Experience a ‘Learning Lab’ called Listening to Understand & Listening to Win

This is a new concept in training delivery for L&D, known for: No paper, no desk, no PowerPoint.

This We! course is all about communication and understanding and listening:

Listening to Understand is about "we" not "me". Here, the aim is to understand, really understand. Not with the desire to fix problems or make things better but to really comprehend and accept what the other person perceives. People who do this well set aside judgments and are really curious about how others see themselves in the world. This approach to listening benefits everyone involved. As a leader who excels at Listening to Understand your perspective of the world and people grows. As a result of attending this workshop leaders will understand:

  • The difference between listening to understand and listening to win – what they are and the difference in impact
  • How listening to understand allows leaders to deepen their perspectives
  • How to recreate themselves in the act of listening

Target Audience: Associate Deans, Associate Directors, Managers

Facilitator: Carol Fenn, Starfish Learning (SLI)

All are welcome at Faculty Sustainability Champions group on Tuesday, November 19 at 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in D109, North Campus.

All faculty are welcome to join anytime

This is an open group. You don’t have to know anything about sustainability, we hope to see you sometime this year!

At this session, we will spend time actively working on adding to our toolkits for teaching and incorporating sustainability knowledge and practices into the classroom. Have you heard of, or taught using the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) before? Have you made your course paperless? Have you taught a class outdoors before? Would you like to hear from others that have done those things? We want to hear your ideas and share experiences.

The Scholars’ Café is a chance to discuss the latest in the teaching and learning literature. It is like a book club, but for journal articles. Each month, faculty will gather to chat informally about a selected paper from a scholarly teaching and learning journal. Please join us for coffee and a collegial discussion. You are encouraged to bring your own lunch with you!

This month’s paper examined how fall breaks, recently introduced at many postsecondary institutions in Canada, including Humber, impact students’ stress levels. Come and reflect on and discuss with colleagues your experiences with our first fall reading week.
