The following information is about our part-time TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) program leading to TESL Canada certification offered in the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Over the past few years faculty and staff from Math, Liberal Studies, French, English, GAS, Health Sciences, HRT and our Administration have taken the program and received TESL training qualifying for TESL Canada certification. With so many international students in our colleges and universities these days, TESL training is no longer just for ESL teachers. TESL training provides any instructor with a solid base in teaching methodology, foundations of the English language, and ways to work with and support ESL students in your classes, no matter the subject area.

There are five required courses in our part-time TESOL program: two in-class, two online and a 20 hour practicum which can be completed in one of our Humber ESL classes. Each class is 30 hours in length and runs over a period of five weeks. In-class courses run on Monday and Wednesday nights from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The courses are offered each semester, so you can complete the program at your own pace, in one, two, three or more semesters. Upon successful completion of all five courses, you can then apply to TESL Canada for certification. Being TESL certified also opens the door if you ever wish to teach overseas. For those instructors without any formal teacher training, this is also a great way to enhance your resume with a teaching credential. For Humber staff or instructors interested in the program, we will waive the $50 registration fee and cover the cost of the teaching practicum, the last course in the program. Unfortunately, as this is a non-funded CE program, the $20 tuition fee does not apply. Each course is $295.00. The link below will provide you with more information about the certificate and the individual courses.

Thank you to all who participated in the Mini Honey Harvest

The Office of Sustainability would like to thank each and every participant at our mini Honey Harvest and tea party event. We were successfully able to harvest 110 jars!

The honey was from last fall and had not been used by the bees. It was harvested from our North Campus apiaries early this summer and our beekeepers returned the wet frames for the bees to use for this year’s crop.

We unveiled our new labels featuring eight different honey bee facts to help educate us about the many virtues of honey bees.

Participants enjoyed an afternoon Fairtrade tea and desserts and many brought in their most charming tea cups. All participants went home with a mini jar of honey with a honey dipper.

Event photos can be viewed here: humber.ca/sustainability/events/mini-honey-harvest-tea-party

Thank you,

The Office of Sustainability

Welcome to the start of the 2017-2018 academic year. Over the summer, the Capital Development and Facilities Management department has been working on several large-scale campus development projects at the North Campus, along with ongoing Backfill initiatives at North and Lakeshore campuses. Work will continue through the academic year. We recognize that these necessary and innovative projects may impact the campus community throughout the year, and thank everyone for their patience and cooperation as the work is completed. Here are brief summaries of the projects.

Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation (CTI) – North Campus
The North Campus CTI facility will pioneer a new model of education focused on collaboration with the student and faculty communities Humber serves, along with our industry partners and donors. The CTI, which is being built to LEED-Platinum standards, will be a hub built on technological advances that are needed for innovation, automated manufacturing and human-centred solutions for the 21st century.

Parking Garage – North Campus
Also at the North Campus, we are completing our 1,000 space multi-deck parking structure with solar array and space for electrical vehicle charging. The garage, which will offer both retail and office space, is on schedule for completion in March 2018.

For ongoing parking information and updates, including guest parking and permit sales, please visit: humber.ca/facilities/parking-transportation

Parking Lot – Lakeshore Campus (future project)
A 350-car lot will be developed on land purchased at Birmingham Street and Eighth, with shuttles running from the lot to the main campus.

Integrated Energy Management Plan – North and Lakeshore Campuses
The IEMP is a 20-year plan designed to address Humber’s energy and water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Overall goals, to be achieved by 2034, include a reduction in energy use by 50 per cent per square foot, a reduction in water use by 50 per cent per student and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 30 per cent.

IEMP phase one involves several ongoing initiatives slated to be substantially completed by April 2018:

  • Upgrades to Building N envelope and HVAC systems (North Campus)
  • A recladding of Building E (North Campus)
  • Conversion to LED lighting with daylight and occupancy control systems (North and Lakeshore)
  • Retrofit or replacement of existing plumbing fixtures to ultra-low water consumption options (North and Lakeshore)
  • Metering infrastructure to monitor/measure energy performance of individual systems in buildings, including upgrades to existing building automation systems (North and Lakeshore)
  • Chiller plant optimization (Lakeshore)

Backfill Phase Two (Lakeshore Campus)
The Humber Backfill Project is a multi-year initiative that will reallocate and/or renovate more than 180,000 square feet left vacant following new construction at both the North and Lakeshore Campuses.

Currently in phase two, ongoing Backfill work includes classroom and lab renovation and expansion, new computer labs and new school and department office space

Renovating and retrofitting academic facilities, including classrooms and labs, are our priority so that teaching and learning will not be interrupted. Further Backfill work will continue as the academic year progresses.

For ongoing construction updates on current and upcoming projects, please go to humber.ca/facilities/capital-project-updates or follow @humbercollege on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram.

We thank you again for your patience as we work to improve our learning environment and our sustainability.

It is with mixed emotions that I share the news that Melissa Gallo, currently the Associate Director, Advising & Career Services, will be leaving Humber on September 15th to take on the role of Director, Student Success Initiatives at Mohawk College.

Melissa’s contributions to Humber during her thirteen plus years of service have been significant and include the advancement of new programs such as peer mentoring, the initial launch of a First Generation student program, and her work to advance service learning initiatives both in and out of the classroom. In her current role Melissa has significantly advanced key integrated advising objectives from advisor training to the deployment of hybrid career & academic advising. She has made important service improvements that include an online appointment booking system, enhanced referral pathways with the Academic Schools, and worked with campus partners to develop new programs such as the Transition to Work Event for students with Disabilities. We will miss Melissa’s entrepreneurial spirit, her clarity of vision as well as her team spirit.  Please join me in congratulating Melissa on her new appointment.
