Over the past year, close to 400 Humber students, faculty and staff have engaged in global learning experiences, and participation is growing. Humber’s Study Abroad website helps guide the Humber community through their international experience – from identifying opportunities, preparing to go, being engaged while abroad, to returning home. Resources include policies and forms; and information on cross-cultural adaptation, health and safety / risk management, budgeting and bursary assistance, consular affairs, intercultural skill development, and Humber’s new Global Citizenship Certificate program.

A new section of the website has recently been launched to promote academic exchange opportunities. Humber has a number of longstanding institutional partners around the globe, and new strategic partnerships are being developed in partnership with each of Humber’s Academic Schools.

Providing opportunities for students to earn academic credit while studying or working abroad is an important aspect of Humber’s Internationalization Strategy, 2013-2018. Applications are currently being accepted from students who are interested either Summer 2015 programs or exchange semesters in 2015-2016. The application deadline is: February 27, 2015.

“Humber College is committed to developing broadly educated, highly skilled and adaptable citizens to be successful in careers that significantly contribute to the communities they serve – locally, nationally and globally” (Humber Strategic Plan, 2013-2018)

This past summer, Humber embarked on an initiative to replace our current HR Legacy system with one that will extend far beyond payroll, personnel and contract management to a broader solution that will include time and attendance, compensation, recruitment, employee and manager self-service in addition to other enhancements.

After conducting a very competitive and detailed process, we are excited to announce Oracle-PeopleSoft Human Capital Management has been selected to be our new Human Resources Management System (HRMS). To assist with the implementation, we have partnered Deloitte.

Deloitte has over 250 higher education clients; over 20 years of PeopleSoft experience in 11 colleges and 9 universities in Canada.

SUMMER HOURS AND LEAVES OF ABSENCE

Summer Hours

  • During the period, May to August, where operationally feasible, Deans, Directors and School Heads have the authority to establish summer working hours for their employees, which vary from regular operating hours.
  • Summer hours usually mean that employees continue to work their full number of hours each week, but may start and finish earlier or later in the day.  Managers need to ensure that regular customer service is maintained when considering requests for summer hours.  Arrangements for summer working hours are approved at the discretion of the manager.

Leaves of Absence

  • In addition to any vacation time, Support Staff may request an unpaid leave of absence during the May to August summer period.  Leaves of absence may be scheduled as weeks off or as days per week off (e.g., working a four day week).  Approvals of such leaves are subject to the operational requirements of the division/department.
  • Due to changes in the pension plan, effective July 1, 2012   all unpaid leaves periods can be purchased by the employee at 100% cost to the employee . If the employee chooses to carry benefits, the cost is 100% paid by the employee.  Call Joanne Baker, HR Services, at extension 4023 for details.
  • Requests for a Summer Leave of Absence are to be submitted in writing to your manager.  If the request can be accommodated, the employee's letter and a HRIN identifying the leave of absence arrangements are to be sent to HR Services.  HR Services will confirm the salary arrangements with the manager and the employee.
  • We would like to wish all staff a pleasant vacation and enjoyable summer.  Should there be any questions regarding the scheduling, or taking of vacation, or the observance of holidays, please contact your HR Manager, Cathy Brown at extension 4158, Jennifer Cosway at extension 3325, Eloise Etcubanez at extension 4021 or Christy Lihou at extension 4225
