Humber’s Elections Guidelines and Materials from Elections Canada
The Ontario election has officially begun. Please familiarize yourself with Humber’s Elections Guidelines and let us know if you would like to access Elections Canada’s voting awareness assets.
Ontario is now in an election period. Please familiarize yourself with Humber’s Elections Guidelines which outline the terms of political engagement between now and June 2nd (Election Day). These guidelines also detail the actions the college takes to ensure our faculty and staff have the resources and support they need during this period, including situations where candidates are looking to recruit volunteers or distribute literature to students, faculty and/or staff.
As a reminder, any requests for an on-campus or virtual engagement with a candidate during the election period should be brought to the attention of Kelly Jackson, the Vice-President of External Affairs and Professional Learning (Kelly.jackson@humber.ca) prior to organizing any event or engagement with students, staff or faculty.
Also, GRMC has obtained digital assets from Elections Canada designed to promote voting awareness among young people during the election period. These assets have specifically been designed with post-secondary institutions in mind. In addition to the digital assets, we received a limited amount of postcards and posters which are currently at North Campus. If you’re interesting in accessing Elections Canada digital assets and/or postcards and posters, please reach out to Bethany Sharpe (Bethany.sharpe@humber.ca).
Please note that this information was revised on May 4, 2022.
The need to take time for ourselves and our family is an important part of a healthy work-life balance. We encourage all staff to schedule and plan their yearly vacation entitlement in consultation with their manager.

SUMMER HOURS, EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION DAY AND STATUTORY HOLIDAYS
Summer Hours
During the period from May to August, where operationally feasible, management has the authority and discretion to establish summer working hours for their employees. These hours may vary from regular operating hours.
Summer hours usually mean that employees continue to work their full number of hours each week but may start and finish earlier or later in the day. When considering requests for summer hours, managers are encouraged to engage in conversation with their employees to discuss feasible options while ensuring regular customer service is maintained.
Should there be any questions regarding the scheduling and/or taking of vacation, or the observance of holidays, please contact your HR Business Partner.
Summer Early Closings
Early closing days is a perk that allows staff to get away a bit early on the Friday of long weekends during the summer period. Although we encourage this to continue for 2022 wherever operationally feasible, we recognize with most employees working remotely and the range of public health measures that may limit travel, this benefit may not have the same value as it has in the past.
Managers are encouraged to support early Friday closing for statutory holidays that fall on a Monday, as listed below. Staff who are scheduled to work on the Friday before the holiday Monday, should be encouraged to finish work one and a half hours (1.5) early the Friday before the long weekend, from the end of their regular workday.
Subject to the operational requirements of the division/department, early closures for 2022 apply to the following:
- Friday, May 20 (prior to Victoria Day)
- Thursday, June 30 (prior to Canada Day)
- Friday, July 29 (prior to the Civic Holiday)
Staff who are required to work full hours on any of the early closing days shall be given one and a half hours (1.5) off on another day during the summer, to be scheduled by their manager.

|
Labour Day |
Monday, September 5 |
|

Note: The December /January Holiday Closure details to be sent in a separate memo and closer to the date
Statutory Holiday Pay
Staff required to work on a statutory holiday shall be entitled to paid time and one-half for each hour worked, plus holiday pay or equivalent time off in lieu. Refer to the applicable collective agreement or admin staff policy for further details on eligibility and qualifying rules for statutory holiday pay.
Part-time staff may be eligible for holiday pay, plus time and one half pay, for hours worked on any statutory holiday. To qualify for statutory holiday pay, part-time employees must have worked on their scheduled day of work preceding and following the recognized holiday.
Payments made to all part-time staff shall be equal to the total amount of regular wages and vacation pay payable to the employee in the pay prior to the statutory holiday, divided by the number of days worked in the prior pay period.

PTTC is brought to you by the Humber-Seneca Polytechnic Partnership (HSPP)
HSPP promotes co-operation and collaboration between Humber and Seneca, while enhancing and expanding learning opportunities for students at both institutions—as they begin, continue, or complete their postsecondary education.
HSPP diploma-to-degree pathways provide students at both institutions the opportunity to build on their credentials, without losing credits or delaying graduation.
The partnership includes joint efforts to develop programs and curricula, enhance student services, and share operational costs.
HSPP leverages the respective expertise of each institution for the benefit of all students. Combining strengths through the HSPP, Humber and Seneca provide learners with broader options and greater access to the world-class polytechnic education that will prepare them for their careers.
On behalf of the Humber Fashion Show graduating students, we would like to thank Antonietta Perretta, Rosa Marchese, David Scott, Lauren Cheong , Janice Boyd, Katie Evans, Peter Weinzettl, Alvina Cassiani, Bruce Sinclair, Louise Hoshiba and Jessica Estrella for their support in the event.
To all faculty and academic partners,
As we shared in April, Testing Services is introducing an enhanced service delivery model to ensure we are meeting the needs of learners, faculty and academic partners, and institutional priorities.
Scheduling Tests
All seats within the Testing Services are booked through an appointment-based process. Effective for the summer 2022 semester, all scheduling of tests is conducted through an LMS integration within Humber’s Blackboard system and Guelph-Humber’s CourseLink system. This new integration will create a seamless process for all faculty and learners, ensuring the correct exams are scheduled for learners within the correct courses.
For learners to schedule a test in the Test Centres, faculty must first make the test available through the new integration. This is done in two easy steps, one of which you should activate at the beginning of summer 2022. These steps are detailed in the attached slide deck.
- Adding the Testing Services integration to your course content – beginning of summer 2022
- Providing the test details and the test document – two weeks prior to the test date
Once you have made the test available in the Testing Services system, learners are able to book their test via the system.
This new methodology provides learners with confidence in securing their writing dates and times and eliminates line-ups and crowds at our locations. This approach also ensures that specialized accommodations requiring limited resources (e.g., individual testing rooms, large spaces to enable a reader/scribe, specialized adaptive software programs not available on all devices) are able to be offered as required to meet our shared duty to accommodate.
Please remember learners are not required to activate their accommodations for all tests. Faculty will only need to submit tests to Testing Services if a learner has indicated to their faculty they wish to write in Testing Services spaces by communicating directly with you. A test cannot be booked in the Test Centre by a learner without faculty submitting the test first. Please know that learners will be able to complete their tests/assessments within two weeks of the scheduled in-class date to enable access to resources within Testing Services.
We will continue to seek feedback from faculty, staff, and learners throughout the summer for further improvements launching in fall 2022, including training for all faculty.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support of all learners. We wish you all the best for the rest of this semester.

On Tuesday, May 3rd, flags at our campuses will be lowered to half-mast in memory of Hasibul (Hasib) Alam. Hasib was in the Hospitality – Hotel and Restaurant Operations Management program in the Faculty of Business. He passed away on April 2nd.
The Humber community is deeply saddened by Hasib’s sudden and untimely death. The College has been in contact with Hasib’s family to express our condolences, and will continue to provide support to faculty, staff and students who knew him. As Hasib was in his final term of his program, Humber will present his family with his credential, awarded posthumously. It is clear from communications with family, peers, and faculty, that Hasib was a dedicated learner and bright light for those who knew him.
