How HLOs Help You Get Ready

Humber Learning Outcomes (HLOs) demonstrate our commitment to developing career-ready citizens. No matter which program you choose, you will graduate with the employability skills, mindsets, and values that will benefit you throughout your career and your life. Embedded within each curriculum, you will have many opportunities to gain experience in these attributes as a value-add to program-specific knowledge and skills.

As you prepare to graduate, the HLOs will help you stand apart in the job application process by, for example, helping you design a professional portfolio or prepare for a job interview. The HLOs will help equip you with the language to describe your value as an individual with deep technical knowledge a the broad skills and competencies that position you to lead and innovate in your chosen field.

Working While Studying

Part-time employment opportunities are available to international students for working both on and off campus. You can work up to 24 hours per week on campus, or up to 20 hours per week off campus, during regular school sessions and work full time during scheduled breaks.

Working on campus will help you gain valuable work experience, learn about services at Humber and earn extra money. Most positions are relatively flexible to your study schedule. Working off campus is a great opportunity to gain first-hand experience with a Canadian company and work environment. You must have a valid study permit that states you are eligible to work off campus.

Student Testimonials

Video games have always been a part of my life, but I never thought of making a career out of it. Until one day I was playing a Ubisoft game and it inspired me to follow a path in the video game industry...

...Thanks to Humber’s networking opportunities, I landed my first job while I was still in my first semester. For the past three years, I have worked with two different companies as a game developer and a junior developer. Since 2019, I am working part-time as a programmer for UP360, a start-up based in Toronto.

During the same time, I initiated an ongoing project that involved the Faculty of Media, Creative Arts, and Design and the Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation. The goal was to build a financially affordable breath controller that would help people who have Motor Neuron Disease so they can interact more easily with video games. I also represented Humber at hackathons across North America. These hackathons helped me gain new skills and provided me with the opportunity to work with real-world issues.

The best thing about this program is the teaching faculty and how they help you to connect with the industry. We had CEOs and managers come to our classes and speak to us. This exposure increased my confidence, and networking helped me land full-time job offers.

My professors also helped me through assignments to develop interpersonal skills, like public speaking.

The most significant moment for me was getting my co-op placement in an independent adjusting company. This opportunity came as a result of Humber partnership and connections with the industry.
