“Elevate Your Career at Humber” – the first career expo organized in collaboration between Humber College and the Humber River Hospital – was a great success! Humber Community Employment Services would like to sincerely thank everyone at the college who supported this event. There were over 340 candidates register for the event as a result of your referrals!

We are also happy to announce that the Hospital has already hired its first Humber Community Employment Services (CES) client as a Clerical Support Associate in its Emergency Department! In addition to the first hire, the hospital has 2 other candidates in the references stage for roles in their finance department. Tim Horton’s has also hired two individuals as a direct result of the career expo! It’s just been a few days since the conclusion of this hiring event and we are already seeing its impact on employment within the community!

The college has received overwhelmingly positive feedback about the event, and we look forward to continuing and strengthening this partnership with the Humber River Hospital. In fact, the hospital has also expressed an interest in working more closely with the School of Health Sciences at the College in order to facilitate a quick transition to employment for Humber College students who are seeking careers at the hospital and to discuss potential future specialized curriculum.

This was made possible because of the support and willingness to collaborate with the Humber Community Employment Services by the Schools, Advancement and Alumni Affairs and the Career Centre. We greatly appreciate your assistance and we want to ensure you know how important your commitment has been to the overall success of this event.

On Wednesday, July 5th Humber's Centre for Healthy Living joined Longo's at their head office for the Inside Ride Fundraiser. The Inside Ride is Canada's indoor cycling challenge that raises funds in support of children and their families living with and beyond childhood cancer. Many teams of six from various Longo's stores participated in this cycling challenge. Overall, Longo's stores raised approximately $64,000 for the Inside Ride fundraiser. Humber's Centre for Healthy Living was there to support the initiative, promote healthy lifestyle options and discuss the Healthy Living Program and student personal training with Longo's employees. Thanks to the PSOs for their support on this event.

Continuing Education with the School of Hospitality, Recreation & Tourism proudly welcomed the Delta Family Resource Centre on Wednesday, July 5th for the first day of its “Thinking Outside the Box” workshop. The main objective of this program is to give high school students who experience barriers in their lives that might prevent them from going to post-secondary education an opportunity to experience college. Continuing Education with the School of HRT aims to inform students about the different programs offered and inspire students to pursue post-secondary education.

This workshop is a series of culinary skills classes, giving students the opportunity to work with high level chefs in professional settings, while allowing them to explore unique career options. As part of the program, this group of students learns to prepare their own dough, pizza sauce and ultimately a pizza meal to enjoy. The next session with this group occurs on Wednesday, July 12.

Melanoma Prevention and the Importance of UV Protection
Being Careful About Sun Exposure Can Save Your Life

Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer, most often caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunshine or tanning beds that lead to the formation of malignant tumors.

Melanoma (sometimes called malignant melanoma) is highly curable when it is discovered early, but is much more likely than other forms of skin cancer to spread if left untreated. It begins in melanocytes, which are specialized skin cells that produce a brown pigment called melanin. These cells darken when exposed to the sun, a protective response to protect the deeper layers of the skin from the sun’s harmful effects.

RISK FACTORS

While melanoma only accounts for about one percent of all skin cancers, it accounts for the vast majority of skin cancer deaths. Risk factors include a weakened immune system, fair skin or having a large number of moles, as well as family history.

But the most common cause of melanoma is exposure to UV light. A history of sunburns, particularly during childhood, or excessive exposure to sunlight, may increase an individual’s likelihood of developing melanoma.

PREVENTION TIPS

  • Always seek the shade, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Do not allow your skin to burn.
  • Avoid tanning and UV tanning beds.
  • Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
  • Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
  • Apply sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.
  • Examine your skin from head-to-toe for moles every month.

With your Best Doctors benefits, a meticulous review of your medical case gives you an easy-to-understand report that either confirms your diagnosis and treatment or recommends a change. If you have concerns about melanoma or the effect of UV rays, Best Doctors is your one-stop shop for eliminating uncertainty and getting additional guidance on your health and wellness.
