Steve Kean has spina bifida. He is a disabled artist. For the first time in his artistic practice, he is examining how people like him who live with this condition, view themselves and seek to claim their power and beauty.

Body image remains a relevant topic in many different contexts. “Front to Back” focuses on the context of disability. Spina bifida often results in the necessity of using a wheelchair. People look down on those with spina bifida, literally and figuratively. They have historically suffered great indignity, even for the sake of medical education. Being the subject of treatment and learning is an experience many of those with spina bifida share.

“Front to Back” has been a true collaboration between Kean and those he photographs. It is a path to a sense of dignity and control over what happens to those with spina bifida. Audiences for the images in this project will see the people first. People whose lives have meaning and are beautiful.

Exhibiting this work in a public space was the final step and has given Kean and the participants whom he photographs a place and time to show spina bifida as a beautiful part of how they inhabit their bodies and shape their lives.

Special Opportunity for Faculty:

You are invited to International Development Week:  February 7-10, 2017. IDW is celebrated annually across Canada, and offers an opportunity to shed light on some of the world’s greatest development challenges.

This year we are exploring the theme ‘Developing the Worlds Youth: Innovations in Entrepreneurship and Employment’. Bring your students to our photo exhibit and to participate in a series of interactive workshops and panel discussions!

Here are three ways to participate in this special initiative:

  1. Support the development of your student learning outcomes related to Entrepreneurship by using our learning resources guide idi.humber.ca/assets/files/Photo-Exhibition-Teaching-Resource-Guide.pdf
  2. Bring your students to the Gallery Exhibit to see the developing world through the eyes of today’s youth. The images and voices - from Humber’s Sulawesi Economic Development Strategy Project and Save the Children’s Youth in Action Program - weave together stories about the challenges and opportunities in earning an income in an economy that does not offer a direct path to employment. 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. weekdays, L Space Gallery & North Space Gallery bit.ly/2jQVjXx

PREMIUM RATE CHANGES FOR GROUP INSURANCE BENEFITS

Sun Life reviews the utilization of group insurance benefits at regular intervals.  From time to time premium rates for these benefits are adjusted either upwards or downwards to reflect the level of usage, cost to provide these benefits, anticipated cost to maintain the benefits in the future and the cost of inflation.

Effective February 1, 2017 premium rates will be adjusted as itemized in the table below. These premium changes have been reviewed and approved by the Joint Insurance Committee (JIC) of OPSEU, OCASA and College Compensation and Appointments Council.

Employees may see an increase or decrease in the employee portion of the benefit premiums depending on the type of benefits they have elected.

The current employee/employer cost sharing arrangements will continue as shown below.
