The Center for Teaching and Learning is looking for a few exceptional faculty, with three or more years of teaching experience to help facilitate Geneva Park, Humber’s three-day orientation retreat for newly hired, full-time faculty.

Faculty who are interested in becoming a Geneva Park facilitator must be full-time faculty who are skilled educators interested in supporting teaching excellence, helping to create a community of belonging for new faculty, collaborating across disciplines as well as having exceptional organizational skills.

It is with mixed emotions that I announce that Tracy Fattore, Associate Vice President, Legal and Risk Management has accepted the role of Chief Risk Officer with the Governing Council of The Salvation Army of Canada and Bermuda. We are saddened to see Tracy leave, but excited for this new opportunity in her career, as we will certainly miss her passion, tireless commitment and dedication to Humber.

Since Tracy joined the College in 2013, she has been a valuable and well-respected resource in advising the Executive team, including in her role as Co-chair of the Executive Advisory Council. Tracy envisioned and managed great change throughout the College by successfully creating and expanding the Legal and Risk Management department, which reviewed more than 670 contracts in 2018 in addition to managing other legal, risk, privacy, policy, and insurance matters.

Among Tracy’s many contributions to the College, she championed the development and implementation of the Integrated Risk Management Framework, Business Continuity and Emergency Response Planning and the Policy and Procedures Framework, for which Tracy led the creation and deployment of the College’s Anti-Spam Legislation and Signing Authority policies.

Tracy also supported the College in her role as Chief Privacy Officer, which included responding to Freedom of Information requests, developing and implementing privacy practices, incident reporting processes, and the development of a College-wide Record Retention Schedule.

The College will continue to benefit from the hard work and contributions made by Tracy for years to come. Tracy’s last day will be Friday, April 5, 2019. We will be hosting a formal farewell for Tracy. Details to follow.

Education & Training Solutions is excited to be growing and we are working hard in anticipation of the launch of our new Real Estate Education Program (REEP). The ETS portfolio also includes Corporate Training, Associations and Professional Programs, Credential Testing and Transportation Training. With a renewed focus on revenue diversification, we are seeking more opportunities to surpass the already anticipated annual revenue of $49 million that we deliver today. To support our lines of business, I am very excited to announce the newest members of the ETS team:

Miguel Lameiro as the Associate Dean, Program Delivery ETS. Miguel brings a wealth of experience from both the business and the post-secondary education sectors. His previous roles include Adjunct Professor as well as Chair, Built Environment School of Civil Engineering Technology and Chair, School of International Business and Management for Seneca College. He also has start-up experience including launching a Pan-African MBA program for the African Leadership University ALU. Miguel graduated with a MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business, Western University as well with a Master of Education from University of Toronto.

Nadia Desjardins as the Associate Dean, Corporate Training Solutions (ETS), Nadia comes to us with 15+ years progressive experience in the learning and development field working with global corporate customers conducting in depth needs assessments, program design, curriculum development, facilitation, selection of trainers, and program evaluation. Nadia is no stranger to Humber’s corporate training portfolio as she was the Manager of Association Programs & Customized Training from 2004 to 2010. She has also held positions such as Supervisor of the Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board’s International Education Program, Recruitment Officer – Latin America for St. Clair College and National Account Director of Business Development for the Canadian Management Centre. She also comes to us with a Bachelor of Art and Applied Sciences in Psychology & Asian Studies from the University of Windsor as well certificates in project management and leadership.

Alex Ferguson as the Account Manager for Corporate Training Solutions. Alex comes with extensive experience in providing blended learning solutions to national and global organizations. Alex has more than 16 years’ experience in learning business development roles including four years directing the Learning and Business Development subsidiary of Bell Aliant. He also played a key role in employee development content management with Global Knowledge, a leading global training organization. Alex will be a great compliment to our team by bringing his strong background in eLearning, LMS technologies, and leadership experience in developing new revenue streams.

Angeline Brown as the Manager, Administrative and Client Support, Corporate Training Solutions (secondment). Angela comes to ETS from her role as Coordinator of Humber’s Advising and Academic Support Department. In her role as Student Support Advisor & Instructor she provided instructor and learning support for Humber’s Centre of Teaching and Learning. Angeline graduated from York University with a Bachelor of Arts double major Honours Degree in Law & Society and Sociology as well as earned a Bachelor of Education Degree. Angeline is now working on a York University Master of Education which she will receive in August 2019.

Paula MacDougall as the Manager Operations, Real Estate Education Program and Education and Training Solutions (ETS) as of October 1, 2018. Paula is not new to the ETS portfolio as she has been working on the RECO project since April 2017 as an Operations Subject Matter Expert. Prior to this role, Paula served as the Administrative Coordinator for Education and Training Solutions between 2014 and 2017. Paula also worked as a Project Assistant during the implementation of Humber’s Banner Student Information System in 2013/14.  Paula has a Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree from York University. Prior to joining Humber, Paula enjoyed a career as a top-level inventory and allocations manager in the Canadian retail sector for two divisions of a multi-million dollar company.

