Humber College – Chartwells Catering will stop serving bottled water at all catering events at North and Lakeshore campuses, effective September 4, 2018. Aligning with Humber’s commitment to sustainability on campus, we aim to raise awareness about the benefits of tap water and to decrease campus bottled water consumption. By limiting our use of bottled water, we will help reduce our collective carbon footprint and promote social and environmental responsibility. With this new standard in place, we will offer water dispensers at all of our catering events that feature traditional and infused water! Thank you for trusting us to be your source for top-quality catering at Humber College and we look forward to working together

I would like to invite the entire Humber community to join me in congratulating Steve Bellamy on his recent appointment as Chief Executive Officer for the Confederation Centre of the Arts, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

Sadly, in order for Steve to take on this exciting opportunity, it also means that he will be leaving Humber at the end of August. Steve has been a dedicated member of the Humber family for more than 11 years, and in that time he has had a profound impact as a leader within the School of Creative and Performing Arts, and across Humber in many ways and on many levels. We are very sad to see Steve leave Humber, but are thrilled for him as he embarks on this new adventure.

Steve’s last day at Humber will be August 31, at which time Dr. Andrew Scott will take on the role of Acting Dean. I want to take this opportunity to thank Andy for agreeing to take on this role during the transition phase as we work to engage the search process for the next Dean of the School of Creative and Performing Arts in the Fall.

Steve, I have truly enjoyed working with you over the last few years and will greatly miss having you as part of the Academic Leadership team. I wish you great success and enjoyment as you take this exciting role.

Sincerely,

Laurie Rancourt

Coverage for over-age student dependents

If you have an over-age dependent who is college or university-bound, you can help prepare him or her by ensuring that your child is still covered under your group insurance benefits.

Dependents over the age of 21 (but under age 25) may still be eligible for benefits coverage if they are:

  • full-time postsecondary students
  • financially dependent on you

What you need to do

  1. Advise your Compensation & Benefits Specialist by providing a Confirmation of Enrolment which confirms that your dependent qualifies as an over-age dependent. Otherwise, the dependent child’s claim will be declined.
  2. After you inform your Compensation & Benefits Specialist, whenever you submit claims, simply check “Yes” where it asks you to confirm if your dependent is a full-time student.
  3. When over-age dependents visit the dentist, they can let the dentist know that they are in school full time. This is important because most dentists submit claims electronically.
  4. You can print an extra paper drug card that your over-age dependent can present at the pharmacy. Otherwise, simply indicate “full-time student” whenever you submit a paper claim form for their drug claims. Note: If the drug card is not used for all the drug purchases, your reimbursement could be affected due to pharmacy mark-ups on the cost of the drugs. This means that you may have to pay more out-of-pocket.
  5. Keep your Compensation & Benefits Specialist informed of any change in status. Prompt notification of changes in the status of your covered dependents is very important to ensure continued coverage.

Post-secondary school needs proof of coverage

If your over-age dependent’s postsecondary school needs confirmation of your dependent’s benefits coverage, and you use Sun Life’s Plan Members Services website, you can print coverage information that your over-age dependent can give to their school. Sign in to Sun Life’s Plan Member Services website. Next, click ‘Profile’, ‘Personal Info’, and then ‘Personal and dependent information'.

Simply print the page that appears. Your over-age dependent can give it to their school and may receive a refund on their fees.

Coverage for students studying abroad

If your dependent is studying abroad (except in the United States) their benefits coverage may be extended beyond the 60 day limit under the out-of-country coverage. Please contact your Compensation & Benefits Specialist for more information and well in advance of the dependent departing Canada.

Humber Galleries is excited to welcome three new staff members to their team for the upcoming 2018/19 exhibitions launching in September!

Alize Zorlutuna joins us as our new Curator-in-residence.

Alize is an artist, poet, experimental cook, curator, intersectional feminist, committed pedagogue, and life-long learner. Working across disciplines, she investigates issues concerning identity and power, settler-colonial relationships to land, culture and colonial violence, as well as intimacy with the non-human, and technology. Her practice is informed by a critical engagement with historical narratives and their present-day impacts. Drawing on archival, as well as practice-based research, the body and its sensorial capacities are central to her approach.

She has presented her work in galleries and artist-run centers across Turtle Island, including: Plug In ICA, Doris McCarthy Gallery, InterAccess, VIVO Media Arts Centre, Satellite Gallery, Audain Art Museum, Access Gallery, and Toronto Free Gallery, as well as internationally at The New School: Parsons (NY), Mind Art core (Chicago) and Club Cultural Matienzo (Argentina). She received her MFA from Simon Fraser University and her BFA from OCAD University. Alize has curated a number of exhibitions, most notably Restless Precinct (2014), a site-specific exhibition at Guildwood Park in Scarborough, in collaboration with Radiodress. Her curatorial approach seeks to highlight voices and perspectives that storytell edges, in-betweens, and possible futures.

She has been a sessional instructor at OCAD University since 2015, where she teaches a variety of courses in both the Sculpture/Installation and Integrated Media departments.

Her work has spread across issues related to workplace safety, employment discrimination, fiscal compliance and strategic budgeting. She is devoted to connecting context and content, practice and policy, and community and organization. She is in the final stages of obtaining her Master of Arts in Cultural Heritage Management from the University of Malta. Her thesis audits and analyzes the availability and medium of pre-visit information through a disability studies perspective. In her spare time, she is an active member in artist and community spaces.

Safia Siad joins us in the newly created role of Gallery Assistant.

She is a member of MICE magazine collective and is currently producing the forthcoming online music series 'cosmic wave radio.' Her work focuses on creating space(s) for those who rarely get to witness themselves reflected in art and media.

About Humber Galleries:

The Galleries are a pair of engagement points for Humber students, faculty, community members, and neighbours: North Space (North Campus) and L Space (Lakeshore Campus). Humber’s polytechnic model is the “third way” between the university and the trade college; it blends the creation of new knowledge and the solving of real world problems. Because we are located within Humber College’s polytechnic environment, Humber Galleries is a space where contemporary art and polytechnic learning come together and influence each other. Humber’s core values of creativity, innovation, problem-solving, adaptability, and collaboration guide our mandate.

Humber Galleries is an accessible venue. For additional information, contact galleries@humber.ca, visit humbergalleries.ca, or find @humbergalleries on social media.

Humber Galleries are situated on the traditional territories of the Ojibwe Anishinabe people in Adobigok, meaning “Place of the Alders” in the Ojibwe language. This region currently encompasses several First Nation communities including families from the Otter, Turtle, and Amik (Beaver) clans.

It is with mixed emotions that I announce our Associate Dean, Vincent Shaikh, will be leaving Humber mid-August to pursue a wonderful and well-deserved opportunity as Dean of Media, Trades and Technology at Niagara College. Vincent has been a dedicated member of the Applied Technology family for five years and has had a profound impact on our school, particularly the work he did in developing our labs. It is sad to see him leave, but I am thrilled for him as he embarks on this new adventure.

Vincent's last day at Humber will be August 10. We hope you will be able to join us to thank him for his service. We are hosting a farewell drop-in on Thursday, August 9 at 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Applied Technology's boardroom NX201A. For more information, please contact Julie Pasquin at julie.pasquin@humber.ca or x5622.
