Please join the Faculty Sustainability Champions group (a Community of Practice) on Tuesday, September 29  from 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on Microsoft Teams.

All Faculty are welcome to join anytime. This is an open group. You don’t have to know anything about sustainability, you can be an expert, or somewhere in between. If you are only able to join for part of the meeting, please do!

This group works collaboratively to build our toolkits for teaching and incorporating sustainability knowledge and practices into the classroom. Have you heard of, or taught using the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) before? Have you made connections between social justice issues and the climate crisis in relation to your course? Have you taught a class outdoors? Would you like to learn ways that you can emphasize the interconnectedness of sustainability into your program from other faculty members who have done so?

During the first gathering of the group this academic year, we will briefly review the purpose of the group, highlight resources available to all and then dive into some brainstorming and planning actions for the year. A summary of a new sustainability specialization will also be included.

To register, please click here.

We hope to see you on the 29th!

Responding to ‘Hot Moments’ in the Online Classroom
October 6, 20 and November 3: 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.

A ‘hot moment’ in the classroom is an emotion-laden moment of conflict or tension that threatens to derail teaching and learning. ‘Hot moments’ are usually triggered by a comment on a sensitive issue such as a racist comment. Many faculty are uncertain how to effectively respond. This 3-part mini-series presents strategies and the opportunity to rehearse one’s response in order to feel confident in a real-life hot moment.

As the inaugural kickoff event that will mark the beginning of our Indigenous Movie Cafe, Indigenous Education and Engagement is presenting a virtual screening and panel discussion of the film Indian Horse. An adaptation of Ojibway writer Richard Wagamese’s award-winning novel, this moving and important film sheds light on the dark history of Indian Residential Schools in Canada. (movie trailer 1) (movie trailer 2)

For Indigenous peoples in Canada and across the world, this story may be deeply familiar and personal. Both the book and the film provide an opportunity for educators to engage with a resource that fosters empathy, healing and understanding of Indigenous experiences and histories in Canada. Honour the survivors and the children who never returned home from Indian Residential Schools this September 30 on Orange Shirt Day by wearing an orange shirt and using the hashtag Every Child Matters.

Synopsis of the Story:

In late 1950s Ontario, eight-year-old Saul Indian Horse is torn from his Ojibway family and committed to one of Canada’s notorious Catholic Residential Schools. Denied the freedom to speak his language or embrace his Indigenous heritage, Saul witnesses all kinds of abuse at the hands of the very people who were entrusted with his care. Despite this, Saul finds comfort and fascination in the unlikeliest of places and favourite Canadian pastimes — hockey. His talent leads him away from the misery of the school to a Northern Ontario native league and eventually the Pros. But the ghosts of Saul’s past will always haunt him.

Film Screening Date: The film is available online to watch on you own, please register in the link below to receive the link.

Panel Date: Post-Film Panel Discussion - Monday, September 28, 2018, 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The film screening and panel is open to all faculty, students and staff. Please note, entire courses are welcome! This is an excellent opportunity to engage Indigenous stories from Indigenous perspectives.

To RSVP for yourself, members of your faculty/department or a course please register here.

If you or anyone you know is affected by this film, please connect with the services that are available to support yourself or them in the attached poster.

Please feel free to post the poster in your school or department, and disseminate far and wide!

Participants: Faculty, Administrative, Support

This fast-paced webinar with a Q&A session will introduce participants to the diverse identities and experiences captured by the LGBTQI2S acronym, including their relationship to four components of human identity related to gender and sexual diversity. Participants will learn how and why an individual’s identity directly impacts their experience of the world, and how social norms can lead to discriminatory systems and practices. These ideas will then be used to ground a discussion on the importance of respectful and inclusive language as a component of fostering safer and more inclusive spaces. Participants will leave the webinar with both inspirations and tips for becoming more affirming and supportive in their interactions with LGBTQI2S students, co-workers and the community at large.

Workshop Objectives:

  • Explain the LGBTQI2S acronym and the diverse identities and experiences it represents;
  • Differentiate assigned sex, gender identity, gender expression, and attraction and how these aspects of personal identity interact within every person;
  • Understand the concepts of social location and intersectionality;
  • Recognize examples of discriminatory practices that harm LGBTQI2S persons and how they link to intersecting systems of oppression;
  • Understand a number of ways to affirm someone’s gender (including affirming personal pronouns) and value these practices as demonstrations of respect, and inclusion of trans and gender non-conforming people; and
  • Understand updates to legislation and legal protections for gender identity and expression, in a Canadian context at Federal and Provincial/Territorial levels of government

Facilitatator: Egale Canada Human Rights Trust

Kate S. Moore (she/her), M.A., B.Ed, B.E.S. is Egale’s bilingual (French and English) diversity, inclusion, anti-bias, anti-racism, anti-discrimination, leadership and transformation external trainer and consultant.
