Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber (Humber) are leaders in providing a learning, working and living environment that recognizes and values equity, diversity and inclusion in all its programs and services.

Humber proudly endorsed the Dimensions: Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Canada Charter.

Through endorsing the Dimensions Charter, Humber commits to adopting the principles throughout the College's policies, practices and culture to achieve greater equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI). This commitment reflects ongoing and productive engagement with the Humber community. The Dimensions Charter principles are:

  1. The post-secondary research community has the greatest potential to thrive when members experience equitable, inclusive and unbiased systems and practices.
  2. To advance institutional equity, diversity and inclusion, specific, measurable and sustainable actions are needed to counter systemic barriers, explicit and unconscious biases, and inequities. This includes addressing obstacles faced by, but not limited to, women, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, members of visible minority or racialized groups, and members of LGBTQ2+ communities.
  3. Institutions require qualitative and quantitative data to measure, monitor, understand and publicly report on challenges and progress made. The analysis of the data should inform a comprehensive, in-depth, intersectional understanding of the contexts, manifestations and experiences that result from inequities, underrepresentation and exclusion among all post-secondary community members.
  4. When equity, diversity and inclusion considerations and practices are integral to research participation, to the research itself, and to research training and learning environments, research excellence, innovation and creativity are heightened across all disciplines, fields of study and stages of career development.
  5. To contribute to reconciliation, research with, by or impacting Indigenous Peoples must align with the research policies and best practices identified through ongoing engagement with First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples and their organizations.
  6. Advancing equity, diversity and inclusion is a shared responsibility that requires dedicated resources and strong leadership at all levels. Senior leadership demonstrates commitment through public endorsement, by ensuring the work involved is resourced and distributed fairly, and by embedding changes in institutional governance and accountability structures.
  7. Issues of institutional and individual safety, trust, belonging, privacy and power differentials must be recognized and pro-actively addressed; this will be most successful when those impacted are directly engaged in defining the actions.
  8. Achieving the overall objective of the Dimensions program—to foster increased research excellence, innovation and creativity within the post-secondary sector across all disciplines through increased equity, diversity and inclusion—involves institutional collaboration, transparency, and the sharing of challenges, successes and promising practices.

Please join in offering warm wishes to Maggie Hobbs, who is retiring from Humber College after 40 years of service and dedication. Maggie started working at Humber in 1979 with the Student Government, managing the student pub where she increased daily revenues by 32 times over a seven-year span.

In 1985, Maggie began working for the Council of Student Affairs as Director of Operations, a role that saw her directly supporting the Student Government for 13 years. Over the next 11 years, she directed the College’s awards, alumni and orientation activities and began to establish what has become her signature of highly organized, professional, large scale events.

In 2009, and for the last 10 years, Maggie has perfected that signature supporting events in Student Success and Engagement, Planning and executing award/scholarship ceremonies, and supporting various units on campus with large scale events such as the President’s Breakfast and Convocation. During this time, she has also played an integral role in the practical experience of countless students in the Public Relations certificate program as an advisor during their fall and winter term event management projects.

Beyond the 40-plus incredible years of accomplishments, service, and commitment, Maggie is known as an honest communicator, a key contributor, a living archive of knowledge about Humber, a caring colleague, and an exceptional creator. Her attention to detail ensured that a stole was never twisted, a flower was never out of place, a speaker could be heard, a recipient received an award, and a guest was well fed. Maggie has had an incredible impact on Humber College and a countless number of staff and students who have wandered our halls.

We welcome members of the Humber community to join Maggie and her family in a celebration of her career and contributions on September 23, 2019 in the Humber Room. The reception will begin at 2:30 p.m., with remarks to follow.

It gives me great pleasure to share with our community that Rob Kilfoyle, Director of Public Safety and Emergency Management has been named Security Director of the Year for 2019 by Canadian Security magazine. Canadian Security magazine has been the leading publication for security professionals in Canada for the last 35 years.

A panel of security professionals from across the country reviewed the nation-wide submissions and determined that our own Rob Kilfoyle was this year’s winner! The submission for Rob highlighted his work ethic, his unwavering support of his staff, his dedication to the profession and his mission to create the safest space possible for students, faculty, and staff to study, work, and live. In their submission, the management team in Public Safety and Emergency Management also noted Rob’s engaging leadership style, his commitment to mentorship, loyalty, team spirit and his willingness to “walk the walk” as key factors as to why he so deserving of this award. Rob not only encouraged his staff to obtain a professional designation this past year, but he also worked towards and achieved that designation himself.

Lara Hof is leaving Humber College after eight years of work in the areas of Student Conduct, Student Support, Sexual Violence Education and Prevention, and Residence Life. Lara will be joining Mohawk College as the Associate Director, Student Rights and Responsibilities on September 23, 2019.

During her career at Humber, Lara developed a comprehensive student conduct office built on leading practice and established partnerships and collaborations both inside and outside of the institution. Lara has played an instrumental role in the creation, implementation, and revision of several Humber policies to ensure that students receive a fair process, holistic support, and connection to resources. She also established Humber’s award-winning Consent Peer Education Program, a peer-based program that offers more than 40 events and supports the direct interaction with more than 2,000 students annually. Additionally, Lara’s use of trauma-informed investigation approaches has been critical in supporting effective responses to sexual violence on campus and made her a trusted member of the Student Support and Intervention Team.

Lara is a leader who has always been known as a supportive colleague and has shown incredible dedication to Humber and the students who call Humber their academic home. She has frequently gone above and beyond to ensure that incidents are responded to and students receive the care and outcomes that are fair and, wherever possible, will best support their success. Lara’s last day at Humber will be September 20, 2019. Please join with the Student Success and Engagement Team in wishing Lara all the best on her next adventure.
