Humber ITS wants you to know that you can access the Humber H and I drives from anywhere in the world! The Office of Sustainability wants to let you know how using this feature helps decrease our collective footprint. This feature can help us all reduce printing, as well as the reduce the need for purchase, production, and disposal of portable drives (which often end up in the landfill). It also facilitates telecommuting, which mitigates an additional amount of greenhouse gas emission generation.

Simply go to myfiles.humber.ca, sign in with your MyHumber credentials and select the hard drive you to wish to access.

Thank you to Humber ITS for helping us collectively make an impact!

On behalf of the Fashion Arts and Business students, I would like to thank you for attending this year’s Walk It Out fashion show, Haute Humber. Our class worked extremely hard over the last few months trying to make this year’s show as professional as some of the biggest fashion shows around the world. Walk It Out, is an annual event for Humber and it would not be possible without the assistance of those who put in countless hours to help make this year’s show a success. All proceeds from this year’s event will be donated to our charity, Youth Without Shelter (yws.on.ca). If you were unable to attend the show you can watch it here: youtube.com/watch?v=9bUu-1FJvv4 and to view images from the production click here: humberwalkitout.ca. Once again, thank you for attending Haute Humber and supporting the Fashion Arts and Business students.

Kindest Regards,

Rizwana Saleh

It is with mixed emotions that I share Dr. Jeanine Webber will be leaving her role as Associate Dean in the School of Social and Community Services to take on a position as Dean at Lethbridge College. Jeanine has been a part of Humber for more than 12 years, first joining the school as a part-time professor in a range of our programs. She was instrumental in the launching of both the Community and Justice Services diploma, and our Bachelor of Social Sciences, Criminal Justice degree, holding the role of coordinator as each program began. In recent years, Jeanine has taken on the role of Associate Dean within our school, overseeing a vast range of programs across all credentials.

Prior to her work at Humber Jeanine held a range of positions in the area of correctional services, progressing through roles as Parole Supervisor, Case Management Officer, Program Development and Evaluation Officer and finally as the Head of Correctional Programs for the Correctional Service of Canada (Ontario). She brought this experience to her work in all of her roles in the school.

During her time here at Humber Jeanine has also achieved a number of milestones, including the awarding of her doctorate in 2010, and a range of publications and research grants, including as the Principal Investigator on a SSHRC grant focused on evaluating neighbourhood policing. Jeanine has also been the recipient of numerous awards, including the J. Bryan Riley Meritorious Service Award and the Humber Research Excellence Award. While these are all significant achievements worth celebrating, Jeanine will be missed most for her dedication and commitment to the school, our faculty and most importantly, our students.

Please join me on Friday, May 18th between 1:30 and 3:00 p.m. in L1017 to say goodbye to Jeanine. Jeanine’s last day with us will be May 25th.

Sincerely,

Derek Stockley
Dean, School of Social and Community Services

The department of Liberal Arts & Sciences offers a part-time TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Certificate of Achievement that has been taken by a number of faculty and staff members at the College. With an increasing number of international students in our colleges and universities, TESL training is no longer just for ESL teachers. This program provides any instructor or staff member with a solid base in teaching methodology, foundations of the English language, and ways to work with and support ESL students in their classes or departments, no matter the subject area.

There are five required courses in our part-time TESOL program: two in-class, two online, and a 20 hour practicum which can be completed in one of our Humber ESL classes. Each class is 30 hours in length and runs over a period of five weeks. This summer we are offering all 5 courses which would allow you to complete the program in just four months!

In-class courses run on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The courses are offered each semester, so you can complete the program at your own pace, in one, two, three or more semesters. Completing the TESOL certificate also opens the door if you ever wish to teach overseas. For those instructors without any formal teacher training, this is also a great way to enhance your resume with a teaching credential. Each course is $295.00. Below you will find more information about the classes, along with our link for registration.

  • TSOL 111: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Methodology (in-class May 14 – June 18)
  • TSOL 112: Introduction to Language (online May 14 – June 18)
  • TSOL 113: Pedagogical Grammar (in-class June 25 – July 30)
  • TSOL 114: The ESOL Classroom (online June 25 – July 30)
  • TSOL 115: Practicum (on campus May 7 – August 17)
