Student Testimonials

Brendan with short dark hair is wearing a dark gray zip-up sweater with the word "IGNITE" and a logo printed on the left side.

I am in the third year of my Bachelor of Digital Communications. Due to the pandemic, I had to do the first three semesters online and could only move to Canada in January 2022. Digital communications degree back home is not as technologically advanced as at Humber.

I am a brand ambassador at IGNITE, the student union at Humber College and I got it through a job fair last year. This experience has taught me time management, socialization on a different level, and learning to adapt to better understand and relate to people. It requires me to think on my toes and be prepared to address the queries of the students and games to engage with them. I love helping students make the best out of their campus life.

During the first two years of my program, I learned how to apply theory to practice, and I was able to produce a documentary called self-taught. It's about an artist who, because of the pandemic, had to close her gym and become a self-taught artist in Toronto. Photography is my passion and I want to include it in my profession. I like that the program offers Co-op, and it gives me one year of experience that most companies are looking for.

During my free time, I love to hang out with my roommates, watch movies and explore Toronto. I would suggest living at Humber's residence for your first year and knowing your rights as a student. Reach out to the international center and ask for everything you would need to know before coming to Canada.

I’ve always been passionate about leveraging technology to drive business innovation, which led me to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce in Digital Business Management at Humber in 2021. This program allowed me to explore digital strategies and entrepreneurial concepts, while also building essential business skills to succeed in today’s fast-paced marketplace.

During my studies, I received the bachelor’s entrance scholarship in my first year and secured a co-op position as a Technology Audit Intern at TD Bank in my final year. There, I assessed IT controls and processes to ensure compliance with regulatory standards. This experience deepened my technical expertise and gave me valuable insights into the intersection of technology and finance.

The Math and Writing Centre was a great resource for me, especially as my program had a strong focus on calculations. The tutors helped me understand complex mathematical concepts and offered strategies for problem-solving. Additionally, Professor Yvonne Yip-Berkenblit’s engaging teaching style and constant support outside of class were invaluable throughout my journey.

In my free time, I enjoy baking, playing basketball or badminton, and reading. These activities help me stay creative, active, and continuously learning.

A man is standing in front of a backdrop that reads "Home of the Humber Hawks" with the Humber College logo and eagle mascot. He is holding an "Honours Award" certificate, which recognizes his achievements. He is dressed in a brown and navy striped shirt, smiling slightly, and appears proud of his accomplishment. The setting indicates a formal recognition event.

I am passionate about sports, and baseball has been an important part of my life. I have been playing since the age of 12 years and now, I am also a coach. I completed undergraduate studies in physical education and worked for a few years in Colombia. My passion inspired me to build a career in sports and I moved to Canada in August 2022 to pursue sport management advanced diploma at Humber College. I want to build a strong career in sports and become the best baseball coach.

Humber offers great opportunities and environment for recreational and sport purposes. I am a baseball athlete playing for Humber Polytechnic and working with the athletics department. In this role, I am taking care of the members in the weight training room, cardio room and at the front desk. I ensure our members follow our policies and procedures and appropriately use the facilities at the Humber fitness centre.

In my free time, I enjoy music and dancing. It's part of my culture. I am living the dream and enjoying the city with my wife. We had high expectations from Canada, and those expectations are fulfilled. I faced a few challenges as a newcomer to find housing and use public transportation in Toronto. Eventually, I found my way through the Canadian way of doing things and got a part-time job at Humber Athletics centre.

After earning my Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication and Journalism, I started a craft business in Kenya and realized the need for business management training. Humber stood out as the ideal place to gain the skills needed to manage creative projects and run arts organizations. In 2018, I moved to Canada to pursue the Ontario Graduate Certificate in Arts Administration and Cultural Management at Humber.

With prior experience in arts programming, this program provided a smooth transition into the Canadian arts industry. It covered key areas like project planning, marketing, financial management, human resources, and advocacy, equipping me with the tools to succeed. I was also honored to receive a $500 Entrance Scholarship and a $500 Dean’s Award Scholarship.

I am currently the Arts Programs Officer at Assembly Hall, managing a gallery with free exhibitions and producing various art programs. I also run a part-time arts consultancy supporting newcomer and Black artists. Additionally, I founded Sekoya East Africa, a non-profit offering professional development and workshops for artists in Kenya.

The program I completed provided practical skills in project management, marketing, and financial planning, alongside soft skills like networking. I also had a co-op placement at Nai Children’s Choir, working with Syrian newcomers at CultureLink Settlement Services.

I aspire to build an arts consultancy focused on project management and arts advocacy. My long-term goal is to establish an arts management course in Kenya and create exchange programs between Kenyan and Canadian artists.
