Please join me in congratulating Theresa Steger on her new position as St. Lawrence College’s inaugural Dean of Program Planning, Development and Renewal. While this signifies a loss for Humber, the move represents the launch of a new leader in academic quality in Ontario’s college system.

Theresa has been at Humber for almost 15 years, first as Program Coordinator of the Early Childhood Education program where she led a large team of dedicated faculty members. In 2013, she brought her knowledge and passion for curriculum development and flexible learning to our Program Planning, Development and Renewal department. In that role she worked across the college in developing new academic programs and ensuring that curriculum enhancements came about through creative strategies in partnership with faculty and academic leaders.

Most recently as Director of Digital Curriculum, Theresa has worked closely with faculty to integrate technology enhanced learning experiences to create flexible and inclusive teaching practices. She was directly involved in the design and development of curriculum aligned virtual reality learning experiences, the curation and integration of Open Educational Resources into the curriculum, and the development of industry-related micro-credentials.

On a personal note, Theresa’s support upon my arrival at Humber and her ongoing interest in academic quality assurance have led to many interesting conversations about constructive alignment, competency-based learning and authentic assessment, which I have enjoyed tremendously. With heartfelt thanks and congratulations, Theresa, I wish you all the best in this next chapter of your career. You will be missed!

In fall 2018, Humber became the first public college in Canada to adopt the Okanagan Charter for Health Promoting Universities and Colleges. Going smoke free on January 1, 2019 was an important step in helping us achieve our ambitious goal of becoming the healthiest campus in Canada.

Humber joins AWB Network!

Humber is pleased to announce that it has joined Academics Without Borders Network of Canadian postsecondary institutions. It is the second Canadian college/polytechnic in the network and brings the membership to 20 institutions.

AWB’s Network – Canada’s universities and colleges in support of global development – is a consortium of Canadian postsecondary institutions that support AWB’s mission to work with volunteer academics to help developing countries build the capacity of their postsecondary institutions to drive development and improve the quality of life in communities around the world.

Through its membership in the network, Humber faculty and staff will have special access to partnership opportunities provided by AWB through the organization's existing relationships with institutions and countries around the globe. Humber will also be able to propose projects to AWB in conjunction with our post-secondary partners in the developing world.

Memberhip in AWB aligns with Humber's vision to transform postsecondary education through global, polytechnic leadership, and supports our comprensive internationalization strategy.

“Humber has a long history of leadership in international development education and projects. We know from our years of experience that our ability to support these initiatives is amplified and heightened through Canadian partnerships. AWB is an ideal vehicle for us to continue our work in concert with like-minded Canadian institutions and faculty members. We look forward to engaging in the opportunities that AWB will provide our faculty members and staff,” says Andrew Ness, Dean of International.

Membership in the network will provide Humber with enhanced recognition for its international work, as well as new resources to support and coordinate this work. By building capacity at post-secondary institutions across the developing world, Humber and AWB look forward to enhancing lives and exchanging knowledge both at home and abroad.

“This is a terrific development for Academics Without Borders and for our partners in the low- and middle-income countries of the world. Acting as AWB volunteers, faculty and staff at Humber will bring the knowledge and expertise that they so critically need but that these institutions otherwise simply could not afford,” said Greg Moran, AWB’s Executive Director. “Equally importantly, Humber’s campus and its students’ learning will be enriched by the new experiences and the global perspective faculty will bring back with them to their classrooms.”

Humber faculty and staff who are interested learning more about AWB should contact:

Rebecca Fitzgerald, Associate Director, International Mobility and Partnerships at rebecca.fitzgerald@humber.ca

Beginning September 16, the School of Liberal Arts & Sciences is offering a part-time TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Certificate of Achievement that is recognized by both TESL Canada and TESL Ontario.

The part-time Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL/TESL) certificate is a postgraduate 140-hour program. The program is designed to be completed in one semester part-time; however, students have the flexibility to complete the certificate at their own pace over one, two, or three semesters.

The certificate program is a hybrid program consisting of both in-class and online courses allowing students to take classes simultaneously. Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive Humber College’s TESOL credential and be eligible to apply to TESL Canada for certification.

With an increasing number of international students in our College, TESL training is no longer just for ESL teachers. This program provides any instructor or staff member with a solid base in teaching methodology, foundations of the English language, and ways to work with and support ESL students in their classes or departments, no matter the subject area.
