Peer Assisted Learning Support – North to Lakeshore: We Got You

It’s that time of year again! Peer Assisted Learning Support (PALS) is excited to welcome students and faculty to the new academic year. This year we will be offering Learning Skills Workshops, Peer Tutoring and Note Taking Services (for students with accommodations) at both North and Lakeshore campuses.

Peer Tutoring services begin on Monday, September 19, 2016. The one-on-one service is designed to help students with course specific difficulties. This service is offered to all Humber College and University of Guelph-Humber students.

How does it work?

The tutoring fee is $10/8 hours. Students can begin their first session as early as Monday, September 19, 2016! We encourage faculty and staff to refer students to our office or website to book a tutor.

  • North Campus: Third Floor, Learning Resource Commons, Peer Assisted Learning Support Office
  • Lakeshore Campus: WEL 105, Student Welcome & Resource Centre

Know a student interested in becoming a tutor?

All tutors must have achieved 80% or higher in the course they are interested in tutoring and receive a recommendation from their professor.

Join the Connect Program and make a difference.

The International Student and Staff/Faculty/Admin Connect Mentoring Program is designed to enhance the experience of new international students at Humber College ITAL. We hope that this will be accomplished by creating an opportunity for faculty, staff, admin and Humber students to be part of a "Welcome Team" that will engage with new international students through informal, personalized, and friendly social interactions.

Why?

  1. To improve the social, psychological and academic performance of international students as they transition to life in Canada at Humber College ITAL.
  2. To enhance the feeling of hospitality on campus for new international students.
  3. To enhance the intercultural experience and cross-cultural knowledge of staff and faculty. Participation in this program will allow faculty, staff and admin to enrich their intercultural perspectives and communication skills while gaining a greater understanding of the goals, motivations and difficulties experienced by international students.

Who can be part of the welcome team?

The project will be open to all interested full and part-time faculty, staff and admin at Humber College ITAL. (Participation in the program is entirely voluntary.)

What is the time commitment?

  1. Attend the Mix & Mingle session.
  2. Attend at least two (2) Connect Program organized events during each term (e.g. Mix & Mingle, International Café, and Potluck and Cupcake Decorating Event, etc.)
  3. Meet with your mentee at least two (2) times outside of any Connect Program organized event during each term.

If interested, please contact Naghmeh Saffarian-Pour before September 21, 2016.

I am pleased to announce that Mark Hanna, Associate Dean, the Business School has successfully defended his dissertation “Exploring Student Entitlement at an Ontario College”, on September 14th, 2016 at the University of Toronto.

Mark’s dissertation explored the concept of student entitlement focusing on conceptualizing student entitlement from the faculty perspective and then determining the extent to which students report entitled attitudes. This study made suggestions for practice; including the way we market to students; focusing on a transition/orientation program that would specifically address the transition from customer to student: using students’ customer orientation strategically by improving services for students; and, a review of student feedback questionnaires and the process surrounding their administration.

Mark’s thesis was supervised by Peter Dietsche, Emeritus Davis Chair in Community College Leadership. I am very proud of Mark. Completing a doctorate is a tremendous accomplishment. We look forward to Mark sharing his research findings with the Humber community.

It looks like Humber’s 2016 GCC participants are off to a great start!

When your team works together, there’s no limit to what you can achieve. If your team takes at least 100,000 steps on Sept 15, 16 or 17 you'll take home the 1st Mini Challenge trophy!

Beyond this, why not plan a team walk using GCC Trailblazer, create a Team Mini League for some extra competition and motivation, and remember to keep entering your steps regularly to see your team move up the Leaderboard.

Good luck!

This is a reminder about the call for papers for the inaugural issue of the Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Education (JIPE). Authors wishing to have a manuscript considered for publication in the first issue are asked to submit their work no later than October 1, 2016. After that point, papers will be accepted on an ongoing basis, for consideration in later issues.

JIPE especially encourages contributions exploring the impact of innovative teaching and learning practices that push the boundaries of traditional approaches to learning or educational delivery. The journal publishes original empirical papers, brief reports, review papers, and occasionally book reviews.

For more information or to submit a manuscript for peer review, visit jipe.ca
