Ray Chateau is a leader in every sense of the word. His commitment to his staff and over 300 student-athletes that represent Humber College is second to none. After a year that presented Humber Athletics – and the rest of the country – with challenges never seen before, Ray was the pillar that helped the Hawks maintain their unparalleled athletic and academic success. He was pivotal in helping the Hawks continue to train and learn, despite the uncertainty of a 2021-22 varsity season. Humber's High Performance Centre transitioned into online training, and another Varsity Academic Coordinator was added to help these student-athletes transition to online learning. These moves returned impressive dividends as the Hawks received 15 CCAA Academic All-Canadian recipients - the most in country - which is the CCAA’s most prestigious student-athlete honour, epitomizing both the organization's commitment to academic success and athletic achievement.
When the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) was adamant on canceling the 2022 winter semester, Ray spent countless hours advocating for the student-athletes, not just Humber's but every student-athlete in the conference. Knowing the hard work, dedication, and sacrifices these student-athletes make on a daily basis to be able to represent their school in the sport they love plays a crucial role towards their overall mental health.
Ray was again at the forefront of another major change within the CCAA in December 2021. He brought forward Humber's grave concerns around the outdated language in the CCAA operating code around transgender student athletes and participation in varsity sport. The OCAA membership supported the motions brought forward by Humber and a special meeting of the CCAA was convened in January 2022 to amend Article 5, Section 16. In a landmark decision, the CCAA, revised the language to allow student-athletes to compete on the sport team that corresponds with either their sex assigned at birth or their gender identity.
