This week, the FLAS Grab 'n Go Food Bank at the North Campus will be available on Wednesday, December 11 and Friday, December 13.

The North Campus Grab 'n Go Food Bank cart is located on the fifth floor of the LRC outside of the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

After December 13, the Grab 'n Go Food Bank at the North Campus will be closed for the Winter Break, but if someone you know is experiencing food insecurity, please direct them to this resource list, which contains links to resources on and off the Humber Campus.

How does the Food Bank work?

  1. Members of the Humber community who are experiencing food insecurity or hardship are encouraged to stop by the FLAS Office during business hours on the dates listed above.
  2. There they will encounter a cart with a selection of non-perishable food items.
  3. They can take what they need. It's that easy!

Can I help?

The FLAS Grab 'n Go Food Bank is a faculty-driven initiative intended to help fight food insecurity in our Humber community. If you would like to contribute, food donations are always welcome and appreciated. All donations can be dropped off at the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Together, let's help fight food insecurity and ensure all members of our Humber community have access to food.

The Centre for Innovation in Health & Wellness (CIHW), in collaboration with the Faculty of Social & Community Services (FSCS) and the Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology (FAST), is thrilled to announce the success of our recent project, ‘Role of Technology in Aging and Dementia Care'.

Canada's population is rapidly aging. As of July 1, 2024, approximately 7.8 million Canadians were aged 65 and older, accounting for almost one-fifth (19.7 per cent) of the total population (Older adults and population aging statistics). This trend is expected to continue, with seniors projected to represent up to 23.4 per cent of the total population by 2030 (The older people are all right - Statistics Canada).  It is estimated that 1,000,000 individuals will be diagnosed with dementia by 2030, an increase of 65 per cent compared to 2020 (Dementia numbers in Canada | Alzheimer Society of Canada). The need for comprehensive care and support for individuals living with dementia will become increasingly critical in the near future.

To address this complex challenge, CIHW designed an innovative cross faculty and interdisciplinary project to understand the impact of technology on aging and dementia care. The project involved a total of 88 students from Bachelor of Behavioural Sciences program (FSCS), Data Analytics program, and Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning program (FAST) working together in inter disciplinary groups. The teams were tasked with identifying gaps in existing community services and support for older adults living with dementia, through exploring both technological and community-based solutions to enhance their quality of life. The students presented their work and findings to peers, faculty members, and the CIHW team as part of their course assessment.

Many thanks to faculty members Dr. Roma Mehta (FSCS), Dr. Parisa Pouladzehda (FAST), and Program Coordinator Joanne Nugent (FSCS) for their support, and for integrating this innovative project into the program curriculum.

This project also highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, and the power of empowering students to be the change makers in their communities.  Together, we can create a healthier future for all!

Ladipo, PhD, Natasha K. Frank, MN, BScN, BSc, Meshanda Ellison BSCJ/PG CERT-ADR, Gurpreet Kaur M.Sc.,Akshay Khosla, M.Sc., Susan MacGregor, MDEM, MBA, Priscilla Enetomhe, MSc.

Abstract:

As a group of 10 applied researchers, faculty, and essential support staff at Humber Polytechnic, we share our enlightening experiences, working together in a collaborative setting to acquire knowledge on applied research practices. Our work is a testament to the power of collaboration, as we have used a collaborative and engaging autoethnographic model to disseminate our experiences of seven weeks. Although our reflections are independently composed pieces of work, they are observations of the collective work we completed during our participation in the Applied Research Program designed and hosted by Humber Polytechnic in Toronto, Canada.

Humber Polytechnic is the only post-secondary institution in Canada offering The Disability Impact on Career & Employment (D.I.C.E.) questionnaire, a self-assessment tool that focuses on career decision-making for learners with disabilities. While numerous career-focused tools exist, D.I.C.E. is the only one that assesses the impact of functional limitations related to disabilities, assesses how those limitations impact career choices, and makes recommendations for workplace accommodations to support success.

Academic & Career Services offers D.I.C.E. support for learners to bolster their employability pursuits. D.I.C.E. is free to full- and part-time students who want to demonstrate their potential to an employer through effective self-advocacy around disclosing and requesting accommodations.

After completing D.I.C.E. online, students are encouraged to follow up with our Student Success Advisor to review and rehearse how to use these results when advocating for accommodations.

If you would like to refer a student for D.I.C.E., please contact Elaine, Student Success Advisor, at elaine.belanger-porter@humber.ca.
