Beginning January 21, the School of Liberal Arts & Sciences is offering a part-time TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Certificate of Achievement that is recognized by both TESL Canada and TESL Ontario.

The part-time Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL/TESL) certificate is a postgraduate 140-hour program. The program is designed to be completed in one semester part-time; however, students have the flexibility to complete the certificate at their own pace over one, two, or three semesters.

The certificate program is a hybrid program consisting of both in-class and online courses allowing students to take classes simultaneously. Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive Humber College’s TESOL credential and be eligible to apply to TESL Canada for certification.

With an increasing number of international students in our College, TESL training is no longer just for ESL teachers. This program provides any instructor or staff member with a solid base in teaching methodology, foundations of the English language, and ways to work with and support ESL students in their classes or departments, no matter the subject area.

We are on the lookout for authentic, approachable, outgoing, and open-minded students that would make great leaders as part of the upcoming 2019-2020 Residence Life staff team. We are hiring Resident Assistants!

Resident Assistants (RAs) are upper year student leaders who live in residence and are trained in a variety of areas such as leadership, coaching, crisis management, event planning, conflict mediation, equity, diversity, and inclusion.  They provide a supportive “mentor-like” role on their floors, while working to increase school and community spirit through various community building activities. RAs work hard to develop lasting relationships with their residents, provide ongoing and individualized support, and ensure that residents benefit from their residence experience.

What's in it for students?

Aside from having a well-paid job on campus, the RAs learn a variety of skills and what it means to be a leader in residence and on campus! If that's not enough, here are some other perks for students in the role:

  • Opportunity to expand their social network (new friends, peers, colleagues, etc.)
  • Amazing resume experience
  • Certification in SafeTALK (suicide awareness training)
  • Receive a $1000 award ($500 each semester - full criteria on our website)
  • Attend a comprehensive two-week training program - this includes a one-day leadership retreat to YMCA Camp Cedar Glen and a one-day student leadership summit on campus
  • Receive Co-Curricular Record experience
  • Opportunity to submit content for, present at, and attend the annual Residence Life Conference
  • Invitation to optional team socials, both on and off-campus

If you can help spread the word about our applications, we would greatly appreciate it.

Please feel free to refer any interested students to our website where there is additional information, including our online applications. Information and applications are available here.

The deadline for students to apply is January 13, 2019 at 11:59 p.m.

To support the 2018-2023 Strategic Plan and its successful implementation, the College recently made organizational changes including the creation of two new positions in the Financial Services and Planning department.

I am happy to announce that Sanjay Gandhi has been appointed as Director, Financial Planning, responsible for budget development, forecasting, analysis, management reporting and special projects. Sanjay holds a CPA, CGA designation, began his career with Humber in 1990 and over the years has provided guidance and mentoring to schools and departments with admirable ability to communicate financial concepts at an easily understood level. In his new role, Sanjay will be working closely with the Academic division to assist with and champion Academic Plan initiatives and build upon the success of Academic Resource Planning model. Sanjay is also involved with the Colleges Ontario Finance Officers (COFO) group and currently leading the development of a grant simulation model.

I am equally pleased to announce that Kelly Morrow has been appointed as the Director, Financial Services, responsible for external reporting including financial statement audit, treasury, financial and related systems, training, accounts payable and accounts receivable. Kelly holds a CPA, CA designation and has extensive audit experience spanning public and private sectors clients. Since joining Humber in 2010, Kelly has led the Financial Services team through several business process enhancements including the implementation of Banner Finance and most recently Chrome River and Flywire systems. She continues to deliver on initiatives and holds the department to a high standard and quality of achievement. In her new role, Kelly will assume responsibility for College procurement activities, as well as support the foundation pillar of Humber’s Strategic Plan by continuously improving and optimizing administrative processes and services. Kelly also chairs COFO’s Financial Reporting Subcommittee and championed several responses to the Public Sector Accounting Board on behalf of the sector.

I would like to thank Sanjay and Kelly for their continued support over the years and wish them much success as they take on these new strategic opportunities with the College.
