It's with mixed emotions that I share news of Gail Thornton's upcoming departure from Humber, for Durham College, effective August 24th. As so many of you know, Gail has been a valued and important member of Program Planning, Development and Renewal. In her 10 years at Humber, Gail has developed many new programs including several degrees. She has worked closely with faculty, administrators and industry partners to develop curriculum, map outcomes and meet Ministry requirements. Gail has also represented Humber on many provincial college committees. While we will miss her, we also send her our very best wishes for her exciting new role as Associate Dean, Teaching, Learning and Program Quality at Durham. Please join me in congratulating Gail on her new position.

In alignment with Humber’s Internationalization Strategy, the School of Media Studies and Information Technology recently launched the Social Media Summer Program, a collaborative initiative with one of our partner institutions in Denmark, Business Academy Aarhus (BAAA). In the first program of its kind, students from BAAA joined domestic Humber students for two-weeks from July 17-28, at Humber’s Lakeshore Campus.

In this innovative course, taught by faculty from both Humber and BAAA, students discovered how to create relevant and meaningful social media content, and apply effective communication strategies across various platforms. In addition to trips to Facebook, Google and many guest speakers, students also gained a global perspective of social media from both a Canadian and Danish point of view.

Beyond the classroom, both Humber and BAAA students had a great time building meaningful relationships and expanding their international network. One Humber student participating in the course described his experience as a valuable “study abroad opportunity at home”.

For more information about this program please contact Larisa Duravetz at larisa.duravetz@humber.ca.

Ever wondered what goes on at the Humber Arboretum's Summer Nature Camp? Or have you heard all about it from your own happy camper, but wish you could have been there to see it?

This summer the fun, friendship, and learning that goes on at Nature Camp has been captured in weekly round-up videos created by Humber student Kaitlin Kealey, who recently completed her third year in the Film and Media Production degree program at Lakeshore Campus. From forest exploration and pond-dipping to traditional camp games and Art & Ecology sessions, these videos capture the joy and excitement that comes from getting kids outdoors, making discoveries.

See the full Summer Nature Camp 2017 Playlist on YouTube, which includes all of the weekly round-ups so far along with some fun with the counsellors, then stay tuned to the Humber Arboretum's Facebook Page on Friday night for this week's video!

And there are still a few spots left in the final weeks of camp. Learn more on the Humber Arboretum website at humber.ca/arboretum/learn/camps/summer-camp.html

Humber50, NEXT magazine, Humber Press, Centre for teaching and learning

As part of Humber College’s 50th anniversary celebration, NEXT magazine is looking for the “Humber 50” – from those who planted the seeds of success in 1967, to those who are guiding us today in 2017. They could be a faculty or staff member, dean or associate dean or even a group.

And we need your help to find and honour them.

Here’s how they could qualify:

  • They helped develop a groundbreaking new program at Humber
  • They helped restructure and modernize an existing program
  • They introduced new technology or teaching methods
  • They introduced and/or oversaw initiatives that have had significant positive impact on students
  • They’ve been a consistent source of inspiration and strength to students and faculty

These are some of the ways to be a part of the Humber 50. But if you know any people who’ve made important contributions to Humber’s teaching and learning environment beyond these categories, please let us know.

Send us their names, along with 1-2 sentences about why they qualify. We’d like to celebrate their efforts in the fall 2017 issue of the magazine.

You can get in touch through humberpress@humber.ca.

NEXT is a bi-annual magazine, published by Humber Press, which showcases all the teaching and learning excellence and innovation going on at Humber College.
