Human Rights Education and Training Team

The Ontario Human Rights Commission requires that all employers provide ongoing education and training on the organization’s
human rights policy. All Humber employees (full-time, non-full-time, work-study) are required to update their knowledge of Humber’s Human Rights Policy and Complaint Resolution Procedures every two years.

Goal of the workshop:

Increase and reinforce Humber and University of Guelph-Humber employees’ understanding of Humber’s Human Rights Policy and Humber’s Human Rights Complaint Resolution Procedures, and their implications for enhancing equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in order to advance employees’ feelings of belonging.

Please note the following:

  • All Humber employees who have attended a Humber Human Rights Training session prior to December 2021 are required to refresh their knowledge of Humber’s Human Rights Policy and Complaint Resolution Procedures by undergoing an updated training. It is important to note that the policy is being revised and you will also have an opportunity to provide input at the educational sessions.
  • Registration space is limited. Please do not sign up for more than one session in order to leave space for other registrants.
  • To facilitate your attendance, Human Rights Training sessions will be offered through an Eventbrite online registration process available at the registration link below each session.
  • Please note whether the session is marked as an "Open Session" which means it is open to all Humber Employees or a "Closed Session" and is therefore only open to a select group of employees.

The Student Wellness and Accessibility Centre (SWAC) is hosting a Mental Health Day Event on Tuesday, October 11 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the lower E-concourse area (EC2-1).

Mental Health Day is on October 10 which is a holiday, so SWAC is holding the event on the 11 to raise awareness to the importance of prioritizing mental health and well-being. The purpose of this event is to disseminate information to students about ways to access counselling, health, and accessibility learning services at Humber. This is a great opportunity to learn about healthy coping strategies that students can use to manage stressors and challenging times. This is a also great way to connect with others and engage in enjoyable activities.

If you have questions or inquiries about the event, please email priyanka.sahajpal@humber.ca.

We hope to see you there!

Poster for Wild About the City

The Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre welcomes you to our new Third Floor Gallery exhibition Wild About the City featuring local artist Lisa Compton! Explore a mix of scratchboard, oils, pastels, and acrylics representing the diverse flora and fauna of the Toronto area. The exhibition highlights the relationship between wildlife and urban spaces, presenting unique voices of subjects speaking from their urbanized landscapes.

Experience another perspective on animals commonly thought to be dangerous or pestilential and develop a new understanding of the influence of urban expansion on local wildlife. Reflect on past assumptions, develop an appreciation for our natural neighbours, and learn how to safely cohabitate in our shared spaces.

The exhibition will run October 11, 2022 to January 20, 2023. Third floor gallery is open Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Wednesdays from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Innovative Learning is hosting a Teaching 101 Series for faculty.

To begin the new academic year on a good note, join the IL team for a series of sessions focused on classroom teaching. These sessions will focus on teaching strategies, tips, tools and templates.

Workshop descriptions:

Creating an Effective Lesson Plan
Date/Time: September 22 from 4 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Lesson planning helps ensure that curriculum is engaging, consistent, and effectively assessed. A well-designed lesson is rewarding for educators and motivating for students. In this workshop, participants will explore the elements of an effective lesson plan and receive a template to guide the design of lessons that maximize learning opportunities for all students.

During the session, faculty will:
1. Justify the importance of lesson planning to create an effective and inclusive learning experience.
2. Describe the purpose of the components of an effective and inclusive lesson plan.
3. Use a lesson plan template to start creating a lesson plan.

Writing Measurable Learning Outcomes
Date/Time: September 29 from 4 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Learning outcomes are a critical component of the teaching and learning process. They act as a guide for learners and educators and indicate what the learners will know and do by the end of a specified course or program. In this workshop, participants will learn how to write observable and measurable student learning outcomes that inform course content and assessments.

During this workshop faculty will:

  1. Explain the purpose of writing measurable learning outcomes for their lessons and courses
  2. Identify the three essential ingredients of measurable learning outcomes
  3. Analyze learning outcomes for clarity and purpose
  4. Write a measurable learning outcome for one of their courses

Creating Meaningful Assessments and Incorporating Feedback
Date/Time: October 6 from 4 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Classroom assessment techniques allow educators to gauge ongoing student learning to help determine the next steps within a course or lesson. They are easy to implement and invaluable tools for the learning process.  In this workshop, participants will discover how the use of classroom assessment techniques can improve the learning process, increase student engagement, and encourage students to produce quality work.

During this workshop faculty will:

  1. Differentiate between the different kinds of assessment.
  2. Identify classroom assessment techniques that can improve the learning process.
  3. Identify how to implement a feedback strategy into the learning process
