Welcome back! We hope that you had a happy and relaxing summer. We're very happy to share with you the September edition of Scholars & Co., highlighting a number of research and scholarship initiatives happening within the CTL this month. Of particular note is the call for applications for the Teaching Innovation Fund. The fund is a comprehensive support package for faculty interested in conducting research on a teaching and learning question. To get a sense of the types of projects that faculty conduct, you might check out the list of current projects on page 2 of the newsletter, or hear faculty describe their projects here. The deadline for applications is Friday, September 14.

We would also like to draw your attention to Cutting Edge 3.0! This initiative is a chance to try out new educational technology with training and in-class support from the CTL, and then be a part of a research project looking at the impact of that technology with your students. This semester’s theme is “Interactive Videos: What do your videos do for you?”. If you are interested in learning more, please drop in to one of our information sessions:

Tuesday, September 11 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. North Campus, D225I
Wednesday, September 12 1 p.m. - 2 p.m. Lakeshore Campus, F103
Thursday, September 13 2 p.m. - 3 p.m. North Campus, D225I
Friday, September 14 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. Webinar - email mark.ihnat@humber.ca for more information

We hope you will consider taking part in some of these initiatives. The SoTL team is here to help – from engaging with the scholarly literature, to conducting research, to writing and presenting your findings.

We look forward to working with you!

Each year the Campus Stores at both North and Lakeshore place their course materials/textbook orders with various publishers and suppliers throughout July and early August. Our goal is to have all the required materials in the Campus Stores prior to the week of orientation.

However, this year, one of our major publishers, Pearson Education, has encountered both logistical and system ordering issues across North America. In some cases, textbooks for selected courses will not arrive at the Campus Stores until mid-September.

We suggest you contact Mary Costello, Pearson’s Regional Sales Manager, at mary.costello@pearsoned.com or by telephone at 947.986.0405, to identify any potential options (digital chapters) until your course materials arrive.

If you have questions regarding your courses please contact Indira Danraj x4987 (CMM North Campus) or Jim Killenx 3556 (CMM Lakeshore Campus).

In 2015, Humber College launched the first-ever Gender Diversity Policy within the postsecondary sector in Canada. This policy outlines Humber’s position on the responsibilities of the College, students and employees with respect to protecting gender expression and gender identity consistent with the Ontario Human Rights Code. Regular review of the policy ensures that we reflect changes to legislation and strengthens the Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Diversity's human rights early intervention and resolution processes.

The Centre is inviting community feedback on the revised Gender Diversity Policy attached to this Communique message. Please forward any suggestions or queries to humanrights@humber.ca by Friday, September 28, 2018. Thank you!
