The Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning and the University of Guelph-Humber (hereafter referred to as “Humber” or “the College”) is committed to advancing Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) for all members of the College community.

Did you know that Humber has an EDI Committee and an EDI Taskforce?

The Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Diversity would like to take this opportunity to provide an overview of the EDI Committee and EDI Taskforce:

EDI Committee

EDI Taskforce

Mandate

The EDI Committee promotes leadership, innovation, collaboration and information sharing on all matters relating to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and the Employment Equity program within the College.

The EDI Committee was established in the 1990’s by the College with responsibility shared jointly by representatives of the Union Locals and the College to act as a consultative body on the development and implementation of an Employment Equity Program.

The EDI Committee has 2 Co-Chairs.

The EDI Committee is a permanent committee at the College.

The EDI Taskforce was established in response to the College identifying as its Strategic Priority #7 under Pillar #3, Healthy and Inclusive Community, to continue to build a diverse and inclusive community of exceptional students, faculty and staff. The specific Supporting Action is to establish and implement an institutional framework and strategy for equity, diversity and inclusion that addresses the needs of both students and employees.

Nancy Simms, Director, Human Rights, Equity & Diversity, is the Lead of the EDI Taskforce. Ian Crookshank, Dean of Students, is the Supporting Lead.

The EDI Taskforce has a temporary mandate from January 2019 to March 2023.

Membership

The EDI Committee has 13 members with representation from faculty, support staff, IGNITE, management, Human Resources and the University of Guelph-Humber.

Recruitment of faculty and support staff to participate on the EDI Committee is supported by the local Union.

The EDI Taskforce has over 60 members with representation from students, faculty, support staff, administrative employees, alumni, industry and community partners.

Humber employees were required to obtain approval from their Senior Dean or Director prior to applying to participate on the EDI Taskforce.

MS Teams Tip - Channel Your Work (but privately)

Did you know you can create a new channel in your Team, but set it Private, so only certain people can see it?

You can add a channel by clicking on the ellipsis to the right of the Team name and choose Add channel. But, did you know you can make it either a public channel or a private one?!

After you name your new channel, click in the Privacy area, and choose Private, and then Next.  Add all the people you want to have access to this channel and when finished, click Done. You will see the channel with a lock icon, indicating it is a private channel.

Only the people you added will even see the channel. It will remain hidden by everyone else in the team.

The Government of Canada continues to advise all Canadians to avoid non-essential travel outside of the country. Anyone returning to Canada is required to self-isolate for 14 days. More information is available here. Please ensure you take the 14-day isolation period into account if you are scheduled to be on campus for the Winter 2021 semester.

Please note that students who are returning from out of country may be required to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test before returning to campus. Students who live in residence will not be able to quarantine in residence. International students travelling into Canada are to complete the Travel Letter and Quarantine Plan forms.

Access to Campus – December 23 to January 4

Humber campuses will be closed as of 6:00 p.m. on December 23 and reopening on Monday January 4. This year, more than ever, consider carefully whether you or your staff must come to campus over the holidays. Employees who must access campus over the holidays for essential work only must have approval from their Senior Dean/Director who, in turn, must notify Public Safety in advance of the closure.

If it is necessary for staff to be on campus during the holidays, please do the following by 5:00 p.m. on Friday December 18th.

  • Senior Dean or Director to email publicsafety@humber.ca with the name(s) of the individual(s) scheduled to work or to be on campus during the holidays
  • Include the date(s) they will be on campus, which campus, and where on campus they are expected to be
  • Once approved, the submitter will receive a confirmation and the details will be shared with the security team
  • Those who will be on campus are to call 416-675-8500 upon their arrival and ask the security dispatcher to have a guard meet them at the required entrance.
  • Those who are scheduled to come on campus must complete the COVID self-assessment screening on the Humber Guardian app.
  • At North Campus, anyone driving to campus is to park in lot 9 and enter through the LRC main entrance.

Students will not have access to campus over the holidays.

Employee Supports and Resources

We know we are all living, studying and working in challenging times. The health and safety of students and staff is Humber’s top priority.

  • If you were on campus in the 14 days leading up to the holiday break, AND, you have tested positive for COVID-19, you think you might have COVID-19, or have been in contact with someone who has COVID-19, contact the COVID Reporting Health Team at covidreporting@humber.ca or 416-675-5007.

