As we continue to work and learn at home, it’s important to stay connected to our colleagues and our community. To help keep us all connected, we created the #HumberAtHome series. We want to know about how you are taking care of your well-being right now, how your teams are adding a bit of fun into your interactions, and which resources are helping you.

Here are some examples of what members of the Humber community are doing to bring their community together:

Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology

Tanya Olsen, Horticulture professor, says that getting in the garden is a great way to not only enjoy yourself but maintain the social distancing that is currently required. A little work now will pay off down the road. She suggests to start to do garden clean-ups gently. Removing too many leaves before the soil warms up means you run the risk of eliminating the pollinator eggs, which you need to fertilize your lawn, veggies and plants later.

Individual Tips from Humber Staff

Tyler Charlebois, Manager, Strategic Partnerships, participated in The Ontario Chamber of Commerce Roundtable this week with Ross Romano, Minister of Colleges and Universities. It was a great dialogue on how Ontario’s post-secondary education sector and Ontario’s business community can collaborate to support the recovery post COVID-19.

Julian Klimczyk, Multimedia Video Producer, Government Relations, Marketing, and Communications, has a new addition to his home office, a standard poodle named Mason. Welcome to Humber Mason!

Covid-19 Phishing Attacks

It is important to step up awareness of digital security during this time, as there is an increase in phishing attacks associated with COVID-19. We recommend, as far as possible, to not mix work and leisure activities on the same device and be particularly careful with any mails referencing the corona-virus. Attackers are exploiting the situation, so look out for phishing emails and scams.

  • Mail received from people you may know with requests that are unusual should be treated as suspicious. Verify these requests by phone whenever possible.

Please contact the I.T. Support Centre if you experience any issues.

Yesterday, President Whitaker issued a statement about Humber’s commitment to employees. That statement outlined that while our decisions might be shaped by different factors then they would be during normal operations, they are still rooted in our values.

Today, I wanted to share an additional piece with you. The Humber At Home pledge outlines our approach to supporting each other while we work from home and do our best to offer our critical programs, services and supports.

I encourage you to review the attached Humber At Home pledge and keep it nearby in the days and weeks ahead. Our Humber culture has always been expressed through a community that prioritizes health and well-being as well as equity, diversity and inclusion. It is important to remember that no two of us are experiencing this situation in the same way. The challenges we may face and the support we may need can vary dramatically. However, what should remain the same is our pledge to one another, which includes:

  • Be respectful of individual circumstances and supportive of colleagues
  • Prioritize our own health and wellness
  • Be thoughtful about how we conduct meetings and use technology
  • Be dedicated to opening the lines of communication
  • Adjust our expectations and respect boundaries

I am exceedingly proud of the staff at Humber who have risen to the challenge over the last eight weeks, even when it hasn’t always been easy.

We are all in this together. Take care of yourselves and each other.

Vice-President, Human Resources and Organizational Effectiveness

In light of the evolving COVID-19 situation, JIPE is extending its deadline for expressions of interest in a Special Issue of the Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Education, on the topic of “Innovation in Micro-Certification.” Authors (and co-authors!) are invited to submit a 250 to 500 word expression of interest, proposing their paper.

Contributions could take the form of empirical papers, review papers, brief reports, or case studies, and are expected to link to existing literature on the topic. Potential topics include design, development, and implementation approaches to micro-certification, or impacts of micro-certification initiatives, focused on linking learning and skill development to workplace needs. Papers may include success stories, practice transformations, evidence of curriculum shifts to accommodate new needs, or examples of industry partnering with polytechnics to address their own operational needs for talent or innovation.

Expressions of interest should be submitted to heidi.marsh@humber.ca by May 20, 2020.

Successful proposals will be notified by May 31, 2020. Complete papers will be due by August 20, 2020.

Pen and Ink!

Our lives are filled with emails. Take a step back and put pen to paper and write one letter a day for seven days. The mail is still running, and if you don’t want to use that service, consider writing letters to people within walking distance so you can leave it on their doorstep

We are encouraging you to be part of the Principal's 7 in 7 Challenge!

To help our community deal with the stress of the COVID-19 pandemic, Principal Derek Stockley has put together a challenge. The following is a list of seven challenges that span seven days each. Consider picking one to try, or for those that are adventurous, try them all at once! These activities are meant to foster community and connection while engaging in acts of gratitude and kindness that research has shown can impact your wellbeing.

Visit the website to learn more.

While you engage in the challenge don't forget to tag us on social media @humberlakeshore and #Humberathome.

Humber has decided to cancel all Humber-sanctioned international travel for students, in all countries between now and September 1, 2020.

We will work with students to address the financial and academic impacts of these cancellations. Students who were scheduled to participate in these activities should contact their study abroad coordinator or program coordinator to discuss next steps. Similarly, employees who were scheduled to travel as part of any of these student trips should discuss next steps with their manager.

  1. Conflict Coaching
  2. Tips and Strategies on Conflict De-escalation Techniques
  3. Facilitated Mediations

Community Members can e-mail northdrc@ignitestudentlife.com. Trained alternative dispute resolution (ADR) students, advisors and mediators from within the community will be available by appointment to provide dispute resolution support services.
