Hello Humber Staff & Faculty!

As you may already know, a few years ago we launched the First Year Experience (FYE) program here at Humber College, both at the Lakeshore and North Campuses!

An exciting new aspect of the program are the FYE Learning Communities! How it works is, students are placed in a small group that is made up of other first-year students. They will have the opportunity to attend weekly interactive sessions that are developed and facilitated by upper year Students Leaders, and will run over the course of the next 6 weeks. These sessions are tailored to meet students’ needs and interests, and have been designed to help first-years develop relevant knowledge and skills that will support their success here at Humber College!

In order to better promote the FYE Learning Communities to first-year Humber students, we were hoping to increase faculty awareness about what have to offer. If you would be willing to let an FYE representative come in and speak to your first-year class for no more than 5 minutes, please send me an email with your contact information, and the time, date, and location of your class.

Attached you will find the FYE Learning Community promotional poster and schedule, please feel free to share this with your networks!

If you would like more information about FYE and/or the FYE Learning Communities, please feel free to get in touch!

HELP is happening this week!
January 26 – February 8

What is HELP?

  • HELP is the Humber Engagement and Learning Profile survey for incoming first-semester students.
  • HELP asks incoming first-semester students in certificate, diploma and degree programs to tell us about their preparation for college, their educational and career goals, early opinions about their program and Humber generally, and to identify particular student support services they may use.

When does it happen?

  • The HELP survey is open to students during the third and fourth weeks of class (January 26 – February 8).
  • The survey is administered online and takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.

How does a student access the HELP survey?

  • Students will receive an invitation with a unique survey link through their personal email. The email subject line will read: “Humber HELP Survey Invitation – Win Prizes”.
  • Participating students are entered into a draw for great prizes, including $500 towards tuition and a Customized Career Booster valued at $500 sponsored by the Humber Students Federation (HSF).

Why is HELP important?

  • Students tell us how we can help them be successful at Humber, and receive individualized emails and timely information about Humber’s services based on areas of assistance they identified as beneficial!
  • Humber Institutional Research creates reports based on student responses to key questions and distributes these to student service areas as well as academic faculty/staff; identifies those who are struggling or at-risk of leaving early.
  • Aggregate data at the program, school and college levels will help us to develop institutional retention strategies that will help more students be successful in their program.

Where can you get HELP info?

  • To ask questions or learn more about the survey or reports please contact Pat VanHorne, Manager Institutional Research at patricia.vanhorne@humber.ca or x4943

Improving student success is an institutional priority, and benefits all of us!

The extreme cold weather conditions we have been experiencing so far this winter present a number of safety hazards, including extremely cold temperatures and potentially slippery indoor and outdoor walking surfaces caused by ice and snow.

Winter Safety Tips:

  • Check the weather conditions regularly, and give yourself extra time when travelling to arrive safely at your destination.
  • Dress warmly and stay dry. Wear proper footwear for the weather.
  • Slow down; adjust your pace to suit the walking surface.
  • Be extra careful on walkways and parking lots where there may be slippery patches.
  • When carrying objects, ensure that they do not block your view.
  • Clean your footwear thoroughly on floor mats when you come indoors.

Immediately report hazards to Security: 416-675-8500 (e.g. icy walkways/parking lots, and wet or slippery floor surfaces)

The International Centre, in collaboration with Humber Alumni and the High Commission of Canada in New Delhi, held Humber’s first India-based international alumni event this week. This is one of several international alumni events organized in recent years. In November 2013, an alumni event took place in Kaohsiung, Taiwan for graduates of the program that Humber jointly administers with National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality & Tourism. In June 2014, an alumni reunion took place in Ningbo, China, for graduates of the Business Administration program jointly administered by Humber in Canada and Ningbo and Jimei Universities in China.

In attendance at the Delhi event was Diane Simpson (Dean, International), Bill Angelakos (Associate Dean, Applied Technology), and Tania Spoljaric-Sherwood (Manager, International Recruitment and Market Development). The event was attended by graduates residing in and around Delhi, as well as their spouses, parents, and friends. Other representatives of Humber, the India-Canada Alumni Network (ICAN), and the High Commission also took part in the reception. Music was performed by four graduates of Humber’s Music Degree programs, whose careers have taken them abroad to and Delhi in recent years.
