I’ve always been passionate about leveraging technology to drive business innovation, which led me to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce in Digital Business Management at Humber in 2021. This program allowed me to explore digital strategies and entrepreneurial concepts, while also building essential business skills to succeed in today’s fast-paced marketplace.

During my studies, I received the bachelor’s entrance scholarship in my first year and secured a co-op position as a Technology Audit Intern at TD Bank in my final year. There, I assessed IT controls and processes to ensure compliance with regulatory standards. This experience deepened my technical expertise and gave me valuable insights into the intersection of technology and finance.

The Math and Writing Centre was a great resource for me, especially as my program had a strong focus on calculations. The tutors helped me understand complex mathematical concepts and offered strategies for problem-solving. Additionally, Professor Yvonne Yip-Berkenblit’s engaging teaching style and constant support outside of class were invaluable throughout my journey.

In my free time, I enjoy baking, playing basketball or badminton, and reading. These activities help me stay creative, active, and continuously learning.

I arrived in Canada in August 2023 to pursue Diploma in Advertising and Marketing Communications at Humber. What inspired me to pursue this field is my passion for effective communication. I want to become a Marketing Communication Specialist, and I am driven by the desire to help businesses communicate their value effectively, ensuring their message resonates with their audience. I believe that mastering the art of communication is essential in today’s dynamic marketing landscape, and this program is helping me do just that.

I’ve been gaining hands-on experience by working part-time as a Business Development Representative. In this role, I am responsible for initiating communication with customers through inbound and outbound calls, email marketing, and social media outreach. I focus on understanding customer needs, educating them on how our products or services can benefit them, and collaborating with sales executives to close deals. My responsibilities also include maintaining accurate records, which has sharpened my organizational skills.

Humber has been instrumental in supporting my journey. I’ve found resources like IGNITE activities, the Math and Writing Center, and the international center extremely helpful. These resources have not only enhanced my academic experience but have also equipped me with skills that are valuable in my professional journey. One course that has surprised me is Innovative Design. I didn’t expect to enjoy it so much, but it has opened my eyes to the creative side of marketing.

Exploring the vibrant city of Toronto and hanging out with friends in my free time has been a great way to balance my personal and academic life.

I’ve always had a passion for helping people in improving their health and it ignited my interest in pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce in Healthcare Management at Humber College. It would allow me to help people by working on the administrative side of the industry.

In 2021, I moved to Canada and the cold was a major challenge coming from a tropical country. Making friends was another challenge. Everything being online made it tough to build connections, leaving me feeling somewhat isolated. However, I found ways to adapt. For the weather, I mastered the art of layering clothes, which made the cold more bearable. As for making friends, I found solace in the online communities we created. These groups started out to connect and play games online but eventually, they led to in-person gatherings later.

I have worked with Solutions with Impact before and when I mentioned that I wanted to intern with them, they were happy to welcome me aboard. So, I can say it was more of networking. In my free time, I enjoy baking, writing poetry, and spending time with friends. These activities help me unwind and stay connected with the people I care about. My goal is to become a Healthcare Project Leader at Colliers.

As a transfer student, ONTransfer was an invaluable resource in helping me transfer credits and excel in my courses. The international student department played a crucial role, guiding me to the various services available on campus that helped me adjust and thrive in this new environment.

After earning my Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication and Journalism, I started a craft business in Kenya and realized the need for business management training. Humber stood out as the ideal place to gain the skills needed to manage creative projects and run arts organizations. In 2018, I moved to Canada to pursue the Ontario Graduate Certificate in Arts Administration and Cultural Management at Humber.

With prior experience in arts programming, this program provided a smooth transition into the Canadian arts industry. It covered key areas like project planning, marketing, financial management, human resources, and advocacy, equipping me with the tools to succeed. I was also honored to receive a $500 Entrance Scholarship and a $500 Dean’s Award Scholarship.

I am currently the Arts Programs Officer at Assembly Hall, managing a gallery with free exhibitions and producing various art programs. I also run a part-time arts consultancy supporting newcomer and Black artists. Additionally, I founded Sekoya East Africa, a non-profit offering professional development and workshops for artists in Kenya.

The program I completed provided practical skills in project management, marketing, and financial planning, alongside soft skills like networking. I also had a co-op placement at Nai Children’s Choir, working with Syrian newcomers at CultureLink Settlement Services.

I aspire to build an arts consultancy focused on project management and arts advocacy. My long-term goal is to establish an arts management course in Kenya and create exchange programs between Kenyan and Canadian artists.
