As we wrap up summer vacation and get ready for fall startup, I would like to inform you that Denise Devlin-Li has left Humber College to pursue other opportunities. I have personally thanked Denise for her dedicated service and wished her all the best in her future projects. I have also thanked Denise for her contributions to the School of Applied Technology and for ensuring that the school is well positioned for the future. I know many of you have worked closely with Denise over her nine years as the dean and also wish her the best in her future endeavours.

To ensure the School of Applied Technology continues to move forward with appropriate leadership, Nancy Sherman will be taking on the role of interim dean for the 2016-2017 academic year, effective August 23, 2016, while we search for a permanent replacement.

Nancy brings a wealth of relevant knowledge and experience to Humber that includes working at George Brown College for more than 20 years, where she led the Centre for Construction and Engineering Technologies and also served as their acting registrar and director of International. Among other credentials, Nancy holds a master’s degree in Environmental Studies from York University and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto.

On behalf of Facilities Management, the Mailroom would like to humbly request all staff members when sending interdepartmental mail within the college to kindly address the envelope with the full name of the staff including the name of the department. Many of us are using the room numbers instead of the name of the department. This delays the delivery of the envelop as the mailroom staff have to look up those names in the staff directory. Thank you.

Please read about a new research study for employees at Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber, at the North Campus. The aim of the study is to determine if urban poling (also known as Nordic walking) is a suitable workplace fitness program to address overall wellbeing of employees at the University of Guelph-Humber and Humber College. Please see the attached poster and information letter outlining details of this study.

Why Urban Poling?

There is growing research to support that urban poling results in enhanced mood, increased self-esteem and social interaction, contributing to better overall sense of well-being. What is more, walking with Urban poles increases energy levels and exercise tolerance, it is an excellent activity that motivates people to incorporate physical activity into their daily routine. Importantly this activity is easy and fun!

If you would like to learn more about this study and would like more information on how to participate please email agnes.coutinho@guelphhumber.ca

What will be asked of you?...

  • Start Date: September 2016 onwards
  • Commitment: at least 2 urban poling sessions/week for 8 weeks (at least 15 min each)
  • Complete anonymous questionnaires at start and end of study (~30 min)
  • Complete daily anonymous online survey Mon-Fri during the 8 weeks (~2 min/day)
  • Pre-scheduled group sessions or on your own, on campus during weekdays

What is in it for YOU?...
… Research shows that Urban Poling can:

  • Reduce stress, anxiety & depression
  • Improve sleep & help fight fatigue
  • Help achieve healthy weight loss/management
  • Encourage positive self-esteem & self-image
  • Promote overall health and wellness (cardiovascular/muscular/flexibility & body composition)

This project has been approved by the Humber Research Ethics Board (PR-0089). If you have any questions about your rights as a research participant, please contact Dr. Paul Griffin, REB Chair, 416.675.6622 x3226, paul.griffin@humber.ca.
