissions Advisor, she specifically supported programs that fell under the Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellness. Cindy is known for being in the office before 7 a.m. to make sure there was a smiling face ready to greet the first student of the day. She demonstrated strong work ethic, reliability, and dependability; and has witnessed countless changes over the years, and each time she has challenged herself to adapt. Her laugh is infectious and her desire to help students succeed is commendable. If you know Cindy well enough, you heard that contagious laugh as soon as you read the sentence.

Over the course of 30 years of supporting students, it's hard to imagine the number of students that Cindy personally supported and helped along the way. Nonetheless, her commitment to Humber has been outstanding.

Cindy plans to enjoy her retirement by spending time with her family, specifically her granddaughter Charlotte. Cindy is also a huge fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and a secret admirer of John Tavares. Perhaps, we’ll have better luck next year!

We would like to express our sincere thanks to Cindy for her remarkable contributions to Humber. Cindy and her love of holiday music at the end of the year will be greatly missed in our office, but we are happy that she can enjoy this next chapter with her family.

On behalf of the Office of the Registrar and the Humber community at large, we wish Cindy all the best in retirement.

Cindy's last day of work will be Friday, June 11, and I encourage you to share your memories and warm wishes for Cindy by signing the virtual e-card.

Thank you,

Jennifer Smith
Manager, Admissions
Office of the Registrar

On Sunday, a family walking in London, Ontario was hit by driver in a premeditated act of hate. City of London police said that they believe the victims were targeted for their Islamic faith. According to a family statement they are Salman Afzaal, Madiha Salman, Yumna Salman and Afzaal’s mother. Fayez Afzaal, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

We condemn this and other acts of violence. We are angered and saddened by this news. We extend our sincerest condolences to the family and stand in solidarity and grief with all of our Muslim staff, students and community members affected by this tragic incident.

As we have said before, we are committed to fostering an environment where all members of the community feel welcome, safe and supported and recently shared this update about our ongoing Equity, Diversity and Inclusion initiatives. Diversity is one of our greatest strengths and we must continue to work to eliminate hate in all of its forms.

We understand the need and value of support during this challenging time. Below is a list of services available to staff and students.
