Poppy Beading Workshop at North and Lakeshore Campus - Contact Lorralene.Whiteye@humber.ca to register!

In preparation for Remembrance Day on Monday, November 11 and Indigenous Veterans Day on Friday, November 8, we are hosting a Poppy Beading Workshop at each campus.

This workshop is available for students, staff and alumni with a limit of 20 individuals per session, with the main instruction happening on the October 29 and November 5. If you do not finish your poppy or would like additional instruction drop in hours are also available on October 30 and November 6.

Please RSVP by emailing indigenous@humber.ca or lorralene.whiteye@humber.ca.

Why are we hosting this?

National Aboriginal Veterans Day began in Winnipeg in 1994 when Indigenous veterans were not recognized in Remembrance Day activities, and is now celebrated in many communities across Canada. More than 12,000 Indigenous people are estimated to have volunteered in all three wars, including 7,000 First Nations members, and approximately 300 died during these conflicts.

Humber Music hosts a free noon-hour concert series. This week will showcase Hilario Duran Contumbao.

Multiple JUNO Award-winner Hilario Durán grew up in Havana in a musical family surrounded by a variety of diverse musical influences on a daily basis. He began working as a professional musician in Cuba’s Los Papa Cun-Cun Ensemble and in a variety of musical formats. Later on, in the 1970s, Durán was Chucho Valdés’ chosen successor in Cuba’s most modern big band, Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna. Hilario toured worldwide and performed with Dizzy Gillespie and Michel Legrand, among many others, and as part of Arturo Sandoval’s band where he was pianist/keyboardist, arranger and musical director for nine years.

Hilario is an adjunct piano professor and ensemble director at Humber College. Contumbao is his most recent recording as a band leader.