Seon-Mi Im as the Senior Systems Analyst ETS. Seon-Mi comes to us with progressive experience in data analysis, designing reporting and providing IT driven solutions. She has worked areas including the Financial Services, Loyalty, Marketing, Advertising and post-secondary sectors. Seon-Mi has held roles such as an e-commerce analyst, senior web developer, web application developer and senior applications developer. For the past year, Seon-Mi has worked extensively for ETS on the development of Real Estate Education Program and supported the process for the Ontario Building Code examinations for the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing. Seon-Mi has a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology from University of Toronto and Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Information Technology.

Nancey Adamson as the HR Manager for Educational Training Solutions. Nancey comes to us from HR Department to support HR functions and the management of all HR activities required for ETS current operations as well as the new ventures that ETS will be exploring. Nancey is respected leader with proven expertise in designing, implementing, managing talent management and employee engagement programs for faculty, support and administrative staff. Nancey has a PhD in Higher Education from University of Toronto (OISE), a Master of Arts from the University of Central Michigan, a Bachelor of Education in Adult Education from Brock University as well as Postgraduate Certificate in Human Resources from Humber College.

Emma Phan as the HR Contract Administrator ETS and will report to Nancey Adamson. Emma comes to ETS from her role as HR Coordinator in Humber’s Human Resources Department. Emma is a Humber alumni and graduated from Humber’s Bachelor of Commerce – Human Resources Management as well as Humber’s Business Administration Advanced Diploma. When Emma was a student, she also worked a peer tutor, research assistant and support staff in the Math Centre, as an international ambassador and recruitment assistant in our International Centre as well she also worked as a Learning Community Facilitator for Student Life.

FIRST Robotics Canada District Competition If the Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology could pick an event that emulates its vision to inspire youth and young adults in the area of STEM, it would have to be the 2019 FIRST Robotics Canada District Competition games held this past weekend (March 8-10) at Humber College.

From the opening ceremonies to the spirited second half of the games, the whole event had a palpable energy and passion, which extended beyond the Humber gym, seeming to exude from every member of the FIRST Robotics organization.

Approximately 1,000 Ontario high school students benefited from exemplary coordination and event planning by the Community Outreach and Workforce Development, and our faculty of Applied Science and Technology at Humber College. The Award winners and Robot Team Winners can be found here.

In addition to hosting the First Robotics Canada District Competition and in keeping with Humber’s commitment to developing strong community partnerships, the College also had the opportunity to sponsor two teams for this year’s events. One of whom were the NACI Robotics team who expressed their gratitude by acknowledging the generous financial support of Humber and FAST and recognizing the positive impact of STEM in the regional culture of Etobicoke.

FRC Director John Hobbins put it this way, “When it comes to enriching Student Learning, Humber College gets it right. Humber College provided the stage for students to work alongside expert industry mentors…..providing evidence of the significant benefits of stakeholder investment in high school students and their journey of enriched learning and exposure to career pathways.”

It pleases me to see this partnership develop from our initial involvement of sponsoring a local High School robotics team to what it is today. With our vast number of related programs in Robotics to Computer Technology, the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology is well positioned to supporting the students engaged in First Robotics in their pathway to successful and rewarding careers.

This event would not have been successful without the tireless and brilliant work of organizers Lynn VanLieshout, Community outreach manager for Humber College, FIRST Robotics Director, John Hobbins, FAST Associate Deans Shaun Ghafari (Advanced Manufacturing) and Michael Auchincloss (Skilled Trades) and the dedicated Humber faculty and all the staff who worked extensively to ensure the event ran smoothly. This is a reminder to all budget holders to monitor your open purchase orders (PO’s) as the new fiscal year approaches. Any open regular purchase orders that are $100 or more will be rolled over to the new fiscal year (2019/20) on April 1. All others are closed. In addition, budget holders should be aware that invoices received after March 31 for the rolled over PO’s will be expensed against the new fiscal budget.

Please send a request to Purchasing (purchasing@humber.ca) to close any of your open fiscal 2018/19 regular ‘reverse’ purchase orders or standing orders.

Greetings all,

Jodie Glean has accepted the position of Anti-racism and Cultural Diversity Director at the University of Toronto. Jodie’s final day at Humber is March 13, 2019. 

Jodie has worked tirelessly in advancing Humber’s AODA program and our Human Rights Pathways to Education and Action workshops for students and employees. Over the current academic year, Jodie worked closely with schools and departments on early intervention into human rights issues and conducting human rights-related investigations.

Please join me in thanking Jodie for her contributions to advancing inclusion at Humber and congratulate her on her new path.

The Exercise Science and Lifestyle Management Students will be leading "Heart Wise" exercise classes.

March 19 to April 18 (Tuesdays and Thursdays)
12:45 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
North Campus, A224

The classes will be in an interval training format and can be performed at any intensity level necessary. The students will provide participants with options and will have an understanding of the protocols for those with cardiac, metabolic, chronic diseases and other risk factors. In addition, they will be helping the participants self-monitor and adjust the intensity of their workouts, making this safe for everyone. 

These classes will be lead by a different team of students each session and are open to all Healthy Changes participants, faculty, staff, students and members of the Humber Athletic Centre.
