The Centre for Creative Business Innovation has partnered with the City of Toronto to re-envision the miniature model of the city called Tiny Town located in Toronto's City Hall. A team of interns are gathering user information to help them better understand how the model can function for different user groups and what should be included in their design process.

Recently, we celebrated incredible achievements by our graduating students at the annual ACIDO Rocket Show 2021 Design Competition. Humber students took home five awards, including First and Second place in the 2021 Rocket category. This is a tremendous accomplishment from our students among the elite design schools within Ontario.

Each year, the Association of Chartered Industrial Designers of Ontario (ACIDO) hosts “Rocket” – a design competition for Ontario’s graduating industrial designers. Graduates nominated at the top of their class from Carleton University, Humber College, OCAD University, and Sheridan College have the opportunity to pitch their final year thesis projects to a jury of select industry professionals with the top winners announced at the Rocket Awards Ceremony. This year, ACIDO moved the competition online to continue providing Ontario’s top graduates with the means to display their final year thesis projects and a chance to win awards and prizes. Through the ACIDO awards, student participants and award recipients received industry recognition for their work.

The 2021 Rocket awards are given to the student projects that represent the best in show.

The winners impressed the design jury through their design process including project definition, design research, concept development, implementation, final prototype, graphic presentation, and verbal pitches. These awards are sponsored and supported by Onshape, a PTC Business; Eventscape; CAD MicroSoultions Inc.; Forest City Casting, and Cortex Design Inc.

Congratulations to our Humber student winners:

About the Senior Level Thesis Projects and Virtual Thesis Show 2021

The Senior Level Thesis is the culmination of the Industrial Design student’s career here at Humber. It is the result of continuous development over the course of the academic year leading to this capstone project. The Senior Level Thesis projects encompass four essential criteria (four pillars) of human-centric design approach and the understanding of full-bodied, three-dimensional physical interaction of user, product and environment. The projects generate innovative solutions using research-driven, evidence-based designs which focus on the user experience.

The Senior Level Thesis projects are supervised by Professor Catherine Chong, and Professor Sandro Zaccolo, with Teaching Support Assistant, Reece Bennett. This year, our graduating students prevailed over the challenges and successfully completed their Thesis capstone projects despite the additional hardship of working under severe restrictions. They learned new skills and techniques. Ultimately, they re-imagined new ways of working, innovation came from thinking inside a literal “box”. On May 27, 2021, we celebrated their accomplishments at the graduate Virtual Thesis Show titled INSIDE THE BOX. This show represents the culmination of four years of dedication and commitment to design excellence, with recognitions and validations from design industry professionals.

Enhancing Institutional EDI Knowledge of Disability and Academic Accessibility:

  • Students requesting extensions as a disability-related accommodation are provided extension guidelines from Accessible Learning Services.

  • There may, on occasion, be exceptions to these guidelines for specific disability-related reasons (for example, when a disability-related reason prevented the student from engaging in the accommodation process).

  • With increased efforts to embed accessibility in curriculum, applying the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) can reduce the need for extension requests. These include: breaking down large assignments into smaller components with respective due dates or implementing a “voucher” system allowing all students an opportunity or two to submit assignments late without penalty or rationale.

  • It is understood that there is value in structure, timelines and building responsibility in our students, but peer review supports pedagogical value in compassion and suggests rethinking deadline and late penalty policies.

Visit our ALS Information for Faculty website to learn more about extension accommodations.

Please email us at accessible-learning@humber.ca with suggestions for key accessibility-related topics that you would like us to address through the Communiqué.

After 30 years of outstanding service and dedication to the Humber community and its students, Cindy Panteleit, Admissions Advisor, has decided to enjoy retirement as of June 30, 2021.

Cindy’s first role at Humber was in the mailroom and she eventually moved on to hold positions such as the Switchboard Operator and Secretary in Liberal Arts and Sciences. Cindy then joined the Office of the Registrar where she worked as a Customer Service Advisor, Call Centre Advisor, and an Admissions Advisor.

In her most recent role as an Admissions Advisor, she specifically supported programs that fell under the Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellness. Cindy is known for being in the office before 7 a.m. to make sure there was a smiling face ready to greet the first student of the day. She demonstrated strong work ethic, reliability, and dependability; and has witnessed countless changes over the years, and each time she has challenged herself to adapt. Her laugh is infectious and her desire to help students succeed is commendable. If you know Cindy well enough, you heard that contagious laugh as soon as you read the sentence.

Over the course of 30 years of supporting students, it's hard to imagine the number of students that Cindy personally supported and helped along the way. Nonetheless, her commitment to Humber has been outstanding.

Cindy plans to enjoy her retirement by spending time with her family, specifically her granddaughter Charlotte. Cindy is also a huge fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and a secret admirer of John Tavares. Perhaps, we’ll have better luck next year!

We would like to express our sincere thanks to Cindy for her remarkable contributions to Humber. Cindy and her love of holiday music at the end of the year will be greatly missed in our office, but we are happy that she can enjoy this next chapter with her family.

On behalf of the Office of the Registrar and the Humber community at large, we wish Cindy all the best in retirement.

Cindy's last day of work will be Friday, June 11, and I encourage you to share your memories and warm wishes for Cindy by signing the virtual e-card.

Thank you,

Jennifer Smith
