Challenging Anti-Black Racism in the Virtual Environment: A Webinar for Humber Faculty

Tuesday, June 16 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Session description:

Anti-Black racism is prejudice, attitudes, beliefs, stereotyping and/or discrimination that is directed at people of African descent and is rooted in their unique history and experience of enslavement and colonization (Confronting Anti-Black Racism Unity, City of Toronto). Anti-Black racism is not new; it has persisted for hundreds of years. However, recent media coverage of the impacts of anti-black racism has brought greater awareness to the issue, and the need to act.

This two-hour workshop will focus on how faculty can act, by working in allyship with the Black community in confronting anti-Black racism. Specifically, participants of this workshop will examine anti-Black racism in the virtual environment and explore the impacts of power in higher education and discuss strategies for challenging anti-Black racism.

We are hosting our second virtual Indigenous movie cafe! Every month we watch a film and host a post-film discussion over Zoom.

The post-film discussion will be held on June 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. All registered participants will be entered in a draw for a $50 gift card.

This month we are featuring nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up, a documentary following the family of the late Colten Boushie, a young Cree man fatally shot on August 9, 2016 after entering Gerald Stanley’s rural property. The jury’s subsequent acquittal of Stanley captured international attention, raising questions about racism embedded within Canada’s legal system. Directed by Tasha Hubbard, nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up addresses the stark history of colonialism on the prairies and a vision of a future where Indigenous children can live safely on their homelands.

Content warning: This film is PG but it discusses the details around the death of Colten Boushie, racism/racial slurs, and hateful language during the film.
