Premium Rate Changes for Group Insurance Benefits – Effective February 1, 2025

As many of you know, Humber Polytechnic participates in a provincial benefit program for the 24 Colleges in Ontario administered by the College Employers Council (CEC). Our participation in this plan is a legislated requirement. Each year, an analysis is done based on the usage of the benefit plan(s) and the required premiums for the next year to cover the cost of the plan in the future.

Based on that analysis effective February 1, 2025, benefit premium rates will be updated to reflect the new premium rates. The updated premium rates can be found on the Benefits section of the People(s) & Culture website, under “Benefits Entitlement and Cost” (please scroll to the bottom of the page).

For more details about your benefits coverage, please refer to the resources on the Group Benefits Program section of the People(s) & Culture website. Please note the CAAT Benefits Booklets will be updated in the coming weeks.

For questions related to your benefits coverage, please contact Sun Life by visiting the Sun Life Contact Us page or by calling 1.800.361.6212.

If you have any other questions, please contact the HR Support Centre

All Winter 2025 courses have been created in Blackboard and can now be accessed by instructors and staff that have been assigned to courses in Banner. Winter 2025 courses can be found by navigating to the courses page in Blackboard.

At this time, please consider exporting your course from the Fall 2024 term for safe keeping, and if you do, you can use OneDrive, which you can learn more about in our knowledge base. You can then import an exported course if you have one. You can also copy your current or previous course or copy individual items from your courses into your Winter 2025 course. If you'd like to merge your course sections together, please do so as soon as possible by submitting a Blackboard Administration Request.

Please note that students will gain access to their Fall courses 72 hours before the first session of each course – for example, a course that starts January 8 at 12:35 p.m. will become accessible by students at 12:35 p.m. on January 5th.

To get your Blackboard course ready for the beginning of the Winter 2025 term, these are some helpful resources for faculty and staff:

The holiday break is just around the corner. While many of us will be using the break to relax and unwind with our friends and family, the joys of the holidays can come with a unique mix of health and safety considerations. Keep these tips in mind to enjoy a safe, happy, and healthy holiday season:

  1. Be fire conscious.
    • Never leave open flames (including candles and cooking appliances) unattended.
    • Ensure smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are operational.
    • Only use lights and other electrical decorations that are in good condition. Turn off the lights when you are away or asleep.
    • Be mindful of electrical outlets; do not overload them.
  2. Drive safely.
    • Take extra care when driving in inclement weather.
    • Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle.
    • Do not use your cell phone while driving.
  3. Shovel smartly.
    • Choose dry and warm clothing when shoveling.
    • Before beginning, warm up with some stretching.
    • Pushing snow is preferrable to lifting it. If you must throw snow, do not overload the shovel, and do not twist your body; always move with your feet.
    • Take breaks and warm up indoors. Stay hydrated!
  4. Decorate wisely.
    • Safely use a ladder instead of chairs or other furniture to reach higher locations. Click here to learn more about safely using a ladder.
    • Do not place cords across walkways, doorways, under carpets, or any location that might pose a tripping hazard.
    • Avoid placing breakable decorations in areas where they may be prone to being knocked over and broken.

For more holiday safety tips, visit the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety.

On behalf of the Occupational Health & Safety Services (OHS) team, we would like to wish our entire Humber community a happy, healthy, and safe holiday season!