  • The Centre for Trades and Technology front door will be open as of January 11

Health and Safety Measures

  • All Humber employees scheduled to be on campus are required to complete the Return to Campus Agreement using DocuSign. This agreement was sent to you by email from dse@camail.docusign.net. Please sign and submit this form if you haven’t already done so.
  • You will need to complete the COVID-19 Self-Assessment Form using the free Humber Guardian app (Apple Store, Google Play Store), before attending campus each day. Take a screenshot of your screening approval in case Public Safety asks to see it.
  • Masks are mandatory inside all campus buildings. Please bring a mask with you to campus each day. If you forget, there are disposable masks available at the entryways.
  • Physical distancing is required. There are signs around campus to help remind everyone to stay six feet apart, wherever possible. Please follow all posted guidelines, including room and elevator capacities and closure notices, as well as directional signage.
  • If you feel sick, please stay home.

We hope you have a nice holiday season and look forward to beginning the Winter 2021 semester. Please continue to check the Return to Campus and Updates web pages for FAQs and more information.

Each December, the Faculty of Health Sciences & Wellness collects non-perishable food and other needed items in support of Ernestine's Women's Shelter. While the pandemic prevents us from making our usual physical donations, as you may have seen announced in last month's College Council Highlights, we are continuing the tradition through a drive for monetary donations, and wish to extend the invitation to the entire Humber College community this year.

As a global community, we are going through an unprecedented time due to the COVID-19 crisis. The Holiday season can also add to the stress and anxiety for survivors of gender-based violence. Being away from family, finding yourself in a new environment, and the financial pressures of the holidays are only a few of the reasons why this time of the year can be extremely difficult for Ernestine’s clients. Your generous donation will help ensure that Ernestine’s continues to provide support to all the women and children in the shelter and out in the community.

Since opening in Etobicoke in 1983, they have sheltered and supported over 10,000 women and children, and through their Outreach Program, also currently provide counselling services, crisis assistance, skills exchange initiatives, and a food bank for over 400 women and children across the GTA.

Please visit our Canada Helps page before January 1, 2021, to donate.

We thank you in advance for your support and generosity!

The 50 – 30 Challenge is an initiative between the Government of Canada, business and diversity organizations. The goal of the program is to challenge Canadian organizations to increase the representation and inclusion of diverse groups within their workplace, while highlighting the benefits of giving all Canadians a seat at the table.

Innovation, Science and Industry has been working with stakeholders, partners, and diversity organizations in a bottom-up approach to create the 50 – 30 Challenge. Over 500 organizations, including Humber, have signed on as early adopters. Minister Bains formally announced the initiative earlier today.

The 50 – 30 Challenge asks that organizations aspire to two goals:

  1. Gender parity ("50%") on Canadian board(s) and senior management; and
  2. Significant representation ("30%") on Canadian board(s) and senior management of other under-represented groups, including racialized persons, people living with disabilities (including invisible and episodic disabilities) and members of the LGBTQ2 community. The program and participants recognize that First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples as founding peoples of Canada are under-represented in positions of economic influence and leadership.

Humber is committed to building a diverse and inclusive community of exceptional students, faculty and staff. We have been working towards developing an EDI framework and implementation plan that will lead to concrete and measurable equity, diversity and inclusion outcomes for both students and employees. Signing on to participate in the 50-30 challenge represents an important step towards advancing diversity and inclusion on boards and in senior management.

Today’s announcement includes $33 million in funding over three years to create and access tools and resources that will help organizations advance diversity and inclusion in workplaces across Canada. Furthermore, the Standards Council of Canada, Canada’s respected standards and accreditation organization, will collaborate with the 50-30 Challenge partner organizations to develop a guidance document. The Council’s guidance document is part of a broader standardization strategy that will serve as a roadmap for organizations of various sizes and sectors across the country to achieve measurable, concrete change.

More information about the Challenge can be found here: http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/icgc.nsf/eng/07706.html

As of 10 p.m. on December 10, 2020, Banner FlexReg, the system currently used to register students in continuous and professional learning and corporate training workshops, courses and programs, will be replaced with the FlexReg Sustainment and Humber Identity solution.

  1. The FlexReg Sustainment solution is a replacement front-end (User Interface) for Banner FlexReg. As of January 1, 2021, Adobe Flash will no longer be supported. The FlexReg Sustainment solution is not reliant on Adobe Flash.

The FlexReg Sustainment solution will be used until courses are transitioned to Destiny One.

  2. A new module “Humber Identity” will allow applicants to create a new person record in Banner, or to access an existing person record after identity validation.

New step-by-step instructions for using the FlexReg Sustainment solution will be posted on the CE webpage as of December 11.

Any further questions can be directed to Julie Stewart at julie.stewart@humber.ca.
