A graphic will appear on the MyHumber landing page from Monday, March 29 at 9 a.m. until Friday, April 9 at 5 p.m. titled ‘Summer 2021 Registration’. The URL within the graphic will drive students directly to the registration page on MyHumber and/or to the Humber Waiting Room when their registration window opens.

Humber Waiting Room

Students completing registration will move into the Humber Waiting Room and enter a queue to login to MyHumber. The Humber Waiting Room is intended to minimize the impact on Humber’s servers by managing the number of logins during each registration window. This dynamic tool will allow changes to be made quickly in response to system performance so students can complete registration without system interruptions.

Two men encouraging men to take action against harmful behaviours

At Humber, we recognize that we all have a responsibility in preventing and addressing sexual violence. Sexual violence is rooted in gender-based violence, and so men may feel that it is a "women's issue"; however, we acknowledge that men must also take action and hold one another accountable. The Survey on Individual Safety in the Postsecondary Student Population (Statistics Canada, 2019) found that men were less likely to view unwanted sexualized behaviours as harmful, twice as likely to think people are too offended by unwanted sexualized behaviours, and the perpetrators of unwanted sexualized behaviours are more often men.

The Men Seeking Change working group encourages men to reflect on behaviours that could cause harm to others and to intervene when they see these behaviours happening. We will be sharing examples of inappropriate behaviours and ways men could intervene in these behaviours over March and April as a reminder to take action and maintain our culture of respect.

Unhealthy Behaviour: Making sexual jokes.

Example: Alan (they/them) is talking to Walter (he/him) and Micah (he/him) about their love of the piano. Walter makes a comment about how Alan must be good with their hands; Alan and Micah laugh uncomfortably.

What could Micah have done differently?

Micah could have shared that he felt the comment was inappropriate. Micah could also check in with Alan later to see how they felt about the comment.

Example: Ira (he/him) receives a joke from Matthew (he/him) on a WhatsApp group chat. The joke has a sexual image and derogatory comments about a woman. Aida (she/her) says she’s offended by the joke and asks Matthew to apologize. Ira says Aida is overreacting.

What could Ira have done differently?

Ira could have reaffirmed Aida’s feelings, and encouraged Matthew to apologize.

The team at T+L Creative has been working hard to roll out new and exciting video tools for Humber faculty. In January, we announced that PowToon licenses were available for faculty use. Due to popular demand, those licenses were quickly swooped up.

We’ve topped up our licenses and are pleased to announce that PowToon is once again available for faculty sign-out.

Who can sign out Powtoon? Powtoon licenses are available for all faculty to be signed out for project purposes, or for faculty who are looking to develop their digital fluency. The length of the sign-out will be dependent on your particular use case, in order to ensure that licences are available for those who need it.

How do I register? Visit our Powtoon article on the T+L Creative microsite for more information, or fill out our registration form directly.

What is PowToon?

PowToon is a simple, powerful tool which can be used to create short, character-driven animations with a few clicks of your mouse. But that's not all. This versatile software can animate your already-existing PowerPoints, and assist you in adding voiceover and music. It can also record your screen, which can be quickly added to your Powtoon video. PowToon truly is the Swiss Army knife in the video toolkit.

Thank you for your ongoing commitment and leadership during these challenging times.

We continue to be proud of the way the University of Guelph-Humber (UGH) community has come together to support our students and each other.

We know that you are receiving many questions from students about plans for fall semester program delivery and on-campus services and operations.

UGH is working with both the University of Guelph and Humber College as it develops its fall program delivery plans. We are anticipating more teaching and student life activity on campus as of September, but the nature of course delivery and activities is still being determined. We are monitoring how the vaccine rollout is proceeding as well as changes to government and public health guidelines that would affect current physical distancing or class size cap requirements.

While UGH faculty and staff begin to prepare this spring for Fall 2021 program delivery, we are moving forward with the recruitment of a new Vice-Provost to lead the University of Guelph-Humber. We had originally hoped to start recruiting for this critical role last fall and are pleased we are now able to begin this process.

We expect recruitment to start in June after U of G’s names its new Provost and they begin in the role. George Bragues has graciously agreed to continue to act as Guelph-Humber’s interim Vice-Provost until end of the year. We thank George for his efforts and commitment during the past year.

We have also started recruiting a new Head of Finance and Administration. Brenda Whiteside will continue as interim Director of Administration and Student Services until the end of June and support the transition of this new hire.

We have accomplished so much togetherduring the past year and supported our students in many different ways. We will keep you updated on plans for Fall 2021 and on these recruitment activities during the coming months.

Warm regards,

Charlotte Yates

After more than 10 years managing both the Office of the President and the Humber Board of Governors, Deborah Green will be retiring in September 2021. After a successful career as an executive assistant to CEOs in many sectors, Deborah came to Humber in 2009 as EA to the VP Administration & CFO. One year later, she was asked to become the executive assistant to President John Davies. Deborah has worked with me since 2012, becoming Director of the Office of the President and the Board of Governors in 2016.

Deborah’s high standards, dedication and professionalism established her as a role model and mentor to many. Her positive and friendly demeanour contributed to a supportive and collaborative work environment reflective of Humber’s values.

Please join me in congratulating Deborah and wishing her well as she leaves to spend more time with family and friends.

The Director of the Office of the President position will be posted in the coming days.
