Time: 7:00 p.m.
Location: Small Arms Building, 1352 Lakeshore Road

Join us for In Situ, a three-day multi-arts festival, October 27, 28 and 29, 2016 in the Small Arms Building, an abandoned WWII munitions inspection building at 1352 Lakeshore Road in Mississauga.

The Small Arms Society invites you to this event in celebration of the upcoming restoration of this large-scale urban industrial heritage building into a future creative hub. In Situ, an immersive and interactive event will animate the space and spark your imagination with music, photography, performance, dance, improv, mime, spoken word, mural and graffiti art, installation art, design and more by some of the GTA’s best emerging artists!

Working within the parameters of an experimental course - Special Topics in Contemporary Art – second year students in the Visual and Digital Arts Program at Humber College will be engaging in an extended research project on the Small Arms Facility. Assembled in collaborative teams engaging diverse research methods, student-artists will conceptualize, prepare, and execute a series of installation artworks that critically examine the history of the site. Student groups will be advised by contemporary artist Sharlene Bamboat, whose diverse practice in site-specific work will help inform creative strategies for student-lead artworks.

Welcome to a new and improved humber.ca! I am pleased to announce that thanks to massive efforts by the academic schools, the registrar’s office, recruitment, program planning, development and renewal, marketing, and led by our agency partner Black Cat, a major web update was recently launched introducing a host of new features and functions that will improve the experience of students visiting our web site. The changes to the site put us in an even better position to show prospective students why they should choose Humber.

The timing of the launch coincided with the start of a new recruitment season when our ambassadors are out promoting Humber – both domestically and internationally.

There are too many improvements to itemize but following are a few:

  • Dynamic new program pages that contain program-specific information in the top banner of every page. Tabs that include detailed admission requirements, pathway options, current availability feeds and broader choices for next steps under Contact Us and Apply Now. And new videos, images, testimonials, and galleries featuring student work.
  • Re-developed academic school sites that reflect the personality of each school while tying into the Humber brand.
  • A new ‘transfer options’ site with searchable course-to-course equivalency, articulation agreements and information about PLAR.

Development of humber.ca is an ongoing endeavour so expect more great changes to come.

Regards,

Alister Mathieson
Vice-President of Advancement & External Affairs

Anne Zbitnew, Mike Karapita and Hillary Rexe and the course design team to create “Accessible Design in Broadcast Media” – online course to launch September 2017

The School of Media Studies and Information Technology (SMSIT) at Humber College ITAL has been granted $130,900.00 from The Broadcasting Accessibility Fund to develop a course called “Accessible Design in Broadcast Media” which will launch September 2017.

The first of its kind in the world, the Broadcast Accessibility Fund (BAF) is an independent and impartial funding body that provides grants for innovative projects that will advance accessibility to broadcasting content in Canada. It has allocated funds for Anne Zbitnew, Mike Karapita and Hillary Rexe and the course design team to create “Accessible Design in Broadcast Media,” a fully inclusive online course available in both English and French.

The course will be available in the fall, 2017 for all SMSIT students. The team will also create an open source version of the course for all Canadians, including broadcast media professionals, organizations seeking accessibility training, and post-secondary institutions across the country.

This course will raise awareness of the systemic, attitudinal, physical, information and technological barriers that interrupt accessibility in current broadcast media practices. It will include content about representing and raising awareness of disability in Canada within broadcast media itself. The course will teach our students how to incorporate accessibility features such as image description and described video, alt-text, transcription and captions into broadcast media content with the understanding that accessibility should not be an afterthought but part of the initial development process. They will be educated and trained to include accessibility in every aspect of what they learn and be ready for employment with necessary skills to start work without retraining.

The team behind this application seeks to nurture a culture of learning within Humber where students become change agents in understanding and promoting the value of fully accessible broadcast content. We seek to integrate a profound understanding of the need to create accessible content so that our graduates can flourish in subsequent further study and in the global job markets of today and tomorrow.

The event is an opportunity for Humber staff with a child in grade 9 to spend a day in the workplace. It is an opportunity for students to develop an appreciation of their parents’ career roles, to understand the skills necessary to work in a variety of occupations and to consider the wide range of careers possible as they visit worksites. In addition we hope to provide a full scope of post-secondary and career options available to them. The day will consist of tours and career focused activities. Space is limited.

Please register by emailing noreen.gomes@humber.ca by Wednesday, October 26, 2016.

Culture is NOT a costume.

At Humber, we DO NOT mimic racial groups.

It's a matter of respect.
