Background

Humber is committed to continuous quality improvement and engaging students in this process. Beginning January 29, Humber will administer the online ‘Ontario Colleges Student Experience Survey’ (OCSES) that has replaced the previous ministry KPI Student Satisfaction survey. This survey will measure student experiences related to teaching and learning quality, program related knowledge and skills, work-integrated learning (if applicable), and student services and resources. The results of the survey will allow Humber to identify to identify strengths and areas of improvement.

Administration

All students in full-time, funded programming who began their studies in Winter 2025 and are currently enrolled in their second semester or above will receive a personal survey link on Wednesday, January 29. The survey will remain open until Wednesday, February 19 at midnight. Key messaging will be communicated to students by Humber to promote the survey and encourage completion. In order to achieve an optimal response to this survey, facilitators/instructors will be present in classes selected by the Faculties to explain the purpose of the survey to students, provide direction for survey completion and allot class time to complete the survey (approximately 10-15 minutes).

For questions about the survey, please contact Jean O’Donnell at jean.o’donnell@humber.ca.

The event will feature three unique exhibitions, projects presented by cultural institutions and a multitude of independent works by local artists.

The Independent Project program is open to all Toronto-based professional artists, collectives, and arts organizations as well as Humber Polytechnic students, faculty, alumni, and staff. All applications will be reviewed by a Selection Committee comprised of Humber Galleries staff, the Nuit Blanche Artistic Director and City of Toronto staff.

The Humber Guardian App is designed for Humber students, staff, and faculty and is managed by the Department of Public Safety. It provides quick access to campus safety and security resources, emergency contact information, safety services, and a safety toolbox. It is also used to send emergency notifications, such as campus closures, etc.

Periodically, the app is updated to include new features and information. With this in mind, it is important that the Humber community keeps the app up to date on their smartphone.

The Guardian app is available for free in Apple or Google Play stores. Those who already have the app will need to update it to have the latest information. From the Guardian’s home screen, users can click on About/Preferences > Data Update > Check for Updates.

If you would like more information please reach out to Public Safety at publicsafety@humber.ca.

In January, the Grab 'n Go at the Lakeshore Learning Commons (L1000) will run every Wednesday.

Please note the upcoming Wednesdays when food will be available:

  • Wednesday, January 8
  • Wednesday, January 15
  • Wednesday, January 22
  • Wednesday, January 29

How does the Food Bank work?

  1. Members of the Humber community who are experiencing food insecurity or hardship are encouraged to stop by the Lakeshore Learning Commons (L1000) between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
  2. There they will encounter a cart with a selection of non-perishable and perishable food items.
  3. Allergen-free foods are also available and stored in separate boxes.
  4. They can take what they need. It's that easy!

Can I help?

The Grab 'n Go Food Bank at the Learning Commons (L1000) is a FLAS partnership with the Library, the Faculty Union (Local 562), the Support Staff Union (Local 563) & Advising and Career Services.

If you would like to contribute, food donations are always welcome and appreciated. All donations can be dropped off at the Learning Commons (L1000) or the Lakeshore's MED building, 3rd floor.

Together, let's help fight food insecurity and ensure all members of our Humber community have access to food.

If you have questions, please contact Sarah Armenia at sarah.armenia@humber.ca.

These are the highlights of this month’s new and improved features in Blackboard Ultra that will be live Thursday, January 9. The most relevant updates are related to three key areas:

  • Instructional design
  • Mastery learning and learning pathways
  • and Gradebook

Learn more about the full update at Anthology's Blackboard website.

Instructional Design

Improvements to AI Design Assistant Outputs

Anthology has improved the following auto-generation features of the AI Design Assistant to have faster and more complex outputs. Anthology has also improved the quality of the images generated by the AI Design Assistant, making them look more realistic. Instructors can generate images faster and the image files require less storage space.

  • Assignments
  • Discussions
  • Journals
  • Test questions
  • Learning modules
  • AI Conversation avatars
  • Keywords for Unsplash

Improvements to the Content Designer for Documents

When instructors create or edit a document, the content block no longer closes when they collapse the menu in the editor. Also, the editor no longer closes when editing table settings. For file uploads in the Content Designer of Documents, the default file option when instructors upload files to documents is now View and Download. Also, instructors can now use the Undo and Redo functions for file uploads.

Mastery Learning and Learning Pathways

Add Submission Attempts for Release Conditions

Instructors can now use item submission status for a release condition. For example, an instructor who wants students to access a document only after submitting a quiz would use a release condition. Students can access content items without needing to wait for a grade to be posted!

The page for setting a release condition. The release condition is set to apply to all members and Performance is checked. Attempt submitted is highlighted in the dropdown menu for a gradable item.

Gradebook

Show/hide columns from instructors in the gradebook

Instructors can now configure column visibility for their gradebook view, ensuring a cleaner and more organized workspace when grading. Anthology has added a new Items Management page accessible from the Gradebook Settings panel. From this page, instructors can configure visibility for a single column selection or in bulk, without affecting visibility for students. This can help with grading using the gradebook!

Direct grade entry from the Grid view or Submissions page

Instructors can now enter grades directly in the Grid view or Submissions page with improved accuracy and consistency. Previously, grades entered in these views were stored at the override level, which caused confusion as underlying attempts remained ungraded and continued to display the Needs Grading and New Submission flags. This update ensures that grades entered this way are properly mapped to the underlying attempt or submission when applicable.
