Workshop Topic: Rural remote internet access with ATSC 3.0 showcasing an ultra-long-range wireless backhaul solution from Avateq Corp.
Avateq Corp. is a Markham-based company innovating and manufacturing signal processing products that solve complex engineering tasks. They serve a broad range of industries including broadcast, telecom, automotive, medical and security sectors. Avateq Corp. has devised a next-generation ultra-long-range wireless backhaul solution for operators of point-to-point communication systems in Canada and around the world. Using the physical layer of the Advanced Television Systems Committee 3.0 broadcast standard (ATSC 3.0), and available sub-1GHz frequencies, Avateq's solution offers the most robust spectrum capacity available from remote and rural areas, increasing the achievable distance of backhaul hops for high throughput and low-latency broadband access. The solution is future-ready, facilitating integration with Internet Service Providers (ISP) with current and emerging fixed and cellular technologies, including 5G infrastructure.
Humber College’s Broadcast-Broadband Convergence B²C Lab
The first of its kind in North America
Humber College has developed Canada’s first Broadcast-Broadband Convergence B²C Lab to explore multisectoral data delivery applications enabled by the new Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0 television broadcast standard. The first of its kind in North America, the B²C Lab offers an ATSC 3.0 broadcast system and will include experimental 3.0 OTA broadcast testing, as well as a 5G core network to explore hybrid data delivery applications with mobile networks. With an accomplished team of faculty researchers and students, the B²C Lab is fostering partnerships with Canadian stakeholders leading to technology and business innovation at the local, regional and national levels.

In early December 2021, Humber officially launched a group for people who identify as white and/or as having white skin privilege to examine how they have been conditioned by their whiteness and how it shows up in their thoughts, feelings, and experiences, and within their institutions (home, work, educational, religious, etc.). The Unlearning Circle: Humber employees dismantling whiteness focuses on unpacking and dismantling white supremacy culture and unlearning it.
The Circle will hold its fourth session virtually on Tuesday, May 24 from 12 to 1:30 p.m.

Introduction to Creative Problem Solving
Join us for this introduction to solving challenges and opportunities. This is where we have some fun understanding why we work so well with some people and not so well with others. From this workshop, we will explore how the Basadur Simplexity Profile developed by Dr. Min Basadur sets the stage for optimizing how we solve challenges and opportunities both individually and collectively. This intro workshop is a pre-requisite for Simplexity Level 1 for Problem Solving.
Facilitator Bio: Debra Pickfield, MBA (Leadership), BA Social Sciences (Economics) is a dedicated “Minion” as she has facilitated Simplexity sessions for over ten years and watched groups navigate from frustration to “ahhh – we get it” as they explore what is the real issue seeking to be solved. Debra’s commitment to recognizing problem-solving as a key driver of innovation is what brings her to Humber College, and she is looking forward to sharing her passion and supporting anyone or any team as they learn a new skill to approach any opportunity or challenge facing them.
On Saturday, May 14, 2022, at Tops supermarket in Buffalo, New York ten people were murdered and three people were injured in a racially motivated, terrorist attack on Black shoppers. Eleven of the 13 victims were Black. This horrific intentional act of anti-Black racism reminds us of the violence and hatred perpetrated toward Black people on a daily basis.
The Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion will host a virtual support circle for Black employees on Wednesday, May 25, 2022 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. facilitated by Aina-Nia Ayo’Dele, Leadership Coach, Ancient Wisdom Teacher and Spiritual Liberation Activist.
All Humber and Guelph-Humber’s employees are invited to attend the support circle.

Looking to keep up with the continually growing demands of a competitive global marketplace, today’s manufacturers are looking for creative ways to solve complex production challenges. Many have turned to mobile robots, with or without a robotic arm integrated. These vehicles use a combination of intelligent software and sensors to navigate crowded factory floors and perform a wide range of complicated tasks in different industries.
How serious is this trend and how to get started with this technology?
This presentation on May 19 will provide an introduction to both mobile robots with and without a robotic arm. It will speak about the general trend of mobile robots, how to select a mobile robot that fits a specific application, and what basic considerations are necessary if looking to automate using them.
