As education professionals, we know that higher education is a key pathway to social mobility and that the participation of underrepresented and historically disadvantaged students decreases at multiple points across the higher education pipeline, including at application, admission, enrolment and graduation.

Recognizing the importance of analyzing these links further, Humber began collecting race-based data through the Humber Student Success Survey (HSSS) in 2016. The college analyzes the relationship between race and student success to understand issues related to systemic racism and to better support underrepresented and historically disadvantaged groups.

To learn more about this topic, check out this new one page brief. For more information on the diversity data Humber collects, click here or contact Silvana Miller.

This publication is the latest in IPA’s Insights series which supports institutional data literacy and the establishment of a common understanding about important institutional issues and topics related to Humber’s strategic priorities.

Installing Piles for the new Humber College Stop along Hwy 27, Finch Ave. W. and Humber College Blvd.

The week of November 16, 2020, as part of the Finch West Light Rail (LRT) project, several crews will start support of excavation works for the future Humber College Stop, open cut tunnel and portal. Using auger machines, crews will drill holes into the ground and fill them with concrete and steel piles to create “columns” that will support excavation works as well as surrounding utilities or structures.

Pile drilling will be conducted along Finch Ave. W. between Hwy. 27 and Westmore Dr. and along Hwy 27 to south of Humber College Blvd. Dry utility (e.g. electric, telephone, TV or internet cables) work also will be underway on Finch Ave. W. in the same area.

Noise and vibration levels will be monitored throughout the work to make sure they are always within permitted ranges.

During pile drilling, for public and workers’ safety, traffic will be shifted on Hwy 27 to the east side, starting  the week of November 16, 2020 and to the north side on Finch Ave. W at the end of November 2020. On Humber College Blvd, traffic will be shifted to the south. Those traffic shifts will remain in place till summer 2021.

Hello Humber. Earlier this month, we began interacting with the Humber community about health and well-being and we want you to join in the fun.

Last week, several Employee News Network (ENN) videos were shared with information on the College’s flu clinics, as well as on Humber’s commitment to health and wellness on campus and at home.

In the coming weeks, Communiqué and ENN will include content aimed at helping support a healthy work environment for all staff, whether you’re at home, on campus, or anywhere else. This may include tips, resources and other helpful information.

Through the Student Success and Engagement team, students will also learn about all that Humber offers to support a healthy lifestyle. Engaging social media activities and videos will highlight what students can do to prioritize health and seek help when they need it.

Next week, we’re going to share more about how you can be involved in showing how you practice wellness and what wellness means to you. If you’d like to get a head start and want to share what you are doing to be healthy, please send your stories, anecdotes, photos and videos to publicrelations@humber.ca.

Stay safe and be well.

Beginning November 16, Humber will be reopening fitness centres with some revised health and safety measures.

As Humber continues to limit the number of people on campus to only what is necessary, students who have a course on campus may use the fitness centre for their scheduled workout only on the day(s) they are on campus for academic purposes. The fitness centres will continue to be open to students living in residence on campus.

Humber staff who are working regularly on campus as part of their Faculty or department’s return to campus plan continue to have access.

All patrons using the facility must adhere to the new social distancing rule of three metres (nine feet).
